Ladies and Gentlemen of the Patriot Guard Riders, we have been asked to provide an escort for a group of soldiers returning from Iraq. Please keep in mind while you read this thread that many of the details surrounding this mission will be withheld for reasons of OPSEC. The military has asked that we not post too much detailed information regarding movement of our troops here at home. With that said I am pleased to tell you that we will be escorting from a location south of Seattle to a location in Oregon. The escort will be a two state effort involving Washington and Oregon. We will have a staging for the North riders in Lacey, WA and we will have a staging for the Portland / Vancouver riders on the north side of Vancouver. This mission will take place the morning of April 30th, 2008 and will likely be over around noon. Please come join us if you are able as we escort and welcome home these fine young men and women.
Staging Location for northern leg of escort; Galloping Gertie's Restaurant @ exit 122 off of I-5. Please show up with both tanks full as this will be a long ride.
Staging time; 07:00 - 07:30 AM
Ride Briefing; 07:30 AM
Ride Captain for northern leg; Kevin Williams
Staging Location for southern leg; Chevron Station at 604 NE 179th St, Ridgefield, WA , just west of I-5 at exit # 9
Staging time; 08:00 - 08:30 AM
Ride Briefing; 08:30 AM KSU; 08:45

************** RIDE REPORT *************
Five hearty bikes met in Ridgefield for the ride to Longview. Once in Longview we picked up a 6th. We arrived at Longview about 9:15am and had experienced some rain but not bad. Finally, the Washington group showed up followed by 4 buses of soldiers. The soldiers took the stop opportunity to buy some snacks and use the facilities while the Washington bikes fueled up. One of the soldiers handed out 234th chips to all of the bikes which was pretty cool. Then, we were off again. We had 7 bikes in front of the buses with 5 flying their big flags and 5 more behind the buses. As soon as we crossed the bridge into Oregon, we were met with a fire truck flying a flag across the road and we picked up our escort. I'm not sure all the cars/trucks that pulled over for the flashing lights, realized why they were stopping but it worked out so I'm not going to question it. Now, with a LEO escort (thanks Dave) we were going non-stop from Longview to Camp Rilea and we experienced just about every kind of weather I think you can. We had sun, rain and even hail at times but we just kept on going. We picked up another bike on the way and he said "my brother is on the 2nd bus". The real treat was when we reached Clatskanie. I honestly don't think there was a dry eye among us. There were people lining both sides of the street from one end of the town to the other (see Oregonian picture below). As we approached them, the fire truck started honking the horn and I'm sure the troops thought that was pretty awesome. They had signs welcoming home the 234th Engineers, flags flying and they were cheering like crazy for those troops. We continued on to Camp Rilea where we were met by a lot of soldiers, families, other supporters and a band. Pretty awesome sight. All I can say it was well worth the trip.
WELCOME HOME 234th. It was an honor to escort you home.

To all the Washington and Oregon riders who participated in the escort - THANK YOU!! Some of you probably were involvedin the trip when they were escorted to Salem last summer for deployment.
Several members of this group are local kids from Eastern Oregon, and we've all followed their tour for the last 9 months. Lots of prayers have gone up, several anxious moments - but now they are home safe. They are being met tonight with a hero's welcome in Milton Freewater.
Thank you all again for your help in making this mission happen!
Blessings,
Karen Locke Milton Freewater
