I would like to express my most sincere and heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the family and friends of Spc. William L. McMillan III.  May God bless you all, may He ease your pain and sorrow at this most difficult time, and may you all rest assured that William's service and ultimate sacrifice will NEVER be forgotten!!

William...A simple Thank YOU is hardly enough recompense for what you have done for US!  Your courage and selflessness led you to stand in defense of our uniquely American way of life.  Your Bravery and character stand as testament to your Patriotism and Love of country.  We are all now in your debt, one which can never be fully repaid.  May God Bless you, and may you Rest in Eternal Honored Peace!

Thank you for the mission you gave to your life in protecting our freedoms, and striving to give others, theirs. The lives of you and the men and women who have gone before you are raised high, and not given in vain. I honor you, and pray that our children will learn to do the same throughout coming generations. God bless your family, and may they keep their memories alive and rejoice in the life of a hero.

We had a total of 20 members that signed in for this phase of the mission this morning. We also had three more that joined us at the hanger. Several of them were on their first mission and I wanted to thank each of them for coming out and honoring Cpl. McMillan and his family today. Also a big thanks to everyone who was present for this phase of Cpl. Mcmillan's homecoming.

We staged at the National Guard Armory there at Bluegrass Field at 9:30am this morning. Mission briefing was given at 9:50am and we proceeded to the hanger where the aircraft was scheduled to arrive. The aircraft arrived at approximately 10:45am and we posted our flag line while Cpl. McMillan was taken off of the plane. He was placed into the hearse by the Honor Guard while bagpipes were being played. The minister then had a word of prayer prior to us leaving for the funeral home. We mounted up and formed to the motorcade to Kerr Brothers with a police escort from Lexington Metro Police. We arrived at the funeral home and posted the flag line while Cpl. McMillan was taken inside. We broke down and held a short post-mission briefing with all of our riders that were there. Phase 1 of this mission is now complete.

Phase 2 of this mission begins tomorrow @ 2:30pm. I can not emphasize enough how important it is that each and every member that plans to participate in this phase BEGIN HYDRATING YOURSELF TODAY! The temperature forecasted for Lexington tomorrow is 94 degrees and the flag line will be posted in the hottest portion of the day! There will be fluids available on this phase of the mission but we need to start preparing our bodies today for the long, hot day tomorrow. Once again I thank each of you for what you mean to this organization and what you mean to me personally as Ride Captain. Your unwavering support for this family is astounding!

I send my heartfelt condolences to the family of CPL William L. McMillan. Please know your loved one is a hero in the hearts of true patriots all across America. Many of our citizens will never know the sacrifices made by those who defend our freedoms, or the sacrifices made by their families and loved ones…as a veteran, I know. Jesus said, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends”. Though I did not know William personally, his sacrifice and service to the United States of America makes him my “friend”. God be with you.

Bill. We never met, until tonight. Then, of course, it was too late. For you perhaps, but not for me. I've heard about you for months. I'm the mattress guy your dad told you about. He walked up to me in the office one day and said Sergeant Major, is it possible to buy things from the PX On-Line? I said to him, are you kidding me Lloyd? We're talking about AAFES here, the Federal Friggin Government for Christ's Sake, of COURSE it's possible. If the government can separate you from your cash...they're all OVER IT!

Bill, your dad and I had OTHER things in common too. He was an officer; I was a senior Non-Comm. You were a Non Comm, and I have a son that is an officer. Lieutenant Dan I call him. He doesn't appreciate that nearly as much as I do. Must be a generational thing. Lt Dan is in Iraq now. I retired when I got home from Iraq in 04 after 22 years of service. But this isn't about me, it's about you.

Your dad was very proud of you. Of your decision to leave VMI and a sure slot as an officer, to enlist and serve at the grunt level, WITH grunts. Sure he was scared, who isn't. But he was Proud, brother. Very proud. You gave up a school billet to enlist and work for a living. That takes guts man. Lots of guts. And you did it. Your old man recognized that. I recognized that recognition in him. Being an old NCO I often wonder about officer's and what they're thinking. Whether they really look down on us grunts as the stories from Hollywood portray or whether they don't' give a rats keester, cause serving is what matters, in ANY capacity.

