I would like convey my deepest condolences to the family and friends of this American hero who stood tall for their homeland. I know this is a very sad time in your lives but remember you knew a hero first hand the rest of us just get to hear about them. Please know that your loved one is now serving in the Army of our Lord and Savior in heaven and the Lord said if I go to prepare a place for you,and if I go and prepare a place for you I will come again and recieve you unto myself that where I am there you may be also. Know that it says in the Bible in 2nd Corinthians 5:8 ,We are confident I say, willing rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. I pray that our LORD and SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST will bring all of you comfort for we know it is us left behind here on earth that suffer, for our loved ones are in HEAVEN with GOD and he will not allow them to suffer again as they have paid the ultimate price so as to allow us left here to enjoy the freedom we have here in America. No one can ever say that your loved one isn't a hero they were willing to serve when so many aren't or feel that they don't want to. I would like you to know that not just me but a country full of Americans are free because of the sacrifice they made in the name of freedom. May God Bless each and everyone of you

First and foremost, my sincerest condolences to Mrs. Bowman and all of the Bowman family.  You all will be in my thoughts and prayers for many months to come.  God’s blessings and God’s piece be with each and everyone of you.

As has been said here already the welcome we received in Princeton was amazing.  5 strangers (maybe we were just strange...) ride onto a farm in western IL and are welcomed by family like we were family.

Unlike many others, written words don’t come quickly for me.  I have many emotions and thoughts that require assembly.  Last night I took the digital equivalent of pen to paper and wrote my thoughts.

Please see here.  Please feel free to leave a comment.

God Bless the Bowman family, the Illinois Patriot Guard Riders and the members of our Military.

Respect,

Sitting here this morning... I find that words escape me to be able to legitimately say what this weekend meant - not only to me - but to all attending - and to the family. I've read others that seem to have done justice to capturing the moment... and I won't try to improve what has been accurately done already.

I would like to impart a brief story from the ride home...

As with every mission - but this one inparticular - I left with a heavy heart... and watery eyes. After final hugs to Mom and Dad Bowman, Mike, Joanne, the Bowman kids, and Greg's brothers... I said my goodbyes to my PGR brothers and sisters and hit the road for the 2 1/2 hour ride home.

Before departing for this mission... amid a flury of tears... I lowered my rear pegs in honor of my lost brother and had left them down the entire trip. As I left... I realized they were still down... but just couldn't bring myself to pull 'em up. It just felt like I would be leaving Greg behind if I did. As trivial as it may sound... I just couldn't do it.

As I headed up I-39, I passed the first windmill farm... every one of them... perfectly still. "That kind of sucks", I thought to myself. "Spend the money to put up a renewable energy source... and have them sitting idle," I continued the ride north. As I came upon the second - and larger - windmill farm... again... all the giants stood motionless. At this point I figured... why not...

"Hey Greg, if you got any connections up there... help a brother out," I said out loud as I rolled on at 80mph in the afternoon sun...

Just as I was approaching the last windmill... the one at the norhtern most part of the field... it started to turn. Almost instinctively, I began to smile with tears now staining my cheeks again. I slowed the bike down to watch this as long as I could. Best part... it was ok now. This was right.

"Thanks Greg," I said out loud. "I'll see you again. In the mean time... keep at the wind. Love you brother!"

With Greg's blessing... and a tear of happiness feeling the somehow... he heard me... I reached down, folded up the pegs, and rolled into the throttle.

On that plain old ordinary interstate... a great man took his place on the wind, and told a friend... it's ok... ride on...
Don't let this beautiful day go to waste.

A magical moment... in a ordinarily plain and random place. A fitting end to a weekend that honored a great man...

Greg -
I love you brother! Always will...
And the next time I feel the wind kicking up... I know... it's just you passing by to say "Hi".

Until we ride again...

In your honor and memory,
Jeff "Meatball" Lockhart

First, a thank you for the news link.....yup, tears.

Jeff (Meatball).....OMG, you truly got the tears welling, creating streams developing into rivers, flowing into an ocean. Thank you, Sir, for sharing.

