CWO3 Terry Hart, US Army Reserve As former neighbor and co-conspirator in this adventure I'm honored to be part of Terry's Escort Riders to The SR Vets Building. Welcome home Terry, we are all proud of you! BTW -- for those who do not know, Terry is the mother of two teen boys, her eldest an Eagle Scout, and Terry herself is an Asst Scout Master and will be returning from a 50-miler just in time for this Welcome Home Celebration co-hosted by The American Legion. All just two weeks after returning to cheering crowds and a parade near the Los Alamitos Army Reserve Base. Additionally, Terry was awarded the Bronze Star for duties in the Middle East overseeing her company, or maybe for actions we will find out about Sunday...

Ride Captain Lynn Tross asked me to write a personal Ride Report for the Welcome Home for CWO3 Terry Hart. Terry is a former neighbor and I've been in communication with her husband Ray about this homecoming since I heard she was in Afghanistan, and later relocated to Iraq. First and foremost, the PGR turnout was beyond my wildest expectations. Once again Sonoma County "dun good" helped greatly by riders from Santa Cruz, the East Bay, Lake, Napa and Marin Counties. Personal memo that I told Ray Thursday we might have 6 or 7 bikes and maybe 10 people... I was just a little off. The gathering was at the Chevron on Hopper in North Santa Rosa, and when I rode in at 12noon there were already half dozen or more there, with others rolling in all the time. Lynn came in with her Super Support Hummer and it was decided to hand the RC duties off to Tom Hoynes as we needed to coordinate all the riders and vehicles onto and down Hwy 101 with our experienced riders working to slow oncoming traffic. Our honoree arrived, driven by her 19-year old son just after 1:00pm, I greeted them and said something like "We've organized a little escort to make sure you get to your Welcome Home at the Vets Building" Terry and her boys were amazed by the lineup of bikes adorned with flags all in her honor. We rolled out, got onto the highway, made our way (slowly) down Hwy 101 to Hwy 12, exited and passed the Fair Grounds with the Vets Building on the opposite side of the Hwy, the roadway is like a tunnel so the Thunder of the Bikes more than announced our arrival to the 60 gathered outside the Vets waiting. We turned in and made an impressive line in the parking lot which had a classic auto swap meet going on, and plenty of the swappers came over to inspect the bikes. After the initial shock diminished (shock of the whole day for Terry and shock of the number of Riders for those gathered... or maybe it was the shock when her husband Ray giving her a dozen roses as she arrived...) we went inside the dining hall to a impressive display of medals, including her recent Bronze Star, other awards, photos, memorabilia and a great catered BBQ of chicken, salad, pasta, garlic bread and Welcome Home Cake! Prior to eating, Terry's husband spoke a few words of encouragement, I presented Terry with a folder of the PGR postings (which will be added to with photos and more well wishes) and the Sonoma American Legion Post presented her with a certificate of appreciation. Ray also gave her a special bracelet, a pair of handcuffs with a 6 ft link so she couldn't get too far away any time soon. The event was attended by family, friends, members of Terry's scout troop, Vets, PGR members and all four of her & Rays boys together for the first time in a while. Many of our PGR riders also attended other Welcome Homes this weekend, as it was a joyous busy weekend. A wonderful change from the usual missions we are called on to attend. Thank You all who attended and offered well wishes, special thanks to Lynn and Tom, to Woody, Spike, Bootson, the Pit Crew and the others for running interference for our procession. To the Sonoma Post of the American Legion, Gary Magnani Post Commander and Bob Kinsey PGR and Post Member for helping secure the hall, and without question, Thank You Chief Warrant Officer 3 Terry Hart for everything you have done for US. It was Our Honor to be there For You!
Respectfully Mitch Laing Sonoma (group photo by Erik Castro/Santa Rosa)

