The President of the Bank I work at has approved our involvement (along with State of Illinois owned buildings) in honoring all Illinois Service personal that have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom by flying the flag at half mast on the day of their funeral.
I have been given the honor of being the point person to assure the flag is lowered on the assigned day. If I can not be present with the rest of the PGR's in attendance; I will be there in spirit. I have a special flag tie that I only wear on these days. Unfortunately, I have been wearing the tie too often.
To inform all bank employees and the other tenants of the building why the flag is lowered; I post as much information about the young men in the lunch room and on a common computer drive.
My thoughts are with the family and friends of Caleb A. Lufkin that have to travel down a road not of their choosing. My wishes are that the road will be short and smooth.

This nation owes a debt of gratitude to this hero, and all the others, that can never be re-paid. We, as a nation, are able to put our heads down on the pillow at night in peace and security because of this hero, the ones who came before and the ones who will follow. May the peace of our Blessed Father comfort the hearts of the family of this hero.
THE FINAL INSPECTION The soldier stood and faced God, Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining, Just as brightly as his brass. "Step forward now, you soldier, How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek? To My Church have you been true?" The soldier squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't. Because those of us who carry guns, Can't always be a saint. I've had to work most Sundays, And at times my talk was tough. And sometimes I've been violent, Because the world is awfully rough. But, I never took a penny, That wasn't mine to keep... Though I worked a lot of overtime, When the bills got just too steep. And I never passed a cry for help, Though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God, forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears. I know I don't deserve a place, Among the people here. They never wanted me around, Except to calm their fears. If you've a place for me here, Lord, It needn't be so grand. I never expected or had too much, But if you don't, I'll understand." There was a silence all around the throne, Where the saints had often trod. As the soldier waited quietly, For the judgment of his God. "Step forward now, you soldier, You've borne your burdens well. Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets, You've done your time in Hell."
Patriotism is not a short and frenzied outburst of emotion but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime |
