Updated 02 Nov 07 at 1312 EDT by Cagerbob

THIS IS THE FINAL MISSION PLAN FOR BRAD WINCHESTER

U.S. Army Veteran, PGR Arlington National Cemetery Sr. Ride Captain Brad D. Winchester, 55 of Alexandria, VA.

He honorably served his country, its fallen Heroes, its wounded veterans of all branches of service, the Veterans Administration, his fellow Americans and his PGR brothers and sisters. Service was his life, and his passion.  He touched many lives. He was every Hero's older brother, comrade at arms, and every family's strong arm of support.

Now we ride Brad's final mission. We will honor him -- he who honored so many. He is our Hero! He will be missed!

Brad is to be laid to his final rest in the Columbarium on the hallowed grounds of Arlington National Cemetery on 04 December, 2007 at approximately 1500 hours.  He will receive full military honors! He will be honored and celebrated by his family, his friends, his fellow PGR riders, and his comrades at arms.  There will be a Memorial Service to celebrate Brad's life and service at 1200 hours at the  Vienna Moose Lodge, 9616 Courthouse Rd, Vienna, Va.

PGR Mission Plan - Brad Winchester - 04 December, 2007
=============================================

Some PGR riders will assume a different than usual role in this mission.  We will be there for Brad - not only as the usual Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) PGR Honor Guard, but also as members of the funeral party - as friends and co-riders and, yes, as comrades-in-arms.

For the ANC services, PGR riders will be separated into two groups: the PGR Honor Guard; and members of the funeral party. We will be soliciting volunteers to man the Honor Line and to render honors to Brad on this his final ANC mission. This will allow the ANC PGR team and other PGR riders, who wish to do so, to become members of the funeral party, close to their friend and co-rider.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Memorial Service - 1200 hours - Vienna Moose Lodge, 9616 Courthouse Rd, Vienna, Va

PGR Staging - Ride Captains - 1030 hrs - Moose Lodge (To organize vehicle arrival "triage", parking)
PGR Staging - Other Riders -   1045-1100 hrs - Moose Lodge

Escorted Procession to  Marine Corps Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) & then to the ANC Administration Building

    Immediately following the Memorial service

ANC Services - From the Administration Building at approximately 1500 hours

Procession will depart from the Admin Bldg,
will meet the Caisson and Honor Guard as directed in the Cemetery,
and will proceed from there to the Columbarium for final services.

Riders may be split into 2 groups at Admin Bldg departure - one to accompany the procession, and one to proceed directly to a parking location near the Columbarium. This split is necessary due to the difficulty of safely accommodating a large number of motorcycles in the slow walk behind the caisson & also to facilitate setting the honor line by those not joining the funeral party.  How to make the split depends on the number of bikes the ANC staff decide is safe, and accomodatable.  More will be announced in a future post, or at the staging area.

All participants are urged to arrive with the procession from the Memorial service.

Those guests who do not join the escorted procession from the memorial service (Moose Lodge) must arrive at the ANC Admin Bldg  no later than 1430 hours, & park as directed by the ANC staff.

Added information will be posted as plans mature and some decisions are made on logistical items.

If any of you wish to speak at the Memorial service, please let me know via email (below)

17 Oct 07 - OFFICIAL UPDATE - BRAD'S SERVICES:

Today we learned the date of Brad's services at Arlington National Cemetery (ANC)

Brad will be cremated, and he will be buried:

--  With Full Military Honors (Caisson, Honor Guard, and Band)
--  Friday, January 11, 2008 at approximately 3:00 pm
--  From the ANC Administration Building at 2:30pm

I am working with the family to schedule a Memorial Service here in the DC area - most likely to precede the ANC ceremonies, to end with an escort of the family to the Admin Building, along the route Brad would have followed if he were leading a mission himself. We are expecting a large number of PGR riders, Moose Riders and other local riders who knew and loved, or just met or heard about Brad.  All will be welcome on this final mission of our PGR Hero.

Hopefully, the details will be worked out over the next several days - and  will be published here.

Please note: this long delay is a function of the busy schedule at ANC, the limited number of slots for full military honors, and the number of heroes from the "greatest generation" that are now being honored at ANC.

 Ride Safe, Ride Together . . . Let's Roll! . . . Freedom is NOT Free!!

Brad's family has confirmed he is to be laid to rest in the hallowed ground of Arlington National Cemetery - at a date that is currently being determined by cemetery officials.
Once that date is passed along, a detailed mission plan will be posted.

