378th Transportation:
It has truly been an honor and a privilege to have gone to drill with you the last couple of years. Of all the units in the 450th Battalion, you are by far the best group to be with (biased opinion there, of course). I will definitely be there in spirit with all of you during your deployment. I have the fullest of confidence that each and every one of you will do your duties well and serve your country proudly.
Do your job, stay safe, and come back home with pride of your service and sacrafice for your country.

Patriot Guard:
I was asked to put together an itinerary for those wanting to ride into Manhattan from the East (Kansas City).
Roughly speaking:
4:00 AM meet at Doc's coffee shop (McDonalds) off of 435 and 87th street (Kansas Side). 4:45 AM swing through McDonalds on Turnpike (I-70), 7 miles east of Lawrence. 5:15 AM swing through Service area on Turnpike (I-70), 4 miles east of Topeka. 6:00 AM brief stop at the Paxico REST AREA (in medium of I-70) . 6:45 AM Arrive at Griffith Army Reserve Center in Manhattan, KS.
Feel free to join us at any point along this route.
For those that have never been on a mission, this would be a great mission to join us. You do not have to own a bike, as cages are always welcome, too.
For those that DO make this mission, on behalf of the 450th Transportation Battalion, THANK YOU in advance for taking your personal time to successfully send off these honored Soldiers.
Please feel free to contact me on my cell phone at 816-885-0738.

My Report,
Send Off To Iraq- 378th Transportation Detachment, Manhattan, KS 21 JUL 08
Our Ride Captain on this Send Off was Kai. Thanks so much for all that you do and stepping up to take on this assignment.
The day started off very early for FirePlug and me as I am sure with all others. We left Belton, MO at 0300 for “Doc’s” Coffee Shop. There we met Curt and his lady friend to head on out to Manhattan, KS.
Upon arriving at the gate of the Armory the gate was closed and locked. A few minutes later they opened the gates. Right after that Kai, Wingnut and Gary arrived. Kai brought the flags and Wingnut and Gary on their bikes with big flags. Wingnut came in from Olathe and Gary from Hutchison.
After talking with several of the members of this unit and their superiors, we took our positions in a flag line in front of the bus and the formal formation of the 378th Transportation Unit.
From there FirePlug brought us to attention in from of the unit as they received words of support and encouragement from their Captain. FirePlug then asked for me to present two flags: 1. a flag which signified our support of our troops signed by many and 2. A flag that has flown on many missions including Apaches, 421st Black Widows, Maintenance and Support Units. This flag was presented to SGT. Christopher Jacobs to take care of on behalf of this unit.
FirePlug and Wingnut, two of our Vietnam Veterans handed out Patriot Guard Challenge Coins to each Soldier departing with words of support.
As the Soldiers start to board the bus, we moved our flag line to the entrance of the bus. We shook each soldiers hand offering our best words of concern of the duty they are about to perform for our country.
Wingnut and Gary on their bikes with big flags escorted the bus to I-70 and Curt, FirePlug and I escorted them into Kansas City and beyond.
When FirePlug and went thru Grandview, MO at about 11:45 the temperature was ninety-nine.
Send off and Escort Complete.
“AJ”
PS. Thanks to Kai, Wingnut, FirePlug and Gary for everything you did to make this Send Off Special as Sgt. Christopher Jacobs is the son of Curt and my nephew who we so dearly love. Christopher and your Unit – We are so proud of you and we pray for all of you and your families.
We thank the 378th for allowing us to participate and show our support in your send off to Iraq. We hope to be there upon your unit’s return.
