I can't remember a time when I was ever prouder to be associated with any group of people. I hope I don't have a reason to see y'all again too often but I'll keep on participating in anything within my "radius of operations" which got at least some bigger after seeing y'all in action.

I want to say a special thanks to the gentleman that realized I was having problems and took over my flag during the gravesite services. I'm stubborn enough that I would not have left my position without relief and I was dangerously close to collapsing. I'll do my best not to create a situation like that again, even if it means passing on missions I might otherwise take part in. I should have known better than to think I could handle that hike up and down the highway without problems and I'll try to be smarter next time.

Chris, thank you.  Seeing what PGR accomplished today added some miles to the distance I'll be willing to drive for future missions, but I also learned a lesson about my physical limitations. The next time I know there's going to be some walking involved like today I'll be smart enough to just stay home and be with you in spirit only. I'll be fine after I get some rest but I'm not going to be ready in time to take part in either of the two upcoming Illinois missions that I'm aware of. I'm sure we'll meet again but here's hoping it's not too soon.

I'd like to say what a pleasure it was to meet Mike, and Rose and many other PGR members at this mission. What a great turnout to honor this Hero. I was proud to be a part of it.

I'd also like to give a special thank you to Katy Hoelscher. Several of us were on our way back to Indiana and had stopped to eat when she came up to me in the restuarant and said how proud she was of us (the PGR) and what we do. She told me that she would like to show her appreciation and gave us a generous donation to be applyed to our meal. I told her it wasn't necesary, but she insisted. Katy - I sincerely hope you consider joining us. It would be an honor to stand with you anytime, anyplace. Thank you again from all of us from Indiana. Also, thank you Illinois for making us feel at home.

It was truly an honor to be a part of the PGR for this memorial ride. CWO2 Chris Donaldson paid the full price for our freedom to assemble and pray in support of his family. May he rest in peace.

I've posted some pictures I took Tuesday and Saturday at my place.

"Sgt Hook", an active duty Sgt Major who still goes along on CH-47 missions when the brass'll let him, and one of the most respected an loved men in the milblogs community, has been giving Patriot Guard riders some good publicity. I assumed he knew about PGR and left a short comment on his post about the crash telling him we'd be there for CW2 Donaldson. Turns out he'd never heard of us before, but now he's a big fan. That'll be good for membership.

I would just like to say thank you all for your honor and respect. CWO Donaldson was a high school classmate of my wife. She was shocked when she heard the news last weekend. We are stationed in Groton CT and were unable to get away to come home and show our respects. When we heard that the PGR was getting involved in this my wife called my father in Strasburg IL and told him about it. He had the pleasure of unoffically joining you for part of the escort from the airport and speaking with a few of you later that day. He got choked up when telling me of his impression of the PGR. He said that it is a wonderful experience that he will rember to his lats days; the privledge to ride with such an honorable and compassionate gorup. As a serving member in the US Navy it renews my faith in the people of our great country to hear of people like you and strengthens my determination to perform my duty to the best of my ability so that I may deserve the respect that you all have. To CWO Donaldson, Fair Winds and Following Seas, Shipmate. To all of the PGR and their supporters, Thank you and God bless.

First and Formost I would personally like to say "Thank you" to all that took part in the ride today. "Thank you" for Honoring our fellow Fallen Hero by standing by, showing the family respect and diginty in which they deserved, also to our community and shilding us from the protesters. You did such a GREAT job that I do not believe I seen any of them along my walk to and from the Church! What I did see is YOU holding your flags, standing tall and Proud to be of service to us all. I seen many of you saluting our Hero as the procession the church's cemetery past you by. I feel Blessed to have had you all present today. But never did I see or hear a protester! Job well done!

I am hoping to put your link on our AFES web page in a week or so.

Thank you!

This was my first mission and boy was it something!!  I am also from the area and proud of the support that we received from both the family and other local people.  My wife went up to some of the family after the ceremony and was asked if the protestors showed up.  They said that they didn't see them.  Which was exactly what we wanted.  So we did our job and apparently we did it very well!!!

