I had the opportunity to serve under this man. The first time I saw him was for a meritorious Sergeant board. He was an awesome Marine. One thing I can truly say about him after finding this out, is that he loved being a Marine and always stood firm for what he believed in. Before i departed for recruiting duty I wrote him an email thanking him for making me the Marine that I am. I've attached his reply back and hope that you all can truly see what kind of man he truly is:

(the below was written by 1stsgt Mercardante)
Devil Dog,

It was my honor to have served with such a motivated and reliable marine
such as yourself. I will leave you with this;

ALWAYS DO THE RIGHT THING, even when it is not the most popular!

Loyalty is only to the Corps itself not individuals.

NEVER EVER compromise your integrity.

Remember you are a leader that needs to put others in front of self with the
highest degree of integrity and initiative. Take charge and lead by example
from the front!

Semper Fi!

You are the future of our Corps! Take it!

1st Sgt Mercardante, you are so deeply appreciated. Now you stand a hero at heaven's gates; rest easy there, Luke, and know you will never be forgotten here.

Thank you for your service and sacrifice in defending and protecting our freedoms. As a nation we mourn your loss, and we will remember you always as a true American hero. To the family, I offer my prayers and support. I understand a little of what you are going through-my son, a Marine LCpl, was killed in Iraq. I pray wonderful memories of your dear warrior help eventually to ease the pain you endure today. Your hero will never be forgotten-he leaves a legacy of honor and courage that few will ever achieve. 1st Sgt. Luke Mercardante was a true Marine, and a true American hero. Everything I have read about his service and dedication to country and Corps literally defines what a Hero is. How a man dies does not define him. How he lived does. Luke will never be forgotten, and we honor his memory and his life. To Luke's family, you have our most sincere condolances, and you will continue to have our prayers for the Lord's strength and comfort as you deal with this very tragic loss in your lives. May God bless you all.
