Final Inspection
The soldier stood and faced God, Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining. Just as brightly as his brass. "Step forward now, soldier. How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek? To My Church have you been true?" The soldier squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't. Because those of us who carry guns, Can't always be a saint. I've had to work most Sundays, And at times my talk was tough. And sometimes I've been violent, Because the world is awfully rough. But, I never took a penny, That wasn't mine to keep.... Though I worked a lot of overtime. When the bills just got too steep. And I never passed a cry for help, Though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God, forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears. I know I don't deserve a place, Among the people here. They never wanted me around, Except to calm their fears. If you've a place for me here, Lord. It needn't be so grand. I never expected or had too much, But if you don’t, I’ll understand. There was a silence all around the throne, Where the saints had often trod. As the soldier waited quietly, For the judgment of his God. "Step forward now, soldier you’ve borne your burdens well. Walk peacefully on Heaven’s streets; you’ve done your time in Hell."

Honored Individual: Reid W. Barney, WWII Army Veteran, Toppenish, Wa.
Date Of Mission: 6-20-08
Ride Captain: Chris “DeCaf” Schuermann
Road Captain: Paula Schuermann
Mission Lead Time: 3 Days
Mission Plan Recap: For this mission there was a very short notice. From the time I received a call back from the POC to flag line was approx. 45 hours. This was a two stage ride and mission. Everyone arrived at the first staging location fine and early. At KSU there was 4 bikes and a support vehicle carrying flags for a total of 6 persons(One of us was riding 2 up). We made our way to Zillah, the second staging location, where we met up with 3 more riders and a car full of support. At KSU we had 13 people going approx. 2 miles. Roads were good and only 3 stop signs. After arriving at our last staging point we were joined by a local (Robert Davison) out of Toppenish. Which gave us 14 total for the flag line. We found the church quickly and after a mishap on my part of lining the flag line up at the wrong door we moved to the right door. Lined up and on time. Just after 10 am we dismissed for our break between flag lines. Our “local” was instrumental with letting us know where the good cup of coffee and the closest restrooms were. At 1100 we all lined up again at the right door awaiting the loading of the casket into the coach. Approx. 30 minutes later we dismissed made our way back to the bikes, stashed the flags, debriefed and headed on our way.
Mission Personal Standouts: Lonnie and Gary for riding all the way from La Grande. The support vehicle support was awesome and greatly appreciated.
Number of Bikes: 7
Number of Cages: 2
Number of Attendees: 14 |
