Most of us learned of the pending arrival of our Hero, Sgt. Jennifer Gomez in the mid to late morning on the day of her arrival. So with less than 12 hours notice, we were extremely happy to have nine PGR riders and a chase car show up at staging. The ride to Oakland International Airport went without a hitch and we parked in the usual, exclusive location to be warmly greeted by an Alameda County Sheriff's Office motor officer. The terminal was very crowded and as we casually strode into the terminal, a man was overheard to comment, "who are these characters?"
Sgt. Gomez's flight arrived early, so we quickly formed a single-file flag line to the flank of the security exit. The area between the crowd cleared as Spike loudly called the PGR to attention and ordered us to present arms. A delightedly surprised soldier then staggered the length of our line and into the outstretched arms of her father. Over 150 passengers joined the celebration, applauding long a loud as the man got the answer to his question.
Handshakes, hugs and hearty greetings exchanged, we saddled up for the 26 mile welcome home escort to Pleasanton. There, 200+ family, friends, and neighbors awaited our Hero. Representatives of the local American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Mayor presented Sgt. Gomez with certificates of appreciation and made formal welcomes.
Thank you, Sgt. Gomez, for your service to our country. You have made this world a better place through your efforts. May God bless and protect you and your loved ones.
Respectfully submitted, Tom Hoynes, RC

THE FOLLOWING EMAIL DESCRIBES THE WELCOME HOME IN THE GOMEZ'S NEIGHBORHOOD AND THAT OF A MARINE THIS SAME WEEKEND. THE EMAIL IS FROM PAT, WITH THE PLEASANTON MILITARY FAMILIES (PMF). ***************************************************************************** For all you wonderful patriots....
This has been some weekend! I just need to say my own thank you to all of you. We celebrated two homecomings this weekend....and whether we had four days or eight hours to put it together, we did it!! And even more amazing we had representatives of so many of our great groups that support and celebrate our brave men and women in the military AND realize the importance of their mission in keeping our country safe now and for the future. Bryan Welden of the Lafayette Flag Brigade took the lead for homecoming of USMC LCpl Aaron McCrea of Livermore. Bryan did an excellent job of organizing. I would estimate over 150 folks showed up, maybe more. Not only neighbors and friends and old wrestling buddies but representatives of the VFW, the Marine Corp League, the American Legion, Operation SAM, Blue Star Moms, Vincent,a representative of Congressman McNerney's office, the local Boy Scouts selling lemonade, Pleasanton Military Families AND Aaron was escorted in from Vasco Road to his home by 34 Patriot Guard Riders!!! After a two hour street party waiting for our guest of honor to arrive IN UNIFORM (my oh my!), the thundering of the bikes in the distance signaling his arrival was just toooo coooool. Aaron was truly surprised. The frosting on the cake, (and yes, we ate cake!) after all the congratulations and welcome homes were done, was listening to LCpl Aaron's mom, JoAnn, play guitar and sing a song she wrote when her son joined the corp. Her beautiful voice and lyrics touched the hearts of every proud parent and veteran there and a few tears fell. It was a great evening. I got home around 11pm, to bed by 12 and by 8:20 am, slurping the first cup of hot coffee, I find I have a message waiting from Chris Miller saying "Jennifer Gomez will be home TODAY. Call me." Well, I didn't burn my tongue or choke, thank God....because there was work to do! Due to previous plans I had for the morning, we didn't get to any serious work on this homecoming until after 11am, which makes it all the more amazing. Chris got in touch with Spike, of the Patriot Guard (this guy is a hoot, his name fits but he's always saying "Go Navy!".....) and I got busy emailing and calling folks with the help of Sherry Wiggins...and the rest, as they say, is NOW history. The Lafayette Flag Brigade couldn't be there so that meant no 9 x 12 foot flag with spot lights in the front yard...Doug Miller was out of town, so I had no idea where our big "Welcome Home" banner was... So my girl, Sherry, was off to find a welcome home banner at a party supply store and I filled my car with all the stuff we use for parades with a plan to meet at the Gomez house at 7:30pm to decorate with ideas of a 8:30-8:45 pm arrival. We had asked Azi and Helene to chat it up with the neighbors to invite them to the homecoming, please don't call the cops when the loud bikes start invading your neighborhood, you know, the usual..... Azi and John also found time to hang flag bunting over the garage and put some flags on the lawn. A great start. We pull up to the house to start decorating and Chris (he and Marty went to the airport) calls to say the "plane landed 10 minutes ago!" (Chris is turning my hair grey this weekend, I'm going to have to book a root touch up with my daughter...) So we got busy and with the help of Sherry and Al Wiggens, Shauna Winters, Doug and Helen Christison and did an awesome job of decorating. That Al is amazing....he had a solution to every glitch. He kept pulling out things like tape, bungie cords, tools, a razor knife (maybe he had a crime planned for after the homecoming....)and then a six foot ladder....now I thought he was getting all this from their Saturn....but when the ladder showed up, I started thinking maybe his truck was nearby...I never asked. We had a fantastic turnout for Sgt Jennifer Gomez!! Another great evening with neighbors (who didn't call the cops!), the VFW, representatives of Operation SAM, Blue Star Moms, Vice Mayor Thorne and his wife, Mayor Hosterman, Nicole from Congressman McNerney's office, and the frosting on the cake (and yes, there was cake again...funny story goes with that...) was the Patriot Guard escorting Sgt. Jennifer Gomez to her home. She was suprised and amazed too. What fun! Street party #2 for the weekend was in full swing . It was pure joy to meet this wonderful girl and her amazing smile....someone who has been in all our hearts for many months now. Pictures for both homecomings will be forwarded for you to view from a website. We had several photographers there so I'll be anxious to see the different angles and perspectives. I just want to say thank you once again to all of you of PMF, and all the different support groups in this area, for making these homecomings so memorable, not just for the returning soldier, sailor, airman or marine, but also for the parents and the community. Of all the things we do ....the friendship, support, meetings, fundraisers, communication, care packages....the homecomings are what we live for, what we wait for....they are the best!!! Love you all, Pat Frizzell ps- please forward to anyone/any group I missed with my apologies...I was just too excited. |
