Family, Friends Remember Slain Soldiers
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 5:39 a.m. ET

MADRAS, Ore. (AP) -- At a gas station where Pfc. Thomas L. Tucker pumped gas as a teenager, car wash manager Ed Bockoven affixed red-white-and-blue balloons to the store's sign to remember Tucker and another soldier taken captive and killed in Iraq.

''He has a lot of friends in town,'' Bockoven said.

The bodies of Tucker, 25, of Madras and Pfc. Kristian Menchaca, 23, of Houston were found late Monday near Youssifiyah, where the soldiers disappeared Friday during an attack on a checkpoint. A third soldier, Spc. David J. Babineau, 25, of Springfield, Mass., died in the attack.

An Iraqi defense ministry official said the bodies of Menchaca and Tucker showed signs of being tortured and that the men were killed in a ''barbaric way.'' Al-Qaida in Iraq suggested in an unauthenticated Web statement the men were beheaded.

Tucker's family grieved in private, saying in a statement they were devastated by the news, but were heartened by the community support.

''Tom has gained a much larger family through this ordeal than he had when he left home to go help to free the Iraqi people and protect his country from the threat of terrorism,'' the family said.

On Monday, Tucker's family released the text of a phone message that Tucker recently left on an answering machine, telling his mother to be proud of him.

''I'm just gonna go on on a little vacation but I'll be back before you know it,'' the message says.

Menchaca grew up in a close-knit extended Mexican-American family in Houston. His uncle and cousins remembered a sweet, quiet young man who was proud to be in the military and later wanted to join the U.S. Border Patrol.

''He talked about how happy he was that he was serving his country,'' said Sylvia Grice, 37, Menchaca's cousin.

Relatives said he married his wife, 18-year-old Christina Menchaca, of Big Spring, a few weeks before being deployed to Iraq. Christina Menchaca has declined to speak to reporters.

''Everyone he met liked him. He had that kind of personality,'' Grice said. ''He liked to help people. He was just the kind of person you enjoyed being with.''

Mario Vasquez said his nephew had been interested in the military since he was a young boy.

Menchaca's family last saw him in May, when he was on leave. Menchaca enrolled in the Army in middle to late 2005, his uncle said.

''I remember seeing him and giving him a lot of money and telling him go enjoy himself,'' Grice said. ''He didn't want to take it. But I still stuck it in his pocket and told him to go out and have fun.''

Mario Vasquez said Menchaca and his cousins were very close and he spent much of his childhood visiting and staying in their home. Menchaca's mother eventually moved from another part of town with her two sons to a duplex a few blocks away. She had recently moved to Brownsville.

Tucker graduated from high school in 1999 and worked a variety of construction jobs before he decided to join the Army last summer. He seemed to have found something of what he was looking for, said Tim McDonald, who co-owns McDonald Development of Redmond, where Tucker worked as a framer.

''He said he liked it, and it was working out for him,'' McDonald said.

Josh Tolman, who went to high school with Tucker, said he and his friend would angle for catfish in the Prineville Reservoir and in fall head into the Ochoco Mountains to hunt deer and elk with their families.

''We helped each other work on (our trucks), then go play with them in the woods,'' Tolman said.

When one bleeds, we all bleed, When one is taken from us, we all feel the empty void.
In the deepest part of every true patriots heart, is a pure positive energy that so truly desires to let your family know that your loss is also our loss. I know this is not always something that can be explained by a few simple written words no matter how hard I try to use my words to embrace you in this time of your family heart ache.
With Our Deepest Regret, And Our Highest Respectable Humble Regard, We openly shed more than just tears with you. Our heart aches knowing your feeling an aching void. Our heart ache is truly in honor felt for your loved one. It will be an honor and privilege for the Trophy Club Texas Bikers to stand tall, proud, respectful, silent and mourn in silence and continue to show our support to a heart broken family, state and nation.

The ending of the NY Times says it all - 'He didn't have to do this' - joining the military that is. Even though PFC Menchaca's family did not want him to enter the military - he did - knowing full well what it could cost him. I am so grateful for these fine young people today that put their lives on the line in order to protect other's.

Thank you to PFC Menchaca's family for raising such a fine young man. He is, and will always be, a Hero.

Every sacrifice of one of our soldiers is painful.  But your sacrifice Kristian is especially painful because of the horror involved in your passing.  Know now that you will never ever be forgotten.  And I know that our country will move Heaven and Earth to hunt down and kill your murderers.

I will do all that I can to help make sure that they are found.  And while I am not a big mover and shaker... many, many people like me will raise up their voices and demand justice for you.  Our hue and cry will be heard.

God bless and preserve your family, friends, and community.  You sit at the right hand of God now.  Thank you on behalf of me and mine.

Ride Safe!!

I can't add anymore than what's been said, except to say thank-you,Kristian, for your unselfish service. You're the fine example of the youth of America. May you rest without pain and suffering, as your job on earth is done.

May God Bless this soldier's family and friends.
We all will be standing with you -- too many to
count, but with one heart and one message.

A sacrifice greater than anyone could imagine;
a life lifted-up and a Nation's appreciation given.
We will be standing in the abyss, with honor,
great respect, and sharing your grief.

And now, Kristian Menchaca you can rest easy,
knowing we will never, ever forget you and the
life that you led. We cry for you and will miss your
presence on this Earth. Your Mission is complete,
but our Mission is just beginning.

PGR brothers and sisters, drop all that you have
had planned and let us join together to spell out
a message to all that are listening -- that this
young, brave soldier means more to us than
anything. Kristian Menchaca is why we are.

It does not matter where this Mission is held and
it does not matter when this Mission is held, we
will be there -- just like Kristian was there for us.

haystack (and Mrs. haystack) here from Paige, TX. I have written about these two fine men, the sacrifice they made, and the honor and respect they are due from those of us for whom they fought and died.

These men deserve our respect, our honor, and our solemn vow to ride that last ride with them to their final resting place, to sit in heaven with our maker where they rightly belong.
