First and foremost, Thanks and God Bless all who made this mission a success. It was a beautiful spring day in the Ozarks, as the sound of steel steeds could be heard coming towards Eugene, Missouri from all directions. The BP was a busy place, when I arrived at 0845 with my fellow PGR riders and others. We had refreshments, thanks to Evellyn at the BP and the Noble Eagles Club from Eldon. At approximately 0945 we had a brief ride meeting with Sherriff White of Cole County telling us what was expected for the day and any news he had. At 1015 we departed the BP for the school, a short 1/2 mile or so away. We were greeted by friends of the family and local townfolk who had come early to take up space, so as the unmentionables would not have a place to stand. As we rode into the school parking lot, the honor guard of 8 bikes and a trike took up position to escort Darin on his final mission, the rest formed two lines in the parking lot facing the building. All was well for a while, then word came that the unmentionables were present,
they assembled at the end of the school property and were quickly surrounded by local supporters of Lance Cpl Settle, and the PGR. Soon support was to arrive in the sounds of dual exhaust and the Marine Corp Hynm being played over and over again. This went on for approximately an hour and they unmentionables departed and peace and quiet again returned to the area.About this time God opened the heavens for a 10 second shower of his tears  I went around thanking all for their effort and in maintaining the diginity of the situation. At 1:15 or so we departed the school under police escort for Darin's final ride. It was a 10 mile or so ride to the cemetary where Lance Corporal Darin Settle was layed to rest with full military honors. We presented his parents with the PGR plaque and two flags that had been used in the mission. We left after saying goodbye to all the old and new friends. A special thanks to the members that rode honor guard with us and to all that helped when ask. I could not have done this with out your support. Chris and Lee you were there when I needed your advise and I thank you. A special Thanks to Linda my wife for here support and understanding.  Please mark this mission complete.....................................

I was very proud of my fellow brothers and sisters on this mission.  In spite of very serious provocation, you all conducted yourselves in an appropriate manner, maintaining the highest standards of honor and respect for LCpl Settle and his family.  I think the Patriot Guard Riders were the epitome of an honor guard in every respect.

On the basis of remarks and comments from various local folks - high school vice principal and the sheriff, among others - we were held in high regard and respected for our efforts and our presence in support of the Settle family.  Joe, Lee, and Chris - hats off and a hand salute to you and the rest of the mission PGR leaders for a job well done.

I especially want to thank my fellow riders from the KC area - Dave (Lead Honda GW), Jerry (GW Caboose), Jerry Agar, Mike (VTX), Joe (H-D), and Bob (H-D) - for making this ride as pleasant as this sort of mission can be, under the circumstances.  You guys were great.  I look forward to our continued association in support of our troops.

Attended this mission to honor Lance Cpl. Darin T. Settle on his final mission home, rest in peace Marine, you are a hero to us all and in Gods Hands, God Bless your family.

It was such a privilege and a great honor to be there today standing among my fellow brothers and sisters, Veterans and non-veterans alike, we stood together as one shielding the family from the unmentionables and drowning out their unpatriotic trash with the "USA" chants and the thunder of our exhausts. The show of force displayed by the Patriot Guard Riders and the local community was fabulous. My hat goes off to all for the self-control displayed and the great support everyone gave each other. We all gave honor to a fallen hero on his final mission and gave support and honor to his family. A special thanks to all the law enforcement personnel (STATE AND LOCAL) for their advice, support and control of the situation today. A JOB WELL DONE.

What a great turnout for this mission. I think considering the verbal jeers that were endured we did rather well. I leanrned alot on this mission, made some mistakes, which were gently pointed out and won't be repeated. I'm never too old to learn.

I did want to pass on one short story about one of the local townpeople from Henley. There was an older gentleman standing next to me for a short while that told me he was a Marine and knew Lance Cpl. Settle. He went on to say how nice he was and that Lance was loved by many. During his story another local woman came up with tears in her eyes and said "We can't allow this trash to be here" referring to the unmentionables. The marine took her by the arm and said "who?", The lady looked at him like he was nuts and said "These freaks behind you, with thier horrible signs", the Marine looked the lady dead square in the eye and said "I don't see anyone". It took the woman a second but then it registered, she took a step back, turned her back on the freaks and joined the chant "USA USA USA".

