We have completed the mission

High Salute and the others were there in the early afternoon and she should be home soon and able to post.

I left the Statehouse about 4:00 and arrived in Belfast at 5:15, found them at the cafe. One hardy soul (a vet) rode his HD down from Bangor, sporting a US Flag.

We headed back to the funeral home for 6:00 and got into position.

The first person we met upon arrival there was General Libby, we greeted each other and spoke briefly, he thanked us for being there and then went up to be with the family and attend the service.

The cameras and reporters had lots of questions for us, as they were not allowed near the memorial service. I did one oncamera interview, and deferred to our veteran when asked the next time. He was nervous, but I told him to speak straight from the heart. He did a great for the Humble Family and the PGR.

I just saw his interview on the TV at 11:00.

I saw something extremely unexpected, High Salute developed an allergic reaction to the camera...she usually is not the least bit shy.

The military honor guard formed outside the building and we took up a different position.

We stood motionless and silent with our flags for about an hour in the night air during the service, and then witnessed the 21 gun salute.

We reformed again alongside the drive, as the friends and family departed.

I then went up the funeral home and went inside to meet the family and present the PGR Plaque. I was last in line, and spoke to the grieving parents, the father thanked us repeatedly and the mother took both of my hands as I spoke to her...the hardest part for me of the mission.

Big thanks to all the members who came to support the family and the troops. It takes a special breed to do a Maine PGR Wintertime mission.

Special thanks to Highsalute, who did an exemplary job in handling the details including ordering the PGR Plaque. Many thanks to the PGR.

Mike

My first mission. Hopefully, but not realisitically, my last.

Some really great people here. It was cold, no arguement there. I kept telling myself this was a cakewalk compared to what our service men and women are going through, but my feet never seemed to get that message.

Having Josh's Dad and all those members of the military come out and thank us just blew me away. It was they who deserved our thanks.

My thanks to the PGR for that opportunity to say "Thanks". Count on me.

Thank you all for doing this. I just learned about your organization and was very eager to join after hearing about it! Being a veteran and now Coast Guard wife and Army Mom (son is a Cav Scout overseas), I totally appreciate this organization's endeavors. Like others have said, we hope to not get the call, but if we do, we will be there for our fallen heroes.

Patriot Guard Mentioned here (I guess they didn't like the 12,000 number for members!)  in the Bangor Daily News: date March 8, 2006

Service held for Maine soldier
Wednesday, March 08, 2006 - Bangor Daily News << Back

BELFAST - Spc. Joshua Humble, the soldier who was killed a week ago in Iraq by a roadside bomb, was remembered as a true patriot who loved his family, his God, his country and his mission.

As a waxing moon rose in the Tuesday evening sky, family and friends of the Appleton man, along with scores of men and women in uniform, gathered at a local funeral home to pay their respects to the fallen soldier who served with the Army's 10th Mountain Division out of Fort Drum, N.Y.

With state and national flags at half-staff, an Army honor guard from the 10th Mountain Division fired a 15-gun salute in his honor.

Clad in dress green uniforms, red berets and wearing white gloves, the honor guard stacked their rifles into a pyramid, then formed around Humble's flag-draped casket. They folded the red, white and blue flag into a triangle and handed the colors to his mother.

In his eulogy, Army chaplain Lt. Earl Weigelt described Humble as a loving son who cared deeply for his family and his mission in the Army. He said the young soldier was proud of his service and believed strongly in the goal he worked for in Iraq. He was proud that Iraqi children would live in freedom. He was devoted to his parents, brother and sisters, Weigelt said.

Humble, 21, enlisted in the Army in 2004 and began serving in Iraq last summer. He was killed Sunday, Feb. 26, in Baghdad. Spc. Clay Farr, 21, of Bakersfield, Calif., his close friend and barracks mate, also died in the explosion. Humble was to attend Farr's wedding later this year. Lt. Weigelt assured the gathering that the two soldiers were together in a better place.

Staff Sgt. Robert Preusser of Belton, Texas, served with Humble in Iraq and learned of his death four hours before boarding a bus to the airport for a two-week leave at home.

Within days of arriving at Fort Drum, Sgt. Preusser packed his bags and drove to Belfast to attend his friend's funeral. Preusser will return to Iraq next week.

