Mr. Keene was a retiree of the United States Air Force with over 30 years of service and was in the Army at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.  He is credited with shooting down the first enemy jet aircraft in combat (from his P-51) and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross among other awards.  He was a surveyor/engineer after his career in the military.  Other than a small funeral home visitation, which has already been held, the service at DFW National Cemetery will be the only service.  His ashes will be buried at the same time as those of his wife, who passed away earlier this year.

 

The cemetery would not release which shelter the service is scheduled for so please either check the information board outside at the visitor center when you arrive or just look for the other bikes in the shelter area.  Big flag bikes please come initially to the staging area for briefing and then you will go to the visitor center to escort the family to the shelter.  Others will stay to help with the flags.  We will use the flags we have in storage at the cemetery for this service.  We will have a water truck present.

 

Mountain Creek Parkway is now open from I-20 to the cemetery but the road is rough and construction is ongoing as it nears Keist.  The best route is likely still to be Spur 408 to Keist to Mountain Creek and then to the cemetery.

 

Also please note that other services may be in progress as we are entering or leaving the area so please keep bike pipe/radio/etc., noise to a minimum.  Thanks.

 

Weather:  Clear with a high of 83 degrees.  As always, one of the keys to proper hydration is to start hydrating early.  The day prior to the mission is not too soon to start.  It is, in fact, recommended by the experts.

Iron Horses if you can, cages are always welcome and appreciated. 

Please remember that our mission is to stand tall, silent, and with honor and respect for this veteran and his family.
