Riders,

Below is the final staging information for this Sunday's Memorial Service for WWII Veteran Joseph Ellis.

 CHATFIELD, MN - WWII VETERAN - MR. JOSEPH WILLIAM ELLIS - 14 SEP 08

We have been invited to attend the funeral of WWII Veteran Joseph William Ellis on Sunday, September 14 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Chatfield, MN.  Mr. Ellis served in the 3rd Armored Infantry Division during World War II and drove a half-track in Europe. A very fond memory from his family was his attendance at the WW II Memorial Dedication in St. Paul in the summer of 2007. He had his picture taken standing next to a half-track similar to the one he drove in the European Theatre. This was said to be a very proud and gracious day for Mr. Ellis. I have included a copy of that picture per the families request. Mr. Ellis was also a member of the American Legion and VFW, as well as the State and National 3rd Armored Division Association.

Here us a link to Mr. Ellis's Obituary:

 Staging Update
We will be staging in the back of the Chatfield Elementary School on the corner of Twiford and 4th St SW. When arriving on Hwy 52, turn West on 4th Street, travel 1/2 block and turn South into the Lot behind the school. If the gate to this area is locked, the back-up staging will be on the West side of Hwy 52 between 3rd and 4th Street SW. This will be along side of the City Park immediately south of the Traffic Light. If possible, please arrive shortly before 11:00 am to avoid the 11:00 am church dismissal and subsequent traffic.

Staging is as follows:

11:00 am - Staging Opens.
11:20 am - Mission Briefing
11:30 am - Set Flagline
11:45 am - Family arrival
1:00 pm - Memorial Service to begin, stand-down.

We are awaiting final word from the family on whether we will hold a flag-line after the Memorial Service or head to the cemetery for the Internment. Please stand by for more details.

Please bring your 3x5 American Flag, dress according to the weather, and remember to bring water as we need to be self-sufficient.

Chatfield is in the Rochester Sector, approximately 20 minutes SE of Rochester on Hwy 52. We rode through Chatfield near the end of the Remembrance Ride on August 23rd.

Rest Safely and Securely in God's Loving Arms, Joseph.

Going home, going home,
I'm just going home.
Quiet-like, slip away-
I'll be going home.
It's not far, just close by;
Jesus is the Door;
Work all done, laid aside,
Fear and grief no more.
Friends are there, waiting now.
He is waiting, too.
See His smile! See His hand!
He will lead me through.

Morning Star lights the way;
Restless dream all done;
Shadows gone, break of day,
Life has just begun.
Every tear wiped away,
Pain and sickness gone;
Wide awake there with Him!
Peace goes on and on!
Going home, going home,
I'll be going home.
See the Light! See the Sun!
I'm just going home.

Kelly and family, as you all gather to celebrate the life of your Grandfather this weekend, we will be there to honor his service to this great nation. Patton said, "It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God that such men lived." We are forever grateful for the sacrifice that he and many others made so many years ago. They left not knowing how long it might be before they would return. They left knowing only that they had a job to do, a monumental task that they were prepared and dedicated to perform.

Others should know that your Grandfather was part of Patton's famed 3rd Armored Division. Reduced to cold, statistical figures, the feats of the Third Army were astonishing. The Army liberated or captured 81,522 square miles of territory. An estimated 12,000 cities, towns, and communities were liberated or captured, including 27 cities of more than 50,000 in population.

Third Army captured 765,483 prisoners of war. 515,205 of the enemy surrendered during the last week of the war to make a total of 1,280,688 POW's processed.

The enemy lost an estimated 1,280,688 captured, 144,500 killed, and 386,200 wounded, adding up to 1,811,388. By comparison, the Third Army suffered 16,596 killed, 96,241 wounded, and 26,809 missing in action for a total of 139,646 casualties.

The decorations awarded to soldiers of the Third Army were:
Medal of Honor 19
Distinguished Service Medal 44
Distinguished Service Cross 291
Legion of Merit 159
Silver Star 4,990
Soldier's Medal 247
Bronze Star 29,090

Perhaps more than any other group of soldiers in the European Theater, the soldiers of the Third Army deserved the praise of the Supreme Allied Commander when he said, "Working and fighting together in a single indestructible partnership, you have achieved perfection in unification of air, ground, and naval power that will stand as a model in our time."

I am so glad that he had the chance to participate in the dedication of the WWII memorial in St. Paul last June and was so happy when you told me that for months afterward, it was still something that he talked about.

So, celebrate his life, the life of a true American hero as he is now in the company of his leader and many other heros who have gone before him. We will be there to honor his service as well. Thank you for inviting us to be there.

I'll see you on Sunday.
