Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial Mission

13 September 2008

Sunbury, OH

Staging Area:

Sunbury Community Library

44 Burrer Drive

Sunbury, OH  43074

13 September 2008 @ 1300hrs (1:00PM)

On 13 September 2008 the Gold Star Families will be attending a Luncheon and Memorial Service for their loved ones at the Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial. We have been invited to stand guard during this event.

The event will last until about 1900hrs (7:00PM). We will form a secure tunnel of flags for the families to walk from the church to the Memorial site. There will be families from all over the state. I would like to see a large turn out for this mission. I for one am looking forward to seeing the families again and letting them know we have not forgotten their loved ones or them.

Please plan on attending and be on time. Make sure you dress for the weather conditions and bring your 3 x 5 American Flags.

Bob Woods is the assigned Ride Captain for this Memorial Mission. Please follow his instructions.

I am hoping to get to this memorial if I can get my bike fixed in time.   I do not get alot of time to check the comp so if someone would be kind enough to let me know when an event is happening by calling my cell I would really appreciate it.   I am active in the Coast Guard so the more time ahead of a ride the better so if I need to put in for leave I can.   Thanks to all of you who started this.

What Heroes Gave

Each donned their uniform to be
Defenders of our liberty

Their mission sure, their spirits bright
Guard freedom’s home, be brave to fight

One final day each faced their call
Each gave their best enduring all

We’ll never know what they went through
But know they loved this country true

Deep down inside we should all feel
What heroes gave, their cost so real

We must stay thankful, grateful of
The gift of freedom through their love

Their loved ones bore the gravest pain
What we can’t know, some now sustain

To God I pray their pain will cease
And each will find long-lasting peace

Remember this from year to year
What heroes gave – shan’t disappear

We’ll never let their special day
Their time for honor slip away

These brave fought for a nation free
If not for them, where would we be?

I apologize for not making this mission. We did make every effort, but my bike has been giving me trouble, and I ended up broke down on the side of 23. We did get the bike home, but so wanted to make this mission. Be sure that we were with you all in spirit and are forever grateful for the sacrifices of the Gold Star families/ parents and their children.

Home safe last night at 2200.

This mission cut to the core of what we are, why we do it, and who we do it for. I am still numb.

To the Gold Star families my deepest thanks and gratitude. That you invite the PGR to share in this deeply personal and solemn occasion tells us that we are doing the right thing and for the right reasons. Many of you try to thank us, and that humbles me beyond words. We are there to support you and let you know that America cares and America weeps with you. We thank you for the privilege to honor you and our fallen heroes. God bless you all.

To Bob Woods, thank you sir for making this happen. You represent and lead in the finest traditions of the PGR. Many thanks also to the RC's for coordinating Bob's plan and making it happen. Due to our numbers and locations Bob couldn't be everywhere at once. You folks kept things happening. And thanks to Rodney for bringing the flags. They made our statement.

To my brothers and sisters who attended yesterday, it was an honor to stand with you. Some of you came from out of state and we were honored that you joined us. Getting together and seeing old friends, and meeting new ones is indeed a double-edged sword. I spent time with true American patriots, getting together to do the right thing. In our hearts we are saddened to be given this opportunity. I knew before heading down there that there was nothing else more important that I could do anywhere this weekend. I can say now that my gut instinct was correct. Mission accomplished.

I had never been to Sunbury before. This memorial is awesome. I didn't get to walk the memorial until after the proceedings ended. The names jumped out at me from the markers. Many (too many) brought back memories of these missions, and things I had learned about these heroes. I reminded myself that I must never let them be forgotten, and to continue to remind others the true cost of being an American.

What a moving day in honor of the fallen and their families. It was an honor to serve in what seems on the surface a small way but to the families it can be huge. Terry and I were sent to block the media who had set up right in front of the sign "No Media" next to the tent. He was in the families faces. While CJ was quietly explaining to the complaining camera man, a gold star Dad standing next to me kept looking over his shoulder. I patted him on the shoulder and whispered to him that we would take care of it and he replied, "I know, I'm Patriot Guard, too." I told him, "Not today. Today we take care of you." He smiled a little and nodded. The camera came down in short order, the ceremony went on without intrusion. Mission accomplished. Barbara