Brad, you are riding with the angels, as you so well deserve.
We will Stand For You as You Have Stood For Those Who Stood for US.
Rest in peace, my brother!

I just got a phone call moments ago.  Another of our brothers has died in a tragic motorcycle accident.  Details are sketchy at moment. However, I was notified that Arlington Ride Captain Brad Winchester, someone I considered a good friend, died last night in a scooter accident in Myrtle Beach.  No details on services as of yet.  I am sure we will want to step up to honor this Hero, Veteran, and Patriot Guard Rider as he deserves.

I loved Brad as a brother and fellow rider. I will forever remember his smile, the clasp of his hand and the hug of brothers. I don't know how many mission we road together, at this moment, having just learned of his passing, they are a blur to me. From saving us on the Wreaths Across America ride into DC, to all of the honor missions that he led and road, I can't think of a finer man, a finer brother, to have had the honor of riding with.

I know that he was greeted in heaven last night by the many fine young men and women that he road for. Welcoming him home.

I was going to take my 3x5 flag off my bike this morning. But I am going to fly that flag today in his memory.

To the friends and family of Brad...

My heart is so heavy for u right now.  I never had the privilege of meeting or riding with Brad; but I know he was a true patriot, a wonderful man, greatly respected, and will be deeply missed.

Thank you, Brad, for all you have done and especially for all you have done to honor our service members and their families.  Rest in peace.

Blessings to the Winchester family... May He hold you in the comfort of his hands and give you peace and understanding in your time of need.

I have spoken with Dave Sloan and he is working now to confirm this.  He wants to believe that it is not but I think inside........he believes it is true.  I do as well.

Doc, thank you for posting this.  I know that you and Brad were close.  My condolences to you.

I have never met Brad Winchester.  I have, however, watched his work alongside the other members of the PGR's elite unit.........the Arlington Team.  I can tell you from watching the mission flow that Brad Winchester was about one thing:  Honor.

Y'all, please ride safe.  Watch out for deer.  Watch out for the 4 wheelers.  Watch out for each other.  I don't know how much more bad news I can take.

Let us remember Brad for the man he was.  And please pray for the female rider injured in the same accident.  I do not know yet whether she had a connection with Brad because I don't have names.  I do know that she was critically injured.

While you're at it........pray for Tony and if you don't mind, pray for me too.  All I can do at this point is stare at a computer monitor and cry.

PGR team members:

Hoping against hope, I tried to find that this was not true, but have just had confirmation two ways that the rider down was indeed our beloved and honored Brad Winchester - May he rest in peace and ride with the angels (as we all know from knowing him, he definitely will do).

Brad,

We will all miss you: your family, your fellow PGR riders, and the Heroes you will not be able to ride in support of.

Brother, with tears on my cheeks, I bid you farwewell.

Brother, I will stand with honor at your side on your final mission.

Go with God!!

Thanks for letting me know you, and ride with you!

From the Post 177 Commander

Comrades,

I had the distinct privelege of meeting Brad doing what he did so often, honoring fallen Heroes. I met Brad outside a funeral home in Vienna, about a month and a half ago, when I had occasion to pay my respects to a fallen, active duty Army Sergeant. I was so impressed with the patriotism displayed by Brad and his fellow Patriot Guard Riders, I engaged them in conversation and invited them to our membership meeting last month and offered our post in support of their mission.

He will be missed. Please, let me offer my condolences and on behalf of the Post offer whatever we can do to help ease this time of sorrow. Doc, please keep us advised of the arrangements and please do offer the post home for a reception. I, and the rest of Post 177 would be honored to be permitted to participate in Brad’s service.

Brad, you will be missed by so many. May God bless you and what you stood for and may others take inspiration in your actions. May your soul rest in peace.

Elaine and I can proudly say it was an honor to have met and have ridden with Brad. Brad was my first mission Ride Captain at Arlington National Cemetery. In the last 10 months, I got to know Brad as a Senior Ride Captain of the PGR and veteran, two things, that without words, speak volumes to his dedication and sense of duty to those who served and continue to serve. You will be missed and not forgotten. Elaine and I will stand with you one more time, and you will be with us each time we stand.

Death of Brad Winchester
by greyparrotgirl

I don't know if any of you have heard, but Brad Winchester was killed last night coming into Myrtle Beach on his bike. His girlfriend, Nan, was struck by a car while crossing the street to get to him. She passed away later in the hospital.

