A true American Hero has passed at the age of 100 in Red Lodge Montana. At the time of his passing Joe Papez was the oldest living Purple Heart Veteran. Also a recipient of the Silver Star and two Bronze Stars for his heroism during the campaigns in North Africa and Italy. Joe was also awarded three Purple Hearts for wounds suffered in combat.
After WWII and throughout the rest of his exemplary life Joe worked tirelessly to serve his fellow Veterans of all conflicts. In October 2007 U.S. Senator Jon Testor (MT) paid tribute nationally to Joe Papez for his lifetime of service to our country and it's military personnel. Joe never spoke of his medals or his legendary status as a Warrior and Hero. As a member of the Purple Heart Veterans Association his focus was always on service to our Veterans and their families.

Services will be held at 1330 hrs on Flag Day, 14 June at the Veterans Memorial Civic Center, 14th st. West and Oakes ave. in Red Lodge Montana.

Burial will follow at the Red Lodge cemetery. PGR will provide escort from the Civic Center to the cemetery. Joe will be buried with full Military Honors.

Staging for this Mission will be at 1200 hrs. at the US Post Office, 119 Hauser Ave, Red Lodge.

We will proceed to the Civic Center(2 blocks west) at 1230 hrs and establish our flag line(s).

A final note; Joe Papez, at the age of 100, after six decades, could still wear his Army Uniform and proudly stand straght and tall. So shall the PGR in his honor.
 

I will act as RC for this mission, and urge all Patriot Guard Riders who can possibly attend, to do so.

Can not be understated, May 23rd I lost my father, WWII T/5 Alfred Bianco, and now I have lost a good friend, what an honor to have known and been a friend of Joe. Recently I lost a father, who had become a close friend, and now I have lost a friend who has become just as a father to me. Both men humble, both men valiant! I will miss both of you dearly, and my life is the better from both of you!
