Press release:

102ND MILITARY HISTORY DETACHMENT DEPARTURE CEREMONY SET FOR JUNE 27

Three Kansas National Guardsmen will be honored in a departure ceremony on Friday, June 27 as they prepare to deploy to Afghanistan. The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. at the Kansas National Guard Museum, 6700 South Topeka Blvd (the main entrance of Forbes Field).

The unit’s mission will be to record and document the various missions of the U.S. military serving in Afghanistan.  They will be conducting interviews, collecting documents, taking photos and videos, and cataloging artifacts to preserve the history of Operation Enduring Freedom.

“Documenting what our Soldiers and Airmen are accomplishing during deployment is an invaluable mission that will mean the work of our Guardsmen and other military in Afghanistan will forever be remembered,” said Maj. Gen. Tod Bunting, the Adjutant General. “We appreciate the skills these Soldiers bring to the war and thank them in advance for the sacrifices they are making.”

The Soldiers, under the command of Maj. Damon Frizzell, have been receiving their pre-mobilization training at Salina, Kan.  In early July they will go to Fort Benning, Ga., to finish their training and then from there deploy to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Once the Soldiers of the historical detachment gather the materials, they send them to the U.S. Army Center of Military History in Washington, D.C., where it is cataloged in the Military History Collection System Integration.

MISSION REPORT

First of all, I want to thank again the brave men of the 102nd for their service to our country. 18 bikes 2 cages attended the ceremony for the 3 men being deployed in support of OEF. They will document and report for historical records the activities of our armed forces.

Even though there were only 3 deploying, there was no lack of brass and fanfare for them. The commander of the 102nd was overwhelmed that we where there for his guys. I told him that there could be 3, 30, or 300, and we would be there for them regardless. It was heartbreaking at times to see the wives and children that would be missing their loved ones while deployed.

On a side note, huge props to the Kansas National Guard Museum where the ceremony was held. It was the first time I had been in it and I was blown away by the displays. If you are ever in Topeka, make it a point to take a tour. Also, thanks to our National Captain Big Dog for being there. I guess I should say not-so-Big Dog. He has lost 85 pounds and looks great!! Congrats my friend. Thanks for the riders that were there, and those who could not attend but where there in spirit with us. Job well done everyone!

Mission Complete.