Brad has been a very good friend to my boyfriend (Dave Garrison) and I. He was a Ranger in the Viet Nam War and worked for the Department of Veterans' Affairs producing films and other media supporting the Veteran cause. Brad was all about serving his country and upholding patriotic principles. He spend many hours helping wounded and disabled soldiers at Walter Reed. He will be greatly missed.

His family (father, brother, sister, and sister-in-law) live in Utah. They are having his body shipped there, and the funeral will take place there.

I have asked for that thread to be locked. I don't want assumptions being made about what will or will not happen until we get the 'WORD.'

I did e-mail Alica to tell her what I was doing and my reasons for doing so.

Most of us are in shock or denial or lala land and we don't need to speculate or be confused as to what the MISSION for Brad will be  until those decisions are made and confirmed.

I hope you understand.

Words completely fail me at this time.  Having met Brad on previous missions, the PGR could not have asked for anyone more dedicated to our Mission Statement and to our Fallen Heroes, past and present.

This type of news is becoming too commonplace of late.

Rest in eternal peace Brad.  May God watch over you and your family.  My sincere condolences to all.

With Sincere Respects,

Just to let everyone know - the plans are not final, and there is a lot to be done.

We have some issue of who is the next of kin and who is therefore going to designate when and when Brad is to be buried.

Many of us who rode with thim know he wished to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

We also know that his family might like to have him buried in the west, near his mother.

The last tentative word from those in contact with the family, is that the family is in the process of re-examining their wishes, given the insight provided by what Brad has done over the past years with the PGR, and also insight on what he has been telling his friends and riding companions.

PLEASE - LET'S NOT JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS AND STATE THINGS AS FACT WHEN WE ALL KNOW HOW HARD IT IS FOR FANILIES TO MAKE THESE TYEPS OF DECISONS IN THEIR TIME OF GREAT SORROW.

We will keep you informed as decsions are made by the folks who need to make those decisons.

I am stunned. Woody and I learned of this tragedy while visiting Tony in Danville's Hospital. We were and still are dumbstruck. My associations with Brad were always positive. He was a driving force in the Patriot Guard and when he entered a room there was an accompanying feeling of confidence and a sense of power. Everytime we spoke he was uplifting and reassuring. My life has been made richer by knowing Brad and he will be sorely missed. My heart goes out to the ANC team. This has struck a serious blow but I am confident, that the ANC team has the strenghth and depth in leadership to get beyond this. But now we all morn the passing of this charismatic leader and brother. My deepest condolences to Nan's friends and family, also. Another Patriot called to God's army.

Rest In Peace

HIGH FLIGHT
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air ....
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

I never had the honor of meeting or riding with Brad but of all the things I read, one things stands out.  RC at Arlington.  I don't think I could do it.  Many I know couldn't.  I've worked the Moving Wall and have met veteran's who can't make the trip because they can't face the Wall and the can't look at the final restiiing place of a friend or relative in Arlington.

Brad did it on a regular basis.

God Bless you Brother.  Save me a spot in the Big Flag line that, unfotunately, has gotten too long lately...

To Brad's Family and Friends I offer my deepest and heartfelt condolences on your loss.  Although I never had the pleasure of meeting Brad, as a member of the PGR he was our Brother too.  When we lose a member of the PGR we lose we also lose a close family member.  Our hearts aches and we feel the lose as well.

Brad, thank you for all you have done.  It is time for you to stand down and now be served by the organization that you loved and dedicated yourself to.

It is clear to me that Brad has shared a precious gift with us that life is short and we must make the best out of the time we have.  Because all we have is today!

While we have lost what has been a great leader in the PGR... God has gained an angel for his armies.

May all who knew Brad find strength knowing that the mission continues - in his honor.
Our prayers are with Brad's family, friends, and everyone effected by the untimely loss of a good man.

Rest in peace Brad. You have lived your life to the fullest, and served a noble purpose while here.
Now... find peace and eternal love in the company of God above as surely he has said to you...

"Job well done my good and faithful servant."

With sympathy,

My condolences to the families and friends of Brad and Nan.

Having been on missions in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and one at Arlington, I may have met Brad and Nan. But I did remember Brad's name from the Wreaths Across America video done by ABC, "Many Voices-One Mission." Brad is interviewed about 4 minutes into the piece. If you never met Brad, you can hear from the man himself why he did the missions, at Wreaths Across America .

Again, I'm saddened to hear this news.

Rebecca and I are heartbroken over the tragic and untimely loss of Brad and Nan. We have ridden in several Arlington missions RCd by Brad and were always impressed with his sincere desire to ensure each and every one of them were conducted with reverence, pride and a deep respect for the heroes being laid to rest and their families. Brad and Nan, we will miss you but will never forget your kindness, friendliness and deep respect for our country's military men and women. God bless each of you and may he welcome you into his kingdom to ride alongside those heroes who you helped send on their way to heaven. Thank you.