"He was a funny, funny guy, wise beyond his years. Just an outstanding person," Preusser said. "He was the first one to slap you on the back when you were feeling down or upset, the first to come up with a joke that would really crack you up. He was great with the Iraqi people. There is a lot of good going on over there, despite this tragedy."

A high school friend of Humble's who gave his name only as Mike described him as a "really nice guy. I thank him every day because he died fighting for his country. You have to honor a man for that. He'll be missed, that's for sure."

Humble attended grammar school in Warren and Camden Hills High School from 1999 to 2000. He enlisted in the Army in 2004 and was deployed to Iraq in August. He served as a scout with the 1st Squadron of the 71st Cavalry Regiment.

Throughout the funeral service, four members of the Maine Chapter of Patriot Guard Riders, a nationwide group of more than 5,000 motorcycle riders, stationed themselves along the street in front of the Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home. They carried American flags and said they were there to support a fallen hero.

"We honor him as a fallen American hero," said Asha Lamy of Naples. "We are here to honor this young man, support his family and let them know we care."

Durby St. George of Bangor, who arrived by motorcycle, said he felt compelled to attend the funeral because "this man lost his life for our country. He deserves recognition for being willing to make that sacrifice."

William Sullivan, commander of the Randall-Collins VFW Post 2358 of Belfast, and a group of his officers also attended the service.

"We wanted to come here to show our respects to a fallen soldier, give our condolences to the family and do what we can to support them," said Sullivan. "It is a real sad thing to have happen, especially this close to home. We honor him."

For his service to his country Humble was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Army High Achievement medal, Good Conduct medal and many other medals and ribbons for his overseas service.

Humble was born in Lapset, Mich., Dec. 30, 1984, son of Richard and Vivian Shannon. He loved to hunt, enjoyed the outdoors and loved Chinese food, the family said. He also loved spending time with his family when he could, especially when he came home on leave. He always was willing to help anyone in need in a calming and generous way.

He was devoted to his family, country and duty as a soldier, and anyone who met or knew him could see he had a warm heart, the family said.

He is survived by his parents, Richard and Vivian Shannon of Appleton; a brother, Ben Truong of Appleton, two sisters, Naomi Goodwin and her husband, Colin, of Swanville and Virginia Shannon of Farmington. Interment will be at Pine Grove Cemetery in Appleton.

This is the third attempt in trying to write this mission report. I am failing miserably.  My emotions and thoughts have been all jumbled together and each time I try to put them on paper...it appears that I am a babbling idiot. No one, not even me...could possibly discern my thought process or experience on this mission.

To SPC. Humble's parents:  If only I could carry your heavy burden for just a minute: it would  give you time to catch your breath.  If only I could relieve your deep sorrow for an hour, then maybe you could sit for a time and relax.  If only I could step in and take on your greatest pain and loss, then maybe you could sleep peacefully this night.  Although this and so much more is my hearts desire, none of it can I do. If only......       I f   o n l y... So I dig deep within to find the perfect words, in hope that somewhere in the midst of all this darkness, it will help you, once again find some light. When the morning dawn brings the sun to warm you as if God was holding you in his hands. As His strength and His comfort begins to heal and as you find hope once more....please know that we stand with you during this time of adversity.  We stand in awe and honor of your son.  It is we, American Citizens, that owe you a debt of gratitude for raising such a fine young man.  And I personally thank the two of you for allowing us, the Patriot Guard Riders to be a part of your lives and his, if only for a moment.  Your faces are etched in my mind, my heart.  The two of you, and our American Hero will not be forgotten.  If ever there is something I can do for you, no matter how small, I hope you know by now, that you can call on me at any time. It would be the least I could do.

To all PGR's, VNC MC's, Rolling Thunder, and individual citizens:  Thank you for honoring SPC Joshua U. Humble and supporting his parents yesterday, whether in person or in heart.

Sorry PGR's...I can't write a detailed mission report at this time. Everytime I try, I can't help by cry for this family, the things I saw and experienced yesterday.

If anyone can help durby download his pics and upload them here...please contact him.

Again thank you all. May God's grace shine upon your face continuously.