May you rest in peace, Chris Donaldson.  Thank you for serving our country and giving us the freedom we have!!!

I guess I should let y'all know what I just said about you on my blog:

Goodbye to a hero

Chief Warrant Officer 2 Christopher B. Donaldson was laid to rest with full military honors, including a 3-aircraft CH-47 flyby, on Friday 19 May 2006 in a peaceful little cemetery just outside the quiet little town of Shumway, Illinois. May he rest in peace.

The slime showed up as promised but left before the funeral began. Looking toward its allocated location from the church entrance nothing was to be seen but a sea of American flags and American patriots. Nothing was to be heard except the engine and rotor noise of an Illinois State Police helicopter, there, apparently, to protect the slime from big bad scary bikers. The helicopter left almost immediately after the slime did, possibly to guarantee its safe passage out of the area. After the slime left, the Patriot Guard Riders in attendance held their stations till nearly the end of the funeral, then regrouped to provide an alley of flags along the short drive from the church to the adjoining cemetery, then regrouped again to help provide an appropriate backdrop for the graveside services.

In my entire life (I turned 56 today) I cannot recall ever being associated with a finer group of people than the ones I spent my morning with. Click here to learn more about Patriot Guard Riders, then please give serious thought to joining this fine organization. You don't have to be a biker, or a veteran, or anything else in particular to join. You just have to care. You do care, don't you?

I'll try to get some pictures from the Chief Donaldson mission up soon, assuming they came out OK. Right now a big day is beginning to catch up with me.

Hundreds gather to pay final respects

BILL GRIMES

Hundreds of mourners gathered Friday in and outside Faith Lutheran Church in Shumway to pay their final respects to Chief Warrant Officer 2 Christopher Brian Donaldson.

Donaldson, an Army helicopter pilot, was killed May 5 in a helicopter crash in eastern Afghanistan. His funeral and burial were held two days after what would have been his 29th birthday.

"Chris Donaldson was a hero in the truest sense of the word," said the Rev. Jason Rensner in his funeral message — a message that was relayed via speaker to hundreds of mourners unable to gain access to the church sanctuary.

"He served his country with pride," Rensner said. "He served his country because he wanted to and again — he served with pride."

The 50-minute service inside the church was followed by a procession of several hundred feet to the church's cemetery. Burial was conducted with full military rites.

More than 100 members of the Patriot Guard Riders, a group of motorcycle enthusiasts who offer support at military funerals, more than offset a handful of protesters from Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kan. Westboro members regularly protest America's military effort at soldier funerals nationwide.

Despite the fear of confrontation, there was none Friday. A stiff police presence — and Illinois 33 — separated protesters from other mourners. No incidents were reported.

A new law signed by the governor earlier this week requires protesters stay 200 feet away from funeral services and that they are not disruptive 30 minutes prior to, during or following the service.

See Saturday's edition of the Effingham Daily News for a more complete story on the funeral.

To all in Illinois, it was an honor to be with you all today, whatever state you were from. I finally made it back home to Kentucky and I was very glad that I was there to help honor Christopher Donaldson. I didn't catch many names but the ride captains did an excellant job as I'm sure they usually do. The town was incredible with their outpouring of support of both Chris and us. Again, I was just honored to be with you in Illinois and hope everyone else made it home safe. I know at least two motorcycles got rained on going out east 33 so I hope you made it okay. Also, I apologize to the last 6 bikes on the way to the church. I finally realized that I should have let you all pass me but I didn't realize I was the last vehicle. Sorry about that but I was watching for you. It turned out great anyways!

I offer my prayers to the family of our lost Hero for the many long days and night to come.

My hats off to you Rose, Chris and all the others that did the scouting and setting up of this mission. You did a fine job. It was an Honor for me to stand today with such Outstanding men and women.