To Brad and Nan's next of kin: It was an honor to know and ride with both of these true American patriots. We pray your pain will turn to memories of happier times shared with Brad and Nan as time goes on. God bless you.

My heart is heavy at the loss of another "brother". While I did not know Brad, I know how his heart was there for our fallen warriors. His loss is tragic and as I read the words posted on this site this morning, I had tears streaming down my face. Tears for one that I did not know. But isn't that the heart of PGR?

I know that it is early, but if there are any plans to have a relay like we did last month for Jim Sheffer back in August. I am standing by to make the ride on the Virginia side, perhaps even going all the way to Myrtle Beach.

Rest in peace, Brad

Announced last night is a ride in honor of Brad and his friend Nan. The Vienna Moose had already been planning a Poker Run for Juvenile Diabetes set for 13 October. They have announce that that run will be now publicized in honor of Brad and Nan and that all proceeds will be donated in their name to the charity. The outpouring on here has surely been inspiring. I would LOVE to see ALL of you at this run.

Brad was the ride captain for the first mission my wife and I attended at ANC. We had the distinct privilege and honor to ride on several missions with Brad, and each time he was amazing. His love and respect for both the troops and this great country was awe inspiring. This country, truthfully the world, has lost a great human being. Brad, you will be sorely missed and most definitely never forgotten. To both Brad and Nan's family, please accept our deepest condolences. May both of you rest in peace.

My brother you will be missed more than you can ever imagine. I rode with Brad many times and will not forget how he managed to pull together the last leg of the Wreaths Across America Mission. Brad And Nancy always had a smile and a good word for everyone, I was so looking forward to riding with him again on the Wreaths mission, we had some fun last year putting the newest Arlington Ride Captain up for the press to interview. we didn't abandon him we stood beside him and didn't need to as he said all the right things. There will be an empty spot inside all of us that knew Brad and Nancy , but we can be assured that he was welcomed with the trumpet as he entered into heaven to join our lord Jesus Christ. I will pray for the family , and friends left behind because we are the ones who suffer as our brother and sister are with our LORD GOD. The Bible says absent from the body present with the LORD, of this I am confident. Rest now my brother your mission is complete.

Brad stood next to me three weeks ago at ANC as a our mission commander. Some men just lead with a quiet confidence that makes people want to follow them. Brad was such a man. He had gravitas. I regret that I did not get to know him better. Rest in peace, Ranger.

Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Brad D. Winchester, Army Veteran & PGR member and companion Nancy Truitt. May God help you though this difficult time and sorrow. We have lost another one America's Heroes and his companion Nancy Truitt. They will never be forgotten.

Rest Safely and Securely in God's Loving Arms, Brad and Nancy.

Going home, going home,
I'm just going home.
Quiet-like, slip away-
I'll be going home.
It's not far, just close by;
Jesus is the Door;
Work all done, laid aside,
Fear and grief no more.
Friends are there, waiting now.
He is waiting, too.
See His smile! See His hand!
He will lead me through.

Morning Star lights the way;
Restless dream all done;
Shadows gone, break of day,
Life has just begun.
Every tear wiped away,
Pain and sickness gone;
Wide awake there with Him!
Peace goes on and on!
Going home, going home,
I'll be going home.
See the Light! See the Sun!
I'm just going home.

Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you: 1. Jesus Christ. 2. The American G.I. One died for your soul, the other for your Freedom.

These two great American Patriots will be welcomed in heaven by those that have gone before.
Your service to our fallen soldiers and their families was and will always be appreciated by scores of patriotic Americans and
defenders of freedom everywhere. You are perfect examples of what it means to be a great American.
God bless

I have not had the honor to ride an ANC mission. Brad and Nancy you are truly missed. ANC is one of, if not, THE toughest districts to Captian yet Brad always pulled it off like there was nothing to it. Always honoring our country and mission unwavered.
We have two more Angels to guide us on our way now.

Guardian angel up above
Look down on me with all your love
Watch over me both day and night
And guide me with your precious light

Angels are ever all around us
And with His love they do surround us.
When my heart is sore in need
The angels come, my soul to feed.
They come to me from up above
and sing in whispers of "His" love.
When in my heart I feel a tug
I know that it's an Angel's hug.

Stand down, you have your final orders...

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal.
Love leaves a memory no one can steal.
