Houston-area soldier died in blast that killed CBS crew members

06/01/2006

Associated Press

A 35-year-old soldier from suburban Houston was killed by a car bomb in Iraq that also killed two CBS crew members and seriously injured a correspondent for the network, the Defense Department announced Thursday.

Capt. James A. Funkhouser of Katy died in Baghdad on Monday.

Funkhouser was near his Humvee during reconnaissance patrol operations when the car bomb detonated. The same explosion killed CBS News cameraman Paul Douglas and soundman James Brolan and critically injured correspondent Kimberly Dozier, officials at Fort Hood said.

An Iraqi interpreter also was killed in the blast, and six U.S. soldiers were injured.

Funkhouser had been assigned as an armor officer with the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade, 4th Infantry Division at Fort Hood since April 2005. He was deployed to Iraq in December.

Funkhouser, who had been in the Army since September 1993, had won various decorations and awards, including the Army Commendation Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

The explosion that killed Funkhouser is under investigation, officials at Fort Hood said.

Two other Fort Hood soldiers have died in Baghdad this week, the Pentagon said.

Spc. Bobby R. West, 23, of Beebe, Ark., died Tuesday from injuries suffered when a roadside bomb detonated near him during patrol. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division.

Cpl. Alexander J. Kolasa, 22, of White Lake, Mich., died Wednesday of noncombat causes. He was assigned to the 704th Main Support Battalion, 4th Brigade, 4th Infantry Division.