Every mission I have been on has been different. Every mission has had different weather. Every Brother, Sister, Grand parents, Mother and Father, different. The sad thing they all have in common is losing a son or daughter.

As I ride home I think, like we all do. I feel an empty spot in my heart for the family, knowing what they will have to deal with in the time to come. But as I ride I look at the sky, trees, birds and so on. I tend to look at them in a different way after a mission. I enjoy them different way.

It is men like Christopher B. Donaldson and all that went before him that make all of this possible.

While riding back home there must have been 2 dozen people that honked waved. One poor soul almost had a car accident while waving to me. All the while I was thinking Christopher, they are really waving to you!

It is men like Christopher B. Donaldson and all that went before him that make all of this possible. Thank you Chris.

Rest in peace Christopher, our prayers will forever go out to your family.

Rocky

Why do we do this, you ask?
Why bother to stand out in wind and rain for someone unknown?
Why do we ride through torrents chilled to the bone?
The answer is simple: “Because, Never Again!”

“We Rode With Respect and Walked With Respect”

Today the Patriot Guard honored Chief Warrant Officer 2 Christopher B. Donaldson who died serving his country in Afghanistan in a tragic helicopter accident.  The homecoming escort from Altamont to Effingham on Tuesday was more moving than words with by-standers, flags, yellow and black ribbons, candles, and signs honoring Chris.  After a week or so of threatening weather, pleasant skies appeared for the day of the funeral by some miracle.

I wish I could bring Chris back but all I can do for him is show him my love through the organization of this mission and the careful use of time off from work.  He belongs to America, I am an American, and so that makes part of him mine and yours.

The bond shared on this mission among the guard was stronger than words. All things aside, our newly signed Rest In Peace Law had been tested today.  It was a quiet and solemn occasion.

I know that if the police or I had asked for a blockade in the middle of a pond, that a dozen PGR members would scramble with flags into pond scum to shield the mourners from any disruption that may occur.  This was exemplified by the fact that we had to walk a good distance from our designated parking area to the funeral (about 1/3 mile I estimate).

I invite you to share your thoughts on this ride.  There must have been 200 of us there and that must mean 200 thoughts at least.

I must thank my local area coordinators that helped me overcome my distance from Effingham: Dave and Becky, Dan, Sean and many others who know who you are.

Dana,
Thank you.
Chris made an impression on me like no other and that's saying alot.I don't get impressed by people that easily.
I know Chris died giving me the freedom just to be able to sit where I am and do this. And for that I will be forever grateful.
He and All the others should be honored in such a way.I can only try to do this for Chris. He deserves it and much more in my opinion.
The Effingham News is running the story and there is a comment on there that hurt a little. But you know that is what Chris was fighting for.Amongst other things,Freedom of Speech.Thank you for the offer of help.I will keep that in mind as I am in Michigan.Send me your email and we can definetely keep in touch.
Again Thank You.

Kathy,
I think what you are trying to do is wonderful.  What better overpass to be named than the one that leads to Shumway and Beecher City.  Also, in case you didn't know Chris' football number in high school was 33.  He was known as "Number 33 Dirty D".  We all still called him Dirty to this day.  I know we have never met, but I would love to offer my assistance if needed.  D was an amazing person, and he deserves so much.

Here's a couple of photos showing most of the Indiana crew attending the Effingham, IL. mission... and LadyRanger from Kentucky. The two 82nd Airborne soldiers were from Ft. Bragg. They knew CWO2 Chris Donaldson personally, as they attended training together. They are CWO2 Mike Turner and CWO2 Jimmy C. Valencia.

Dana and Kathy,

The mission of your friend and cousin CWO2 Donaldson was my first mission as a new member of the PGR. I speak for myself here but I'm sure it is resounded in the hearts of many of the riders who attended the internment of Chris into Gods hands.