Thank God there are brave men and women like Lance Corporal Darin Settle that have and stand willing to give the ultimate sacrifice so that we can live free.  My deepest condolences to his wife, family and friends.  It was a privilege and honor to attend.

I would also like to comment on the WBC and our interaction with them at the memorial service.  I do not know why these people are really doing this but I do know that when they spew their vile venom and we engage them verbally with insults and profanity it is a win for them and the media is right there to report it, usually with a liberal spin.  Believe me brothers and sisters my blood boils just like yours when I stand next to them with my flag and have to listen trash that comes out of their mouths but I refuse to recognize them or give them the satisfaction of a response to their words.  Our mission is to show respect for the fallen hero and shield the family from these protesters.  If we surround the WBC with bodies and flags, turn our backs to them, make noise when they begin their rhetoric (You gotta love loud pipes!) and absolutely ignore them and their presence, we render them insignificant and impotent.  We will not ever change the way they think and they certainly don't care what we think.  If we take away their "stage", they will soon become old news and maybe the media will get back to the real story, our fallen hero.  Let us never, ever let the WBC walk away thinking they have in even a small way accomplished their twisted and deranged mission.

This was my second mission with the PGR. The first one was in St.Louis on the 21st. It was not interuped by any UG's. The second on was in Henley. I had some doubts about what the PGR was doing. At both I was over come with the suport the PGR got from the family and frends. At Henley a little old lady came up to me and gave me a big hug with tears in her eyes and thanked me/us for comming. This was all the proof I needed to know I was doing the right thing. I will be with the PGR at every mission I can be at.

CG,

Oh yes, I reply to all of the emails I receive. Sometimes it's difficult to find the right words, but I think each person responded to understands the sentimate trying to be conveyed.

Jim,

It was our honor sir, to help you, and the family and community of your son, Darin. The honor was ours and we are proud to have been invited to attend Darin's services. Please know that we are as one, here for you and the community in the future. On behalf of myself and the over 27,000 members of the PGR, our condolences on your loss.

Dear Sirs,
Upon being informed of the death of my son Lance Corp. Darin T Settle in Iraq,of course our life was devastated. The outpouring of support from the community and officials was amazing. After being informed also of the crazy protesters, they would not have been well received in our area.It seemed to me that anyone who could be that insensitive and unpatriotic was simply insane. Then we heard about you folks and that you would be there, and I only thought of more commotion going on at a time we did not need it.I can say now that we were so impressed and proud of your group. The crazies eventually just gave up and left, after injuring a county deputy. And then to see the escort given to my son,I have no words to express my gratitude and pride in your organization. If i can ever be of any help, please let me know as I am now a member.
I would be honoured to help in any way.

Yours Truly,Jim Settle

I just really want to thank you guys for being at the funeral of Darin Settle in Eugene, Missouri on April 22, 2006. I liked the way that you guys handled the protesters. I also hope that you and many other of your riders do this for years to come. I really think that all of the families you guys are there for really appreciate what you guys do for them. I really liked the way that at the cemetery one of you guys gave the family a flag that you got when you were first put on this mission and you also gave them the flag that was on your lead bike with the beads on the flag. At first I heard that you guys were coming and I thought that there would be problems. But after it was said and done you really changed my outlook on motorcycle riders and that most motorcycle groups are very nice. If I didn't send this to the people that were at Darin Settle's funeral, would you please send this to the correct people.

I can't hardly read these comments all the way through anymore because I can't make out the words through my tears. These letters and responses that we get from the people who thank us for doing our missions are overwhelming to me. My heart has never touched so much by some of these comments that I've read. About every time I get on the PGR website and read some of these, I have to wipe my eyes before I can finish reading the comments. What a great organization the PGR group is. I am really lost for the right words to describe how great all of this makes me feel about myself, my country and all of the PGR members. I am so honored and touched by these comments.

I attended this hero's funeral and was very honored to do so.
I was again impressed with the conduct of all of the PGR members and the ride captains who were there. Things got a little intense as to be expected, but the PGR members carried out their mission with respect and honor every step of the way. And they did a great job of blocking out the UGs, too. Well done everyone!

