 WELCOME HOME MISSION!!!

MEMPHIS TN

Kilo Company, 3dBn, 23rd Marine Regiment
USMC

SATURDAY, APRIL 26, 2008

MEMPHIS, TN

STAGING:  Wilson AIr on Winchester at 2000 hrs (8 pm)

There are lots of MARINES coming in on one flight Sat night. They should arrive around 2030 hrs (8:30pm) at the Memphis airport; moving on to the Reserve Center on Jackson Ave.

(3114 Jackson Ave, Corner of Jackson and Hudson by Scherring Plough)

The police motorcycle brigade is off the streets around 8 pm so we do NOT have access to a police escort at this time. Do to the time frame and lack of safety to provide our volunteers, we are making this a Flag Line Welcome at the center.

We do need flags!!!

We assume the families will make welcome home signs, but if you would like to bring  your family and have kids make some, that is perfectly acceptable. Feel free to come in cages instead of your bikes. Weather may be wet, but temps not too bad.

We know this is late night for some of you; but think how many late nights these soldiers spent overseas! Lets get together and show our appreciation and support!

Mission Complete! A big thanks to the United States Marine Corps for inviting the PGR to escort this mission. It was a very heartwarming experience to see them all come home safe to their familes. We had a great turnout, and many thanks to the Memphis Police Dept for a great job with the escort. Getting around Memphis traffic on the interstate during the day is no easy chore....to get over 20 bikes and three huge buses around the loop in that fashion at night was fantastic! Welcome home Marines, it was an honor to be a small part of your homecoming!

I read Whiz's email account today. I am deeply moved by it. I was working and I could not have gotten there any earlier than 11pm. I guess I'll have to wait for my feel good mission. Haven't made one since joining, but he's right. They're all emotionally impactful. Thank you all to the folks who did support this mission.

Welcome home Marines- we're glad you allowed us to be there to share that moment with your families.

For all those who launched from the deck and never got back to "mother" .
For fellow DOCs who died so others may live , especially HM1 Gilbert Minjares (El Paso Texas) KIA 7 Feb 2007. A friend I will never forget.

There are many reasons to ride, I do so for more than listed here.

Here is the Capt's account:

Last night about 7:15 I pulled into the FBO at Wilson Air here in Memphis. I was doing a staging area check prior to the arrival of a charter flight bringing home about 150 Marines after their recent stint in the sandbox....a welcome home for our troops, a "feel good" mission. I was a bit at a loss on how to handle this one, my last 18 missions have all been funerals. Finally a mission that wasn't going to hit me so emotionally...or so I thought.

I got off the scoot and went inside to talked to the supervisor on parking and such, and noticed two Marine pilots sitting on a sofa next to the desk...and gave them a quick hello. I introduced myself to the supervisor, and told him who I was, and what we were there for. We talked a bit and got some things worked out. As I turned around to leave, both Marines came up to me, a Lt Col and a Major. They said that they had overheard my converesation, and that THEY wanted to thank ME for my service. I tried to reverse the conversation, and said that it was a privilage and an honor to be there to show respect to these Marines that had been fighting in Iraq this past year. The Major continued to say that they were proud that there were folks at home that "had their backs" here, while they had ours over there. He told me that in Marine Corps circles, the Patriot Guard is held in very high regard....and he was proud. We talked a bit more and I went outside....the emotions were tugging by then......

By 8:30pm I had about 20 riders staged with two police escorts in front. The plane arrived and the Marines boarded three motorcoaches. The three busses came in line behind us, along with two additional crusiers behind them, and we departed the FBO to head to the Marine reserve center on the other side of the city. It's hard enough getting around Memphis interstate traffic during the day...to do it at night with bikes and busses was no less than an amazing effort on the part of the LEO's. At any rate, about 9:15 we arrived at the center, and the gate guards waved us onto the compound. As we pulled in behind the buildings, I was overwhelmed....hundreds of people, family members, wives, parents, kids, former Marines and other vets...were all there to welcome these guys home......it really made be happy to see such an outpouring....and the emotions started tugging again.....

We parked the bikes and one by one watched familes reunited....much different than the other missions where I see familes torn with emotions of sorrow and loss. As the night progressed, we stood there and as each Marine and his family walked passed us, we all said welcome home to each of them, and thanked them for their service. From the company commander on down, each of them in turn thanked "us" for being there for them and their familes........

Toward the end, a former Marine came up to me as I was standing there....tears in his eyes. He didn't have any family there, he just wanted to be there when "his" marines came home. He shook my hand, and said "it wasn't this way when I came back in '70, thank you for seeing that doesn't happen again" . I shook his hand again, and thanked him for his service....and before the shake was over, I said "welcome home Marine, welcome home".

When I got home last night about midnight, I sat for a while and reflected on the evening....and I don't mind telling ya'll I shed a few tears. I also came to a conclusion....all of these missions are emotional, no matter what type it is.

Sorry to ramble, it was just a combination of events last night that sure made me think.