I ride to honor the Hero, who fought to preserve my right to ride free,
I ride to honor the family, to do my part to help them see what was so important to their son, daughter, sister or brother that they would lay down their life to protect,
I ride to show strength; to the community who is simply an extension of our Hero's family for each and every one feels in their heart the loss of a son,
I ride to show pride in a country whose citizens are willing to endure the heart aches and pain of conflict to protect the rights of those who are not willing.

Being a preacher son from long ago I would like to end with a benediction my Father used often:

May the saving grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, the fellowship and communion of the Holy Spirit, bless, preserve and keep you, the Lord graciously with his favors look upon you and give you peace.

Amen.

If you want lasting peace,
Win the War.

Hello, my name is Dana Poe.  Donaldson was one of my very best friends.  We grew even closer after he joined the Army.  We would talk on the phone at 3 am when he was stationed in Korea, and other odd times when he was in Germany and other various stations.  I can't believe we won't do that anymore.  I can't believe I will never see that beautiful face or hear that unforgettable giggle ever again.  See, nothing like this was ever supposed to Donaldson.  He was my "Superman."  I am still waiting for the call that this was all a big mistake, even though deep down I know that call will never come.
I joined this site to tell all of you THANK YOU.  I stood in awe on Tuesday at the funeral home as I waited for my friend.  Seeing all of you on Friday with your flags literally took my breath away.  Even though you did not know Chris, I wanted to let you know that he truely deserved everything he received.  He was an amazing person that every girl fell in love with and every guy wanted as a friend.  No one will ever be compared to him.  As I sit here with tears streaming, I am forever moved by this experience.  There is a special place in Heaven for all of you.  THANK YOU!!!!

To All Patriot Guard Riders,
I would like to take this opportunity to say a "Huge Thank You" to all of you who attended the Funeral of CWO2 Christopher B.Donaldson.
It has been about 35 years since I've been to a Military Funeral and I've forgotten just how overwhelming they are.Funerals in general are bad enough,no one ever wants a loved one to leave.
I myself hate funerals,especially when it's a good guy/gal.
I would like to just one day read an obit that says "That child Molester died today,Thank Goodness" or "The guy who sold drugs to my chhild was shot in the head and killed,Good Riddens".But No,All I'm reading these days are about the Great Heroes. It's way too sad.I will miss Chris and so will hundreds of others.
Chris was an inspiration to many.He touched so many lives.Including mine. You never wanted the conversation to end when you were speaking with him.He always had something interesting to say.
What I saw upon exiting the church on Friday was astonishing. You all were standing Proud for my Cousin. What a well deserved reward.Thank you.As we stood at the gravesite it started sprinkling."Tears from Heaven", someone said.I believed that.Chris is now with God wearing more than his wings. He now sports a shiny halo and is smiling down on all who loved him.
Thank you all for everything you did for my Cousin and everything you continue to do for others.
Ride With Pride & Be Safe

Sincerely,
Kathy Donaldson

definitly a trying time, although i did not get to sign in due to a rain burst that made us stop for a while, the ride from joliet was uneventful and it was an honor to be part of something that needed to be done for the family, thoughts and prayers go out to them.

A comment left on my blog post about the CW2 Donaldson mission:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was in attendance to lay my Army Brother Chris to rest traveling from Ft Bragg, NC. I was with out a doubt amazed on the presence and meaning of the Patriot Riders. I am almost speechless of what I saw and feel of what these true Americans do for our Military. I truely respect, appreciate , and admire what you did for the Donaldson family, Community, and my own benefit. Thank you and God Bless....

To all my Illinois PGR brothers and sisters. After reading through the posts of how great a job all of you did in showing the respect and honor this young man earned, you have made me even more proud to tell others down here in Alabama that, "Yes, I was born and raised in Illinois". Keep up the good service to our service men and women. Some day I'll ride with you. Till then, Godspeed and ride safe.

