ITINERARY/STAGING INFORMATION

Staging for this mission will be at the Elkins City Park on Sycamore St., Elkins, WV (http://tinyurl.com/3wskkq), across from Davis & Elkins College.

   Staging time: 0900

   Briefing: 0945

KSU: 1000 - This time could vary slightly, one way or the other, depending on the departure of the GOME from the campus of D&E.

Escort out of town will be provided by Elkins PD.

At the present time, we will be escorting a 60 passenger bus with these Wounded/Disabled Veterans and their families on board.

Procession will proceed West on Rt 33 to I-79N to I-68E. Exact route of travel into Milan Puskar Stadium is not yet finalized but will be announced at the briefing.

Upon arrival at the Stadium, the procession will be met by a film crew from WBOY-12 in Clarksburg, WV, who desires to film their arrival.  Please remember to bring your 3x5 flag so we may establish a line as these Veterans are exiting the bus.

For EVERYONE planning to participate in this most honorable escort, please note that, at the present time, we have NOT been able to secure LEO escort into the Stadium as all available troopers will be handling traffic and security in and around the Morgantown area.  Traffic will be EXTREMELY heavy and, at times, VERY slow moving from the Fairmont, WV area into the Stadium.  SAFETY OF ALL IS OUR UTMOST CONCERN!

Please continue to monitor this thread for any updates.
Terry (Chaps) Powell, WV RC

Ride safe PGR escort, you are escorting heros and precious cargo.

I would like to thank those involved with the “Gathering of Mountain Eagles”. It’s nice to see people do care about OUR combat wounded.

I am especially excited that such an organization exists in my “adopted” state of West Virginia.

Enjoy your time and outing together, you more than deserve it, you have earned it.

Dennis....yes, this is a rain or shine event.  Currently the forecast is calling for partly cloudy skies with a 30-40% chance of scattered showers.

If you plan to attend, you might drop Gary an e-mail at stroker_ironhead@yahoo.com to see about meeting up with those folks in the Martinsburg, WV area.  Believe they plan to depart there around 0500 Saturday morning, in case you'd like to ride along with them.

Joe

Joe:
Thanks for the update and info. Actually I'm heading up today. I have a niece attending WV Wesleyann in Buckhannon. I'm going to take her to dinner tonight. (Let's see, college kid, free meal, she's gonna clean my clock.) I got myself a room at the Comfort Inn in Weston about 40 min from Elkins. That way I don't have to leave at 0400 and I can get my beauty rest. Lord knows I can use all I can get for this old ugly mug.

See ya at the ride! Let's all keep the wheel side down...

Dennis

The day started off blistery and wet, and continued to look as if we might of needed boats instead of Bikes. I want to give thanks to those in attendance; the list is as follows. Sam & Jackie Sapiro, Gary Gaskins, Dennis Ohler, Kelly Turner, Art Thomm, Eric Householder, Doug Baker, Ron Jones, John Schwartz, Debra Cottrill, Bill Turner, Joe Cumblidge and myself. A Special thanks to the Elkins City Police dept and the Mayors Office for the Escort, and the West Virginia State Police, along with the Channel 12 news team for doing the Video on the Vets. Also Thanks needs to go out to Sen Rockefeller's office for there assistance in getting the Vets recognized and onto the Field, and last but never least Woody and those fine outstanding Americans who served their country and gave willingly what was asked of them.

Sometimes during the subtleness of our lives we are placed in the company of greatness, yesterday was one of those times. To see the look of appreciation on the faces of those young Vets,to see the determination of MR.Ron Fry and his spirit and pride for who he is and what he has done to serve this country it is humbling to say the least. To be able to gave from our hearts back to those who gave so much for each one of us it is a day I shall never forget. Each one of us gave what ever we had in many different ways to give and it is with pride and honor I call myself a member of this group. God Bless our Country our Soliders our Veterens and The Patriot Guard Riders.

The escort mission went off very well 11 Harley's and their riders John in our support truck a 22 passenger Bus and Van, before leaving the park channel 12 news arrived and taped several interviews with the vets witch aired on the local news at 11 last night to be able to give them an opportunity to tell a little about themselves was absolutely awesome. To show their appreciation, Woody and three of our Veterans presented Deb, Joe, and myself each with the Gathering of Mountain Eagles Challenge Coins, which was a very touching sentiment. We proceeded out of the park with escort to Rt 33. One thing we were able to do was to give rides to several veteran's who some had never been on a Harley before it was a very special occasion for us all.We proceeded across Rt 33 to Interstate 79 taking a small break at the Sheetz station before heading North while in the parking lot we were approached by an officer of the West Virginia State Police he talked with us and wished us good wishes he also alerted other officers to our north of our travel to Morgantown. As we were getting ready to head north the sun broke out and began to light the way for these brave young souls it was a beautiful sight. We traveled uneventfully to the weigh station were we again took a break waiting for our trooper escort while waiting we were given the opportunity for a photo shoot with the whole group. After picking up our escort we traveled to the coliseum where we presented a flag line for our brave young men and women, I am not sure who was touched the most them or us but I left with a feeling of fulfillment and pride that will never leave my memory.

On a personal note, I will treasure the opportunity I had to walk among such a fine group of proud American Heros with the Gathering of Mountain Eagles.

Good morning.

I would like to thank Terry Dwayne Powell, Sr. and everyone involved with the “Gathering of Mountain Eagles”. There is nothing better than to show support and respect for those who have gone into harms way for this great country of our’s.

I would also like to thank the Elkins Police Department as well as the West Virginia State Police for their participation in escorting the ride. I spent 27 years in law enforcement in Florida and of that time, five years were spent as a “motorman”. During my years I never escorted “one” returning veteran. Some of the time was when veterans were not respected, coming out of Vietnam, etc.

Like I always say “it will never happen again”.

It’s things like this make me proud to be an American.

God Bless you, the troops and this great country of our’s.

I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the WV PGR. It was an honor to ride with you on this mission. I thank each of you from the bottom of my heart for allowing this ole Balmer (Baltimore) boy to tag along.

I felt the special pride placing one of those fine young vets on my bike for a portion of the trip. I don't know what I found more enjoyable, his elation at his first ever ride on a bike or my sense of honor that he elected to ride with me. Call me selfish, but it was a special time for me. At the weigh station, a PGR member and I talked another vet into giving it a try for their first time. Unfortunately, circumstances precluded that from happening on the final leg.

We didn't have tix for the game so I'll never know how the day turned out for the vets but after my short time with these young people I hope it was a day they'll remember for half as long as I will. As I rode homeward through the mountains, I couldn't stop thinking about those young men and women, and thier individual courage. What a fine group of young Americans they are. May God bless them all.