Sat.....rode down with another Patriot Guard for the visitation. As we had to travel Rt 78, we stopped; walked the tracks of Greg's last ride here on earth. A very emotional experience.

Sun....was not in attendance of the service for Greg, however, he was with me throughout the day during a function for our area Veterans. Standing outside the Galena IL WalMart, a group of motorcylces drove in, parked in a convenient area for this one to walk up & chat. As I walked down the line, I asked if all were Harleys......nope, one lone Gold Wing. Talked with Greg, standing over this beautiful machine, appologizing for not being in Princeton; he understood.....

Quick story....I met Greg & Mike for the first time in Stockton IL. Being from the area, knowing where the lil' cemetary is in Shapsville (don't blink), Mike asked if I would guide the ride. Well, I took the long route....Rte 20 to Scout Camp Rd. Greg was positive (as others stated) that I was taking the wrong way.....was s'posed to take the "shortcut", mind you. The Patriot Guard Riders got the most beautiful tour; a piece IL's God's country. Then all of a sudden, there's Greg pushing me along, (think) he recognized a cupla points once we approached the shortcut's intersection which we should have come out from (if the shortcut had been taken). Now I sit here, knowing that the wrong way may have in fact been the right way.

My thoughts & prayers are with Mike & family, Joanne & family, the Bowman's Mom & Dad & brothers....and with you all.

Sam

Saturday meant alot to most of us. Hopefully we all gained new friends and alot of memories we can hold onto for a lifetime. I know I did.

When John and I made the offer to open our home and nobody called all week to take us up on the offer I was kind of disappointed. I will be honest. The way I deal with things like this is to try to help in whatever way I can. I wanted to do more but John stopped me because he didn't want it to seem like we were intruding so I left well enough alone and dropped it. Friday morning when I got the call from Dad Bowman telling me that they would like to be the ones to take me up on my offer I knew that it was all prearranged by God that our home was left open so they could stay. My heart sunk. I was excited and also scared to death. What an honor it was to have them come stay in our home. When they came Friday night we all sat down and visited until Mom Bowman was starting to fall asleep. They were exhausted and it was very understandable. We all gave in finally and went to bed. In the morning I had breakfast waiting for them when they got up because I wanted them to start the day off with something to give them energy and strength. And again we sat around and visited. I learned alot and have grown in this short time to love them very much. I see now why everyone loves Greg and Mike and the rest of the family so much. They had wonderful examples.

Dad Bowman said something at the end of the day Saturday I would like to convey to all and I quote "We all have to take one day at a time and move forward with our lives. We all have a hole in our hearts that are hurting and eventually as time goes on, that hurt will begin to heal and and the wound will get smaller. Then one day something will happen and the wound will break open and the tears will flow and when it does we need to stand up and start all over again and eventually the times between that happening will grow further and further apart. We will all hurt in our own ways but we still need to move forward."

Please, remember the good times. That is what Greg would want and I know that is what his family would want.

John went to the IL forum and posted some pics that were sent to him from one of our Indiana brothers that was having a hard time posting them. Please go and take a look.

And remember one important thing. Jesus said "I am the way, the truth, and the life, no man comes to the Father but through me" John 14:6 Do you have a personal relationship with Christ??? You never know when your time here on this earth will end. We all need to be prepared.

I am the wife of a Marine veteran. I stand by him with honor and respect.

Humbled to serve My Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ by doing whatever I can to show others the love of God by spreading the Gospel!!

Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father, but by me." John 14:6 It's not about "religion", it's about a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as your Saviour. Do you know Jesus personally??
He suffered and died for all of our sins and is offering the gift of eternal life. Please accept Him and you will receive his gift.

True Love is sacrificial giving...... not just good intentions!!

