MISSION REPORT:
Edward James "Jim" O'Brien
US Navy WWII, US Army Korea

TUESDAY 1 July 2008
Staged with 15 Cycles and 1 Cage,
Reviewed the 2 Day mission with "Rat" (ARC) and held the mission briefing.
Set the Flag Line,
Spoke with Wallie (brother) and Nephews, Niece's, past on our condolences, informed family that it is a honor to welcome Jim home to American soil.
All were grateful for the MN-PGR and the Flag Line.
Many Korean Veteran's came and paid there respects where they conducted TAPS for Jim.

During the Visitation a gentleman came up to us, and invited us down to the VFW for a round, being there was a small group I accepted. Later I found out that this was Jim's Nephew, and when we arrived at the VFW his family was there, introductions were made and a TOAST to "Jim" welcoming him home!

A member of the VFW and a Veteran, bought us another round and thanked us and the MN-PGR for all that we do.

Wednesday 2 July 2008
22 Bikes, 2 Cages, for the family service,
5 Bikes for the escort, ARC-IC Dennis Mehrer
8 Bikes at the House, ARC-IC Richard Johnston "Rat" Bringing Edwards O'Brien home, to his child hood resident's and Wallie's current home.
24 more bikes staged with ARC-IC John Foster "Kneecap" at Fort Snelling and met up with the rest of the group at FSNC.

Set up flag Line, and awaited the family of Edward James O'Brien. Presented the MN-PGR Plaque to Wally during the short family service.
Departed for Fort Snelling National Cemetery,
Sent a small group to Jim's Child hood home for a drive by and bring Jim home one last time.
Left 5 members of the PGR behind to act as a honor guard and escorts for Jim to Fort Snelling National Cementery.
Services conducted at Fort Snelling National Cementery, a very fitting way to bring Edward James "Jim" O'Brien Home to rest.

Notes from ARC's and members,

---------------------

I had 5 bikes for escort for Jim O'Briens Internment. We went by his child hood home and stopped for about 30 seconds and then went on to Fort Snelling National Cemetery. The ride went well to Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

We had a very good turnout at the staging area at the "Old Horse Barn" for the O'Brien mission. My briefing was brief so that we could get over to Ft. Snelling National Cemetery around the same time as Indian John's group. It worked out well. There were a few new members at this mission. I had a chance to talk to a couple after the mission who had come in from Mankato. They were really glad that they came and that it all was handled very professionally by all of the MNPG. It was very moving for them. It was a good mission and Indian John, Dennis and others did a great job. It was an honor to be there for this great family. They can have some peace and closure now.

Thanks everyone for showing your support to the family and giving thanks and respect to this great hero.

----------------------

While I was standing on the flag line, I noticed a lady about two blocks up Marie Ave come out of her house and start walking our direction. I didn't think too much about it until she got about a half block away. It appeared she was looking directly at the flag line. As she got closer, I realized she was definitely looking at us. At first I feared we had done something to offend her. (IE: loud pipes, cycle gang, etc) The way she marched up to me was like she was going to complain about something. Anyway, she walked right up to me and said: "I just found out what you guys are doing and I want to thank you." "Thank you for your patriotism!" I was a bit surprised and was only able to mumble a "you're welcome". With that, she turned and marched the two blocks back to her house. About a half hour later she came out again and walked up to me and asked if this was the O'Brien funeral. When I said yes, she walked to the front of the funeral home and went in. That was the last I saw of her.

The escort went very well. The five of us on bikes left the funeral home following the procession's lead vehicle with the hearse directly behind us. There were about 10 to 15 cars behind the hearse. When we got to O'Brien's childhood home, our PGR members were standing straight and tall right in front of the house. Their bikes were angle parked directly in front of them. They looked like someone had called: "Dress right Dress" because they were perfectly spaced and very formal in their stance. It even looked like someone had taken a tape measure and made sure the bikes were evenly spaced apart. The Lead vehicle and our 5 bikes went past the house and stopped. The hearse then stopped right in front of the house and paused for about 30 seconds. A VERY EMOTIONAL MOMENT!!! We then moved on and proceeded to Fort Snelling National Cemetery. As we were approaching the river crossing, the PGR members that were at the house caught up to us on the freeway. The hearse saw who they were and backed off enough that they were able to fall in right behind us. It looked like it had been planned. When we got to the staging area, they went on to join the flag line. The original five escorts stayed with the procession.

As we approached the flag line at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery, I was very impressed with the flag line and how many additional PGR members had shown up. I had been disappointed with the showing we had at the funeral home, but it was definitely impressive at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

My over all impression of the whole mission was that we were very successful in providing a long awaited welcome home to a true American hero.

I just want to share with you...
In reading the paper today about the Minnesota Korean war veteran who was buried with military honors after having been listed as missing for almost 50 years. It brought tears to my eyes to read that the Minnesota Patriot Guard was present for his burial and formed a flag line at Ft Snelling. Thank you for all you and the Patriot Guard does for our veterans. I just wish that other areas and states honored veterans as well as Minnesota does. Have a great 4th! I hope all is well.
