WELCOME HOME

130TH  MP COMPANY

JULY 14 2008

ESCORT:  Smyrna, TN to Memphis TN.  We will be leaving at Noon from the base in Smyrna off Sam Ridely Parkway.  Enter the Base, the CO has the Security expecting us to ride in.

STAGING:   At the Guard Shack, at 11:00, KSU 11:30.

Ride Captain for Middle TN:  Randy Hall, aka Sportypig, rchall@comcast.net (615) 400-5389

Fuel stops are in the agenda for the trip, it's approx. 200 miles from Smyrna to the Memphis base.

Staging for West TN Members:

We can stage at the Shell station at 25.

Since I am unsure of an exact time, and it's only at 200 mile trip, so plan on being at the staging area by 1400. The busses could conceivibly be here by 3pm, so for those making this escort, please be there by 2:30pm.

We will be escorting them to near Memphis International Airport, and traffic on the south leg of I240 that time of day might be a bit unpleasant. Hopefully we can get MPD to escort.

Directions to Smyrna Staging area:

I-24 to Exit 66 Sam Ridley Parkway W (traveling East) Cross US highway 41, then left on Fitzhugh Blvd. I believe it is the 2nd left after you cross Highway 41. Arrive with a FULL tank, we are going to make this run with only 1 fuel stop. No worries, I have probably the most limited distance between fuel stops, so everyone should be fine.

Welcome Home 130th. Mission Accomplished! We'll finally get ya back to Memphis this afternoon.

15 Jul 2008 11:17 AM Alert
Since there's no after mission report here let me add my portion of that.

I drove out of Jackson. At the rest stop west of town, I noticed 2 bikes. One trike and another with a furled US flag. I immediatley recognized that as a PGR memebr or two. I drove west, turned around at the next exit and came back. It was Harley Trike and Miss scarlett out of Dresden. Just like I suspected from the highway!

I tried to convince them to run with me to exit 25 but they wanted to catch the bus on the highway from there. After 30 minutes, I said "see ya at the other end" and left.

As I pulled into the staging area I was met by over 30 bikes (does any one work in TN during the summer???). I was reunited briefly with Fred Stephens and spoke with a few people I knew from previous missions. Expecting to just ride along, I was quickly tossed into a semi leader role by Whiz Bang. I ended up giving the ride brief, and we began to position bikes in anticipation of the bus arrival.

The MP unit stayed on board, the driver ran for a rest room stop and then we were on our way. With in a half mile of the exit, I noticed a rider broke down on the side of the road. Sadly, it was our very own dear pig. Yes folks the pig was out of the barn and out of strength to conntinue. Seems sporty lost electrical.

I pulled over to stay with him, as the last of the police escorts rolled by him. Sure that we would be up and running in a few minutes, I waited. The wait turned into 3 hours as he tried to explain to "company name deleted road side assistance" where he was. Imagine our surprise when she replied we could not possibly be 1/2 mile west of exit 25 on I 40 because there's no such exit!!!! Poor us, we not only were stranded but we obviously had no idea where we were standing!!

The calls back and forth began to wear on both of us. Finally, a TDOT incident response truck arrived (thanks for the cold drinks and the matches). They had a battery pack and gave le pig a boost of go go juice. It was almost enough.

By now we had been on roadside appx 3 hours. Mission was complete and Whiz Bang had called saying if the tow driver didnt arrive soon he would head our way with a tailier. Tow driver never got to us before we took the charge.

I led the way into Oakland where the paln was to get to Whiz Bang at a place called The O-Zone. This was close enough to where he lives. Well the Pig crapped out on Sporty one more time. Close enough to not ned to wory about it. We drove in my car the rest of the way.

Sporty Pig and i didn't make the destination for the mission. Sadly for him, because he went from point A all the way over here. I'm ok with not making it into the armory, as long as I knew one rider was not alone on the roadside.

My wife was disapointed I didn't get home early like i had planned but if I had broke down, I know Sporty and the Pig woulda stopped for me. Hopefully when that time comes, some one will be there with me on that road side.

Special thanks to all our escorts!!! Of which, we had many. Fred it was so good to see you, last I heard from you, you were sick alot. Many thanks to all of you in Rolling Thunder who came out and made some returning soldiers feel like ROCK STARS!!

You didn't have the view I did of that long line of bikes getting on the highway. I wish I had sense enough to bring a camera. However, it is another wonderful memory I shall have. If I go blind tomorrow, the views from my position as tail gunner will be among my favorites! Seeing all these bikes, running into the wind, knowing why they are formed up, puts lumps in my throat.

Welcome home 130 MPs - sorry I didn't get to shake your hands but a good quality medic type never leaves a wounded or sick comrade behind.

DOC Lee arrived safely home via rt 64-18-45 south at appx 9pm after stopping for a gallon of milk. Status of the pig at this point is unknown.

Update on the Pig just received. The pig is undergoing tests at Bumpus of Memphis, prognosis is good. The electrical problem is still not pinpointed but confidence is high that there could be the slow rumble of the pig headed east as early as this afternoon.

Back up plans for getting Sporty home include, him riding Whizbang's bike home, or riding with me in Big Red to get home later this week (tomorrow?).

Let's all take a moment to think positive thoughts for the Pig. This is the most famous ride in TN PGR folks and we should hope for good news from the Bumpus techs soon! Sporty isn't the type of person we want around west TN too long!!! We got to think positve to get him home to the other side!!

Doc, Thanks for stopping on the side of the road and picking up Sporty Pig. And thanks to Capt_Whizbang and his wife for giving the pig a temporary barn to stay in. Get him home as soon as you can. His "Honey Do" list is getting pretty long! Still no word on what the problem is or how long to get it fixed. He'll be in West TN for a while longer. Thanks again to everyone.

Oh no, there goes the nieghborhood. Luckily I live 50 miles east of the fallout zone. My pleasure, he is highly regarded in my opinion. My wife loved meeting him on that last home coming, after all my stories. Your husband is one of my favorites in PGR.

Sporty is back home. Seems the West TN border patrol discovered my presence and insisted I get back over on the East side of the TN River.

Sadly, the Pig won't be back in the barn until sometime on Sunday. In the mean time, I've got a sweet Road King to tool around on. Thanks a million for everything capt_whizbang. Thanks for your help also Doc (I dunno about being famous.....infamous, yep that's for sure) I guess for a few days I'll just hafta be SportyHog.

Welcome Home 130th. Sorry I didn't get ya all the way there, but I did get ya to my West TN brothers and sisters. And fortunately, I was able to meet and shake the hand of most of you in Smyrna before we departed, and some more at our Fuel stop halfway to Memphis.

Until we meet again......Ride Safe! (and keep a strong electrical system)

In brotherhood,
