I am posting for Ride Captain, Ted Seamon. He is in Nashville at the moment but just got word that the Bowling Green Mission is A STAND DOWN. I am sure that he will post as soon as he gets home but he wanted all to be aware of this so that no one makes anymore plans to take off and try to get there.

Don't know the reason for the stand down but will be there in thoughts. Let's all say a prayer that God will watch over this funeral and let the Halsel family have the peace they will need. To Sgt. Halsel's family, you will be in all our thoughts during this trying time and the sacrifice will never be forgotten.

SSGT Santiago M. Halsel

This afternoon we received word from the CAO that Mrs. Halsel did not want any groups to attend the funeral of her husband. She made this decision out of consideration of the possibility of a confrontation between the groups. Even though it was made clear to those who were communicating with Mrs. Halsel that Patriot Guard is a non-confrontational group, they acknowledge that, but the decision was the same.

Thank you to all of you who were standing by to support this mission. Your messages have been offered to the family for their review and consideration.

Thank you to Janet Russell, Heather Crawford, Ky Scooter man, Mike Boston and Janette Temple for all their work in support of the set up for this event. You made a great team.

Standing by for the next assignment.

I would also like to thank everybody that helped on this mission and all the standbys.....I do wish we could be there for the family but I also understand why the don't want us there.

I feel bad that the family seems not to have understood the PGR's non-confrontational mission. A few of us on a mission in Wisconsin yesterday were wondering if the uglies did show up, and if so, were the LEO's able to keep them out of earshot - hopefully, the new law worked. I read that the Kentucky law is the first one the not-a-clue ACLU decided to file a lawsuit against. Thoughts and prayers to the family and to the memory of Sgt. Halsel.

I found this online. Sounds like it was the military funeral that it should have been, full of honor and respect.

Daily News (Bowling Green, KY)

Sgt. Halsel laid to rest
Warren County soldier killed May 16 in Baghdad; relative says Halsel ‘positive person’
BRIAN WHITE, The Daily News, bwhite@bgdailynews.com/783-3243
Published: May 26, 2006
More than 100 family members and friends of a Bowling Green soldier killed last week in Iraq gathered Thursday for his funeral and burial.

Many of the mourners wore buttons and T-shirts with a picture of Army Staff Sgt. Santiago M. Halsel, 32, who died in Baghdad on May 16 when an improvised explosive device detonated while he was on patrol.

In the picture, Halsel wore camouflage fatigues and a broad grin. That image matched a description of Halsel made by his cousin, Effort Hayes, who said the Army changed Halsel’s life and that he was always “a positive person.”

“He was the type of person you’d never know he had a problem in his life,” Hayes said of Halsel, whose nickname was “Taygo.”

Halsel, who served in the 101st Airborne Division, was deployed to Iraq in December, Hayes said. It was his second tour in the country, and his 10th year in the Army, which he joined in November 1996, Hayes said.

It was also his 10th year of marriage to Susan Smith Halsel, with whom he had a son, Donovan Halsel, and a daughter, LaShae Halsel. He also had another daughter, Sydney Covington.

Halsel joined the Army to support his family, but he got much more than a paycheck from the job, Hayes said.

“It was the best thing that ever happened to him,” Hayes said. “It just made him a better person.”

The Army changed Halsel “from a boy to a man” and taught him about responsibility, Hayes said.

“When he went in the service, he started thinking more like a husband, more like a father, just began taking care of his responsibilities,” Hayes said.

Halsel was buried in a small cemetery at Cowles Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, of which he was a member. At the funeral service at Mount Zion Baptist Church, Halsel’s wife was presented with the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star, awarded to Halsel posthumously.

Other traditional military honors were performed at the burial. A rifle team from Fort Campbell fired a 21-gun salute in three volleys, followed by a bugler playing taps.

The team then folded the American flag that covered his steel coffin. The flag was presented to his wife by Maj. Gen. James H. Pillsbury, who gave a second flag to Halsel’s father, Vesdon Brooks.

The pastor of Cowles, Earl Kinnard, prayed with the mourners twice, before and after the military honors were bestowed.

“He paid the ultimate price and one day you and I are going to go down this road,” Kinnard said to “Amens” from the crowd.

Kinnard also prayed for Halsel’s family.

“We ask that you strengthen his family,” Kinnard said. “We ask that you comfort his family.”

Halsel’s family and friends used prayer to ask for his safety while he was in Iraq, but it was simply his time to pass on, Hayes said.

“We all prayed that he would come back, but he just didn’t,” he said.

There is no explanation for it, Hayes said.

“You know people say, ‘Why?,’ but that’s a question you can’t answer,” he said.