According to the Channel 13 news out of Jefferson City, the MHP is investigating the incident involving the mini van driven by one of the WBC that struck Capt Wheeler of the Cole County Sherriff's Dept. I check on him yesterday and he was doing ok, he was struck in the leg when they departed the area. Again I congratulate the members of PGR and the supporters of Lncpl Settle for your restraint and heart felt compassion. I believe the total count was 110 motorcycles and cages...I spoke with Sgt Olson, the CAO on Sat evening and he said THANKS and God Bless everyone that was there..

So, did anyone get a final bike count? This was also my 2nd mission (in 2 days as well), and I was absolutely thoroughly impressed with the organization and professionalism of the PGR leadership, and how well everyone conducted themselves. What an honor it is for me to ride with you people.

I was also very impressed with the professionalism and cool headedness of the Cole County Sheriff, and all of the other law enforcement people who were there. It was very heartening for me to see Lance Cpl. Settle's immediate family waving so enthusiastically to us as the final journey began. It reassured me that we had done our job without being intruders ourselves in this very painful and private moment for them.

As to the unmentionables, I think that it's crucial that we absolutely don't engage them verbally, but that we block their hate without acknowledging their existance. We fall for their trap whenever we try to reason with or outshout them in verbal battles. The USA and GO BACK HOME chants were great, as of course was the sweet music of open Harley pipes. The Marines Hymn being played loudly was absolutely brilliant - I loved it, as did I think Darin.

As I understand it, we had to let the press in to get their interviews of the unmentionables. I would have liked to have seen a few more loud bikes down there providing continuous noise to ruin any chance of the reporters getting any sound bites at all. Unfortunately, I couldn't help with that. During the procession, I had to watch my Goldwing's tach to tell when to shift. I couldn't begin to hear or even feel my motor running with all the beautiful Harley music going on. That was truly an awesome experience for me.

One final thought on the unmentionables. I feel sorry for them - that they don't recognize or appreciate what a wonderful country and society that they live in, and that they are so hateful of God the father, who has blessed us with these things. They don't realize or understand that they should be thanking people like Darin Settle and many of the rest of us for the freedom to speak and be stupid that they so thoroughly enjoy. I pray for them, that they can rid themselves of the devil, who has completely taken them over and warped their sense of reason and compassion. I fear for them as they will have to answer to the Lord for their actions towards their fellow man.

As I am riding east on I-70 early Saturday morning heading to Eugene, Missouri, I noticed how beautiful the sun was rising from the east. I asked God to pray for Lance Cpl. Darin settle and his family. I also asked God to grant me strength to control my emotions on this day if the unmentionables show up, so I can do my part as a "Patriot Guard Rider" and carry out the mission with dignity and respect.
I missed the briefing meeting due to arriving later at 10:30am, but I joined a few other bikers at the BP-Subway store and we proceeded to go to the high school. The high school was only about a mile away and when we arrived there, I was amazed to see 90 bikes already parked in the parking lot. what a great showing of support for the family.
We stood at attention while the family arrived.
We stood proud with our many flags as other people arrived and went into the high school.
At around 11:00am, the unmentionables arrived.
In a few minutes, I noticed that several PGR members and other non-PGR members had surrounded these people (with their backs to them) and started chanting USA, USA, USA every time they (the unmentionables) would attempt to sing a song or yell out a horrible dispicable phrase. I very quickly joined my PGR brothers and chanted USA, USA, USA. I was overwhelmed, but how proud I felt to be a part of blocking these people from being heard.
A few more minutes passed and a PGR member brought his motorcycle down to the crowd and revved up his bike to make a lot of noise every time the unmentionables would start to say anything or start singing.
At this point, anyone driving by the unmentionables could barely see or hear them.
A few more minutes passed and a couple of people (don't think they were PGR members, maybe townspeople) held up a extremely large American flag that totally blocked the view of the unmentionables from the highway where they were trying to show their dispicable signs. what a great way to block out these people from view!
Standing next to me was a 250 lb. , 6', 3" young man with his back to these people while tears were running down his cheeks. I saw the pain in this man's heart and felt some of it myself. A few minutes later, the unmentionables got into their vans and drove away. They were supposed to be there until noon, but they left a half hour earlier. That part of the mission was done well by the great PGR! Let's not forget the main part of our mission to give supoort and respect to the family. I think we all did that part well, too. God bless Lance Cpl. Darin T. Settle and his family, God bless this great country and god bless the great Patriot Guard Riders !!!
I will be standing by for the next mission.