In your dad I see the genuine article. He was proud of you for who you were. Not who you could have been or might have been, but who you were. That is rare, and worthy of comment. Although we never met, you must have been a good son, and man, to inspire such feelings in a father. I'm a father, I know.

In closing Bill, I just want to tell you that you can sleep well, and peacefully. You earned it. Since I retired I have often felt that something was missing from my life, some sense of belonging. Tonight at your visitation I saw the Patriot Riders, and was glad to see them there. My wife had texted me to tell me the nut jobs from Kansas might show tomorrow and the bikers were out in force to ensure you had a reverent, quiet, respectful service. I'm a retired soldier. I'm a fellow Iraq veteran. I'm also a biker. Tonight, in your honor, I joined the Patriot Riders. Tomorrow I'll be in a suit, in the church, and at your gravesite. But in the future, I'll be on my bike, in your honor, escorting other heroes to their final rest if the Patriot Riders will have me.

What an Honor it was to have held a flag for CPL William L. McMillan, III.
Thank you to the McMillan family & friends for inviting us to show our Respect for CPL William L. McMillan, III.
I want to personally Thank all the other Organizations, Groups & members to have been a small part in this Heroes familys life.
Thank you to everyone in the military that he has served with & especially his unit in Iraq that are still making a difference there.

Escort / July 17, 2008

Visitation / July 18, 2008

We staged the the Beaumont Kroger's parking lot at 2:30 pm. Briefing was given at 3:15 pm followed by a prayer for the family and friends of our fallen hero. We proceeded to the funeral home and posted the flag line at 3:40 pm. Staked flags were placed on either side of the entrance to Kerr Brothers(Thanks Will and Mike!). There were 32 members who stood the line in the heat and sun in honor of Bill McMillan. Thank you to each and every one of you!

Services / July 19, 2008

We were supposed to stage at 8 am, however when I arrived at 7:45 am, the funeral director alread had CPL McMillan in the hearse and was ready to go to the church. He told me that there had been some changes after the visitation was over. We quickly regrouped and proceeded on the 3 mile run to Southland Christian Church straight out Harrodsburg Road since the family was due to arrive at 8:30 am. I already had an advance party there so the flag line was posted when we arrived. Our members served as the Honor Guard to help take CPL McMillan into the church. The flag line remained posted until we were sure that all immediate family members were inside the church. We then broke down the line and repositioned our bikes to be ready for the procession after the services. The church had a room set aside for us with food and beverages which we greatly appreciated. The flag line was reassembled at 9:15 and kept in place until just after the services began. We grouped together to give another briefing during the service to let everyone know the details of the escort mission to the cemetery. We discussed routes, speed, possible obstacles, and lane selection. An advance team was sent on to the cemetery to have a flag line posted and staked flags lining the entrance. The flag line was then posted for the post service procession out of the church. After CPL McMillan was in the hearse we broke down the flag line and mounted up for the trip to the cemetery. Much of the route was lined with supporters from the community and other motorcycle clubs and groups. Task Force Omega had a large contingent of bikes, members, and flags, which included a large crane with a giant flag flying from it. Thank you TFO! There were literally several thousand supporters from the info that I was given by LEO count. Fantastic! The procession was so long that we had a very hard time getting the whole line into the cemetery. By the time that we who were in the procession got to the service site, it had already begun. The advance team had the flag line covered though. After services were over we gave a short briefing and disbanded and headed to a restaurant that used to be called "John Michael's" for some COLD drinks and food!
On a personal note I have a lot of people that I want to thank, First I want to thank each and every member that came out and stood the line for Bill McMillan. Your patriotism and respect for this family has humbled me. You have proved to this community that honor and respect are alive and well here in Kentucky! God bless each and everyone of you! Next, I would like to say to my assistant captains and to my advance party captains and crews that without you missions of this magnitude can not be accomplished. One person is not capable and can not be everywhere. I emphasized the word TEAM in the emails that I have sent you and that is what I meant. A TEAM works together to attain a common goal. That goal was to repsect CPL McMillan and his family and to shield them from those radicals who would deter from the dignity of a proper service and burial. I say to you that we have attained our goal. Thank you each a and every one! Mission Accomplished! I know that I have been long winded but you can understand as I am the son of an eastern Kentucky preacher. It is in my blood! I am always astounded by your sacrifice and giving. You ALL hold a special place in my heart! God bless each and every one of you! Respectfully and humbly submitted,
