I no way mean for this to interfer with the mission report that BikerBill will post, but I am moved to say something about our time yesterday at this mission. I have been in aviation for years. I have flown in about any kind of plane anyone would fly me in and have spent a bunch of time in the air ballooning. This family had such a fitting tribute for a man that loved aviation. I was really moved by the entire time we were out on the water. What a beautiful place out on the lake. The thriil of seeing the planes coming up the lake, the beautiful flags flying with the reflection on the water, and the joyous sounds as Lt Col Harrington's remains were returned to back to the earth; well it is something I will never forget. Although this is the balloonist prayer, it is fitting for the way the wonderful family decided to honor the life of this man. It was clear to me the love they had for this man. To the family I say thank you for allowing us to be part of such a special day to remember your loved one.
The Winds have welcomed you with softness.
The Sun has blessed you with warm hands.
You have flown so high and so well,
that God has joined you in your laughter.
And he has set you gently back again
into the loving arms of Mother Earth.

Very nice Susan... for the record and for all to know... their is no sanctity in the mission report of the ride captain. I would urge anyone who attends any mission to share your thoughts. There was a time when, out of respect, members would wait until the RC posted their final report before adding their comments. The true respect is for the family. Please share your reports.
My report will come soon... and my thoughts are no more relevant than yours. We have a mission to complete today. It has been a very long and emotional weekend. I have much to say but it will have to wait until tonight or perhaps tomorrow.
This was indeed a special mission and as far as I know a first for the PGR...
My thanks to all who attended. You were in a very special place that morning. |

| The above description of this mission (by Highflyer/Susan) is excellent. The day was perfect; clear blue sky, calm water, a spiritual feeling about the entire ceremony that was difficult to describe. One PGR member was heard to say, "this is the only thing I would miss going to church for." The tone of the entire morning was full of respect, honor and LOVE! Colonel Ted had to have been smiling down at us.....his true family and his PGR family, together remembering him as one big family showing lots of love. Like all heroes, he must have been a very special man. |

| What an incredible event for an incredible family! First of all, I'd like to express my heartfelt appreciation for Lt Col. Ted Harrington's service and sacrifice for this great nation. Also, thank you to Lt. Col Harrington's family for allowing us the privilege of attending such a breathtaking tribute. As has been stated before, the day was perfect - even though it was supposed to rain. At one point, the breeze picked up, opening our flags to their full glory. The family, even in mourning, obviously in celebration of Lt. Col. Harrington's life and accomplishments.
As a Marine Mom (Cpl Dan Spaulding), I got to carry the Marine Corps flag. I was humbled. I am no veteran. I've never served my country. I don't know how it feels, and I don't know how to heal the wounds of our heros - either past or present. I still feel so underserving of that honor at this event, but I was so proud to 'Stand for someone who stood for us (me)'. I cannot express how blessed I was to be able to witness something so great.
I am also at a loss to express how it feels to stand amongst you all. Many thanks to everyone. Again, thank you to all our warriors. |

Thank You to the family of Lt. Col. Harrington for allowing us to be present to honor this Marine Aviator. I must confess, this was my first PGR mission in a boat, which just goes to prove that "we don't care what you ride, or even IF you ride, as long as you show respect." I was in one of the three smaller boats, so we had an incredible view of the pontoon boat, which sailed with about a dozen American flags flying in the breeze. Biker Bill was in very center with his flag flying higher than the rest, it was a very patriotic sight. But the "lead boat" was the one that brought tears. Sitting out on the bow of the boat were PGR's with the American flag held high, flanked by the Marine flag and the PGR flag. Another four or so American flags were flying from the back (stern?) of that boat. It was a beautiful sight, those flags flying! I really hope a few pictures show up, but unfortunately the best photographer of the bunch was piloting that lead boat. Then we had a few more flags on the other two boats. We did get to lend one of our flags to a boat full of a family that had brought their children out to pay respects. Once we were in place, we were joined by the family, sailing in two full pontoon boats. I think Susan caught the reverance of the planes in the ceremony, with her balloonists' prayer. The missing man formation, flown in planes that Lt. Col. Ted would have flown, was a very fitting tribute. Nostalgic, respectful, poignant. His pilot friends "did him proud." Again, thank you to the family for making this such a sweet celebration of a hero's life. It was the perfect setting, executed fabulously. Very inspiring. It was an honor to be there. |

Final Report
I believe it safe to say that the North Carolina Patriot Guard has taken part in a PGR first. We came not by bike but rather by boat to stand in honor of Lt Col Ted Harrington. I'm not sure if spreading one's ashes on the water constitutes a burial at sea, but whether it does or not, we witnessed a truly patriotic ceremony. We were on several boats generously provided by their owners and were joined by family members on two pontoon boats. We positioned ourselved behind the family and waited and watched for the first of the three planes. Then as planned, a yellow Piper Cub appeared and while flying at an altitude of between 10 or 20 feet, Ted's ashes were commited to the surface of Lake Norman. All members of the PGR stood at attention and rendered either a hand salute or held their hands over their hearts. 20 American flags as well as the Marine and PGR flag were flying as his ashes we scattered on the lake. Then right on schedule 2 T6's appeared and passed at low altitude in front of us. As they cleared the group, they rose toward the heavens with one trailing smoke. They returned for another fly-by and the planes tipped their wings over the spot where Ted's ashes had fallen as a final farewell salute to an American Hero.
Immediately after, we were brought along side the family's boats and I boarded to make the plaque presentation. After receiving a thank you and a warm hug from Mrs. Harrington I presented her with the plaque. Those present would tell you that I had a difficult time speaking.. they would be correct. I have a special place in my heart for WWII veterans... the Greatest Generation.
There were many pictures taken and there will also be a DVD and CD made available to me. When received, I will share them with you all.
Special thanks to Rick for the coffee, donuts, and the use of his driveway for parking our bikes.
God Bless you Lt. Col. Harrington and may you rest in eternal peace.