On Sunday afternoon we had the honor of gathering together to welcome home one of our local heroes, CWO3 Terry Hart. She is safely home with her family after a 15 month deployment where she traveled to 13 countries - including Iraq and Afghanistan. CWO3 Hart was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious Service during her recent deployment. Inside the Veteran’s Memorial Building there were many tables displaying pictures and mementos of Terry’s 25+ year career with the United States Army, and Army Reserves. Over the years CWO3 Hart has been awarded numerous medals including the Army Achievement Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal – there were many other medals, but please forgive me, as I don’t know the names. It’s a little hard to believe that this sweet, soft-spoken Mom was also a Drill Sergeant!
PGR and friends – thank you for being there to Welcome Home this Hero! We had close to 40 motorcycles, and approximately 50+ riders. We had some riders who rode all the way from Santa Cruz to join us – thank you! Many of the bikes were flying large American flags, which made for a beautiful sight while escorting CWO3 Hart and her family down the freeway. Thanks to Mitch and Greg/Pit Crew MC for leading the escort and a special thank you to all our road guards: Spike (Go Navy!), Sloopdog, Tom, Woody and Bootson – you guys did an amazing job of keeping us safe. And thank you to all the riders who joined us for the first time! Thank you to Tom for stepping up and doing the ride briefing on my behalf, and thank you to Mitch for doing all the work to put together the PGR escort.
It was wonderful to see Terry’s family and friends as well as the Boy Scouts (from a number of troops) at the Veteran’s Memorial who were there to welcome home their Assistant Scout Master. Thank you to Bob and the Sonoma American Legion Post for their participation, and very special thanks to all the folks who pulled together to make this homecoming so special. (Sincere apologies if there is any one or group that I failed to mention.)
And finally, THANK YOU CWO3 TERRY HART for all that you have done all these years to help others and to protect our freedom here at home. THANK YOU to RAY, Terry’s husband and to her sons RAY, JASON (all the way from Redding), DAVID and MATTHEW. Your Mom is a true Hero!

This was mailed to me today & thought I would share with everyone. I don't even know where to begin thanking the Patriot Guard Riders and will not be able to fully thank them properly. I am the CW3 Terry Hart that you all so warmly welcomed home and escorted to my surprise Homecoming Party with my family and friends. As most of you know the party was not a surprise to me nor was the time and location due to me scheduling a conflicting backpacking, camping trip to Yosemite with my 2 sons, David and Matthew which required some rescheduling. Oh but everything else sure was a surprise.
You guys and gals were an amazing sight as we pulled into the parking lot of the gas station where we were to meet and further drive/ride to the Veterans Bldg. The professionalism and the skill in which you organized, directed traffic around us, and escorted me to the Vets Bldg was awe inspiring. What was even more amazing is that all but 1 of you did all of this for a complete stranger. I felt undeserving of all of the attention which was overwhelming, but no less appreciated.
Soldiers do not go to war for the awards, recognition, or appreciation but it sure does help knowing that there are people like all of you here at home who appreciate us and are honored to welcome us home. I consistantly prayed for my family and friends back home, the protection of all of the troops overseas, and that the job that I was doing would somehow have a positive affect on the troops in the middle of the firefights. I now add you wonderful folks in my prayers that you always ride safely while you are sacrificing your time to honor us.
If your mission was to welcome me, escort me, and honor me, I would say that you all exceeded expectations and overwhelmingly accomplished your mission. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for each of you riding in the mission and for all who have written messages here to express your welcome and gratitude; for each of you I am grateful.
I especially thank my husband Ray, my sons Raymond, Jason, David, and Matthew, and my daughter-in-law Jen for loving me so much from a distance and Mitch Laing who went out of his way to initiate this welcome for a neighbor that he hadn't seen for close to 16 years. Whoda thunk it?
Special mention for my Uncle SGT Alan Coleman, MIA, Korean War; a fellow soldier SGT Joseph Nurre, KIA, Iraq; and a fellow soldier SFC Carlos Jojola killed 3 months upon returning from Iraq.
If there is anything that I can do for any of you (except ride a motorcyle, kinda uncoordinated in that area), please do not hesitate to call on me.
Gratefully,
CW3 Terry Hart |
