There is only one hotel in Jackson - The Jackson Inn. There are 70 rooms at this hotel and they said they would give anyone from the PGR a discounted rate of $45.00 - just tell them you are from the PGR at the time of registration. Jackson Inn is about a a half mile past the Funeral Home (close). The phone number is - 1-800-521-5271.
The next nearest hotel is off the Mountain Parkway in Campton - about 15 -20 miles north of Jackson - The Campton Parkway Inn. Didn't stop there, just FYI.
As for food, there are the usual fast food restraints - KFC, Pizza Hut, McDonalds, etc. There is also a local restaurant - The Old Country Inn.
The Funeral Home sits upon a hill across from a strip mall. There are two entrances, both very steep!! Be careful!!
There are basically two choices as far as a route goes to get to Jackson -the Mountain Parkway off of I-64 near Winchester and Rt. 15 from Winchester or Clay City. I took both routes today and like Rt. 15 the best. The reasons are, 55 mph speed limit vs 70 mph on the Parkway, nice scenery on 15 especially as you near Red River Gorge and Natural Bridge area. But, there are a couple of hazards on Rt. 15 - when you see a road sign that says "Loose Gravel" belive it!! There is a gravel company located in a curve about 5 miles south of Clay City. And, there are about three "switchbacks" near Natural Bridge and Red River Gorge - just take it easy.

I plan on going up tomorrow afternoon and getting a room there at the Jackson Inn. If anyone wants to double up to defray some of the costs let me know and I'll be looking for you. FYI

My heartfelt condolences to the family and the brothers he served with. Thanks to you and your family for your service. We are a greatfull nation!!
I plan to ride on Friday morning to Jackson. If anyone is going from the Radcliff, E-town or Fort Knox area, I would like to join or be joined by them for the ride. Please putt the word out. I would like to see a good turn out to honor this soldier and his family.

| Thank you to the family of SGT Estell Turner. You have given so much for this nation. I am truly saddened by the loss of this young man who leaves behind so much. It is important that you know that the American people appreciate the sacrifice SGT Turner made. We share their grief. I pray that God will bless the family with fond memories of Estell that will help them through the most troubling times. May they each find strength in God. |

Final Inspection

I never got to thank SGT TURNER here on earth , but I will make sure to thank him when I see him in HEAVEN.
I will be in Jackson (Wolf Coal) the23 & 24 of august for the( Raliegh reunion)
It would be an Honor to meet some of SGT Turners family or friends .I will be on a red Harley the one in the picture Ohio plates on bike.

Ride Report by Mike Whitaker:
Airport Mission
Information received that he was to arrive at the TACAir terminal at 11:00 hours, July 9th. A Small group of PGR members arrived and discovered the arrival terminal was changed to Air 51. Everyone moved there and met the plane without incident. That is also where we met with the widow and CAO. The widow was offered any assistance we could give and asked how she would like us to proceed on the escorts and visitation. I explained how we conduct the flag lines and escorts to which she indicated she was very happy about. A small contingent escorted the Hearse from Lexington to Jackson.
Visitation
Visitation was held between 6:00 pm and 9:00 pm at Watts Funeral Home in Jackson where we had 4 members participate. The staging point was the parking lot across the street from the funeral home. We also met a local patriot (Larry) who stated he would like to help in the flag lines. We employed his services and was very impressed with his patriotism and enthusiasm. We stayed from 5:45 until 8:30.
Funeral
Staging time for the funeral was 9:30 in the parking lot identified as the staging point. We have all members present sign the PGR waivers. We then moved across the street and formed a flag line across the front of the building until the services started at 10:00, then moved the flag line to the area where SGT Turner was brought out of the building to the Hearse.
The procession left Jackson at 11:30 and traveled, with PGR and LEO escort to Camp Nelson arriving at approximately 1:50. The procession was held at Camp Nelson until 3:00 before being allowed to conduct the ceremony.
A flag line was formed to the back of the pavilion until the end of the ceremony after which every one was released. |