Just want to say a big thank you to all who attended this mission. Our show of respect for Chris Donaldson was appreciated by the family and all who attended. The one good thing that can be said about the UGS is they have ignited, inspired and united patriotic Americans all over this land and filled us with a resolve that no soldier will ever be laid to rest and have to endure the taunts and insults from that misguided group. I am very proud to have been associated with the Patriot Guard, The American Legion Riders, Bravo Company and the others who just came to strengthen our numbers and play a part in this important service to Chris. Thank you all,
Dan

It was truly an honor to be a part of the PGR for this memorial ride. CWO2 Chris Donaldson paid the full price for our freedom to assemble and pray in support of his family. May he rest in peace.

This mission was my first dealing with the dimwits from Kansas.
The huge turnout by the PGR and other groups, (ALR, Red Knights, etc), was more than anyone probably thought of beforehand, and we let the unwanteds know without one word that we will continue to not only provide comfort to the families of our soldiers, but that our numbers continue to grow with each vile epithet they spout and with every posterboard sign they raise aloft.
Despite a few groups having the 20% chance of rain find them along the way, and the ISP's initial boundary, the PGR observed and defended CWO2 Donaldson's funeral in such a manner that I doubt the State police will ever keep us that far away again.
Our soldier is now at Home in Peace-
As They Watched Over Us, We Shall Watch Over Them...

As ParrotHD said...."What a day."

First, I would like to extend once again my condolences to the family and friends of Chris Donaldson.  I would also like to thank them...not only for their ultimate sacrifice, but for allowing us the privilege and honor of standing with them today to pay our respects for Chris.  His sacrifice will not be forgotten.

The support from the community, local law enforcement and the ISP was outstanding.

To Rose, Chris and all the other captains....hats off for a job well done.

I was very proud to stand with you all today.  Job well done to all.

I am posting a few pics, and there are more on the this link.

As part of the Indiana contigent of riders attending this mission, I have to say how proud I am of our neighbors to the West. Mike and Chris, it was a great honor meeting the both of you. I will be proud to stand and serve with you anytime!

I must also say that when I approached you with the additional mission request I had received from Twister, you two fine gentlemen did everything in your power to see that we collectively accomplished this task. I called Jeff and told him we "got 'er done". A million Thanks was passed your way.

In closing, I just want to say I was truly blessed to be at CWO2 Christopher Donaldson's mission today. It made getting up at 3AM and hitting the road very worthwhile. I will do this anyday to honor a fine Fallen Hero such as this. Standing with all my fine brothers and sisters from Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and all other states in attendance; as well as meeting some of the family, 82nd Airborne Officers, and other military in attendance, only added icing on the cake. Congratulations on a successful mission!

Oh, and the Chinooks flying by in the "missing man" formation was one of the most moving sights I have ever seen!

What a day! The new Illinois law was tested successfully. While the Illinois State Police initially considered us as demonstrators too, they finally relented and recognized the PGR as invited guests of the family. We were then able to cross the 200 foot barrier line and line up parallel to the highway, effectively blocking any visual line between the UGs and the church. Had we been made to stay where we were initially, the UGs would have had an unobstructed line of sight to the front of the church. Thank you ISP troopers for doing the right thing!

While the PGR provide a wall of flags blocking sight, the circling helicopter and barking K-9 drowned out any noise the UGs may have been making. For all intents and purposes, they were not there!

Captains Rose and Chris, I enjoyed meeting you and working on this mission with you. I am ready, willing and able to do it again if this sad circumstance hits this close to home in the future. It was good meeting and working with Dan also. Perhaps one of the best things was working with Effingham County Sheriff John Monett. He is the consumate law professional. Becky has always spoken highly of him and I now know why. Of course thank you to all who rode, whether PGR or not, you rode (and walked) with respect and your actions honored Christopher Donaldson. You also impressed the troopers who made the decision to let us in. As Trooper Hollo stated, we (PGR) "kept up our end of the deal". That will go a long way in dealing with the ISP in the future.

Again thanks to everyone! Now it's time for this old medic to hit the rack.
