Please accept our sincere condolences for the loss of your loved one, Floyd Mathews, United States Navy, Submarine Service, World War I, and World War II Veteran and Great American Hero. In a recent post on the Georgia Forum, I was led to believe that one of the only two remainging Veterans of World War I had just passed away, leaving Frank Buckles of W.Va as the only surviving WW I Veteran. I am sorry and sad to see our World War I veterans leaving us so rapidly. Thank You Sir for your service to our country and our Freedom during World War I, and World War II. I Salute You With my deepest Respect, May you Rest In Peace, your mission here is complete, sail on, sail on, with the wind in your sails and the sun on your back, sail on to your journey's end where the shores of heaven await your arrival. We salute you , My Friend
Final Inspection
The soldier stood and faced God, Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining. Just as brightly as his brass. "Step forward now, soldier. How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek? To My Church have you been true?" The soldier squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't. Because those of us who carry guns, Can't always be a saint. I've had to work most Sundays, And at times my talk was tough. And sometimes I've been violent, Because the world is awfully rough. But, I never took a penny, That wasn't mine to keep.... Though I worked a lot of overtime. When the bills just got too steep. And I never passed a cry for help, Though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God, forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears. I know I don't deserve a place, Among the people here. They never wanted me around, Except to calm their fears. If you've a place for me here, Lord. It needn't be so grand. I never expected or had too much, But if you don’t, I’ll understand. There was a silence all around the throne, Where the saints had often trod. As the soldier waited quietly, For the judgment of his God. "Step forward now, soldier you’ve borne your burdens well. Walk peacefully on Heaven’s streets; you’ve done your time in Hell."

| Lord, please comfort and grant your peace that surpasses all human understanding to the family and friends of Mr. Floyd Matthews, United States Navy, WWI and WWII Veteran. Amen. This brave man answered the call of his country and his sacrifice will not be forgotten. It is with great sadness that Alabama bids goodbye to her oldest living veteran and the United States bids goodbye to the oldest living submariner. Matthews family, hold your heads very high, you walk in the footsteps of a giant of a man. Floyd Matthews is a true red, white, and blue American hero. Take heart in that there are many Americans, many who have never met him, honoring Mr. Matthews for his courage and his many years of service to this nation. There are also many Americans, and again many who do not know Mr. Matthews or your family, praying for you right now. Call upon the Lord and He will strengthen you during this time of great loss. 1 Samuel 7:5...I will pray for you unto the Lord. |