My name is Megan Bowman I am number 4 in the line up of Greg's kids. I just wanted to say to everyone who posted comments and showed up this weekend THANK YOU!! To see everyone that he touched was just amazing. To me he was (and still is) just dad, but he was so much more then that. I can't put into words what it meant to me to have his guys there. The Black Sheep was like his 2nd family. He loved to out on a mission that’s all I ever heard about. I had the honor to go on 2 missions with him. I wish I had more time to go on more with him.

Once again THANK YOU to everyone for your kind words and standing there to honor my dad.

One thing you should really know, without your mothers support and all you kids he would not have been able to do all that he did. So you all were a very large part of the mission weather you knew it or not.

From the rest of the PGR and the families, friends, and everyone else that worked with your dad, we wish to THANK YOU and your family for the support you all have given him through these last two years.

My second mission was in early 2006, in a very small town, deep in southern Illinois.
The services were broadcasted over a local radio station.
At one point in the services, the family took turns thanking God for their treasured time and memories of their loved one.

I admired their strength, but I was surprised too.
I questioned my faith and my beliefs.
I questioned God.

Now in my deep sorrow I am beginning to understand.

Thank you God for allowing me to know and treasure Greg Bowman.

with love and respects,
Scoot

To our extended PGR family,

How can we say “thank you” for being there for Greg and our family this past week? Not always in person, but through the “airwaves” as well.

Words seem so inadequate at a time like this.  We have followed the thread everyday and cried everyday.  I, Mom Bowman, was angered at first by the words being distributed by “the others”, then I thought, Greg must have done something really good for them to think he had been so important that they needed to come all the way from Kansas to do “their thing”.  AND I knew PGR would take care of the situation as Greg and Mike had done on the Missions we had been on with them.  When we came around the corner and saw the fire trucks and heard the loud church music, we knew “they” were there and we were, gratefully, protected.  Well done PGR!!  The marvelous lines of flags at the funeral home, at the church, and to Greg’s office.  Well done PGR!!!  I am so glad we decided to go on the Lancaster Mission in Stockton.  We met some of you for the first time that day,  you were on your first Mission.  Greg was directing traffic that was coming down from the cemetery when we approached him later, after standing flag lines at the funeral home and cemetery that day.  He said, “Mom, I will talk to you later, the family cars are coming now, I have to go take care of them and thanks for coming today”.  Mission First. How I would rather have been standing flag lines the past days instead of being on the “inside”.

My heart is broken and I know you may have some related feelings also.  I always knew that Greg would be an organizer, as are his brothers and sister, but I never expected our Son would be so recognized and loved by so many.  You will never know how loved we felt from those who traveled from near and far to honor Greg, to shake our hands or give us a hug. You all have become a very important part of our lives.  For right now, the PGR flag you gave to us lays over a banister near our kitchen and offices.  We want you to know it gets a gentle hand on it many times a day as we pass by.  We feel your love there. At times, our grief is overwhelming.

If any of you are out for a ride on the roads north of Polo, please stop in and see us.

You will always be welcome and hugs are a requirement.

Mission Completed, Mom and Dad Bowman

To Grandma Bowman, Mom & Dad, Joann, Mike, Joe, Dylan, Megan, Lauren, Frances, Stacy, Stephanie, Mike, Jeff, Rod, Paul and Everyone:

To all of you I pledge my never-ending love and devotion.  You have from me and all members of the Patriot Guard the utmost of our respect and admiration.  The other night, I sent out an e-mail to my fellow members. Please allow me to share that with you here as well.

                                                            One Week Ago Tonight

One week ago tonight, our lives were forever changed when the life of a Brother, a Mentor, a Friend was lost. I will not forget the pain of such a devastating kick in the gut.  Hearts were torn from all of our chests that night.

Never could I have imagined that we would witness the sons of such a wonderful man be the alter boys at their father's funeral mass, that I would receive the honor of carrying his two sons, sister and his lovely bride on my Wing on such a somber day.  I reached down to touch Joann during our ride and said it was my hope that she felt the love of our presence.  She started to cry and said: "Oh My God RO, Greg Used To Do That All The Time To Me!"  As we traveled down the street toward the law firm, I felt as though the load was made lighter by the showing of such incredible support by you equally incredible people.  She said to me that Greg would be and is so very humbled and proud.

In life, we were drawn together by the magnetic personality of a great man.  Just as a conductor with his orchestra in the performance of a symphony, he worked tirelessly to see that we all strived to achieve an even greater level of expectation.

In the celebration of his life, we will now carry on with an ever stronger foundation in the service of others.

                                                                                                      Love You Guys,
                                                                                                                RO

I would like to first extend my deepest condolences, and thanks to the entire Bowman family. I am honored to be able to say that this was my first mission with the PGR. I still can’t tell enough people of the experience of being in the presence of genuine compassion for our fellow man. The Bowman family greeting, feeding and opening their homes to everyone in attendance, the feeling of pride to hold a flag for a man that has helped to have many flags held up for others, being a part of a mans last mission when I just began what I hope to be many missions to carry on the work Greg started.

I never met Greg, but if Saturday was an indication of how he impacted the world, he was a great man and I will cherish the memory of being a part of what he started.

I rode down alone on a very cold day, but left having met a great family, some great people and a new found sense of pride. Thank you to the Bowman family and all the PGR.

Thank you to the PGR family for such an awesome tribute to my fallen hero. Greg was a rock, possibly the most dependable and fiercely loyal person I’ve ever known – a bear of a man. He was also my older brother by 3-years and someone I’ve looked up to my entire life.

While no one in the PGR has known Greg as long as I and the rest of the family have, it is obvious he had the same impact on his PGR family as he did on ours, and in a much shorter amount of time. This I saw in tears, emotion, sharing of memories, handshakes, and hugs – sometimes in silence when words simply could not be spoken. It was easy to tell those who knew him best as I greeted the PGR family, but what strikes me most is the impact he had on those who had met him only once or twice – or not at all. This is the sign of a great man and a leader. Greg was just that, and more.

Joann and the family gave me the honor of allowing me to wear Greg’s vest and hat on Saturday. This was noticed quickly by some who rode often with him, and if it brought additional sorrow, I apologize. For all, it should be a sign that what Greg believed in, and what the Patriot Guard stands for lives on. For me, I could feel Greg’s hand on my back holding me up, pushing me forward, and telling me to buck up, “I could do this, and you can too.”

Greg was proud of the PGR and what it stands for.

I end with the quote from Greg’s last email as shared by Rocky as it is an important message to all of us. Whether it is the next mission, a good cruise in the country, a work project, a family gathering, a social event, or simply telling someone special you love them, everyday is beautiful despite any obstacles in our way, perceived or otherwise, and should be lived to its fullest.

"This beautiful day is simply too good to waste." quote Greg Bowman - 9/9/07

I just ran across this thread and learned of the tragic death of Greg Bowman. As I read through these condolences - the photos, the anecdotes, the thanks and remembrances of a loving daughter - I was really moved that this had happened to someone so obviously dedicated, respected, and loved. Unless Greg was on a mission somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin I probably never rode a mission with him, but through all the words poured out here I feel like I've also lost a friend.

My thanks to Greg Bowman for helping to make this organization one that so many of us feel honored to be a part of and my condolences to all of you who did know and ride with Greg.

Not sure how many will see this, but I'm trying to think positive. "Greg's" RC hat will fly from the SE WI flag pole on Saturday the 13th at the annual Anti Al-Queda BBQ in Watertown. Sunday the 14th makes one year that it's been flown in his honor at every mission up here. It's time to bring this hat back home. If any of our IL. brothers and sisters can assist me in contacting Greg's folks to see if they'll be home, I think it's time to escort it all the way home. It just seems like the right thing to do. Hopefully someone south of the border can work out the route and timing. If not, I'll make the journey alone, but I really feel it should arrive on 2 wheels. I'll hoist it up the pole one last time, say a prayer, then turn it over to Mom and Dad Bowman. If ayone's available to join me, get back to me and help spread the word. To Honor a PGR Hero.

Because It's The Right Thing To Do.
