***************NOTICE!!! CHANGE IN MISSION PLANS*************

Everyone please note! The time of the parade through Spencer has been moved up to 1545 hrs. The actual departure is still schedule for 1700 hrs. This is important, as the staging time is 1500 hrs. For those who had planned to come at the last minute, please be there no later than 1530 hrs.

Many of the family of the troops may use the FD parking lot if the armory becomes full. Therefore, we may stage next door at the bus lot. Just look for my bike, blue Heritage Softail Classic with the PGR banner on the windshield.

There is also a change in the planned route, but I will announce that at the staging area.

Call or email with any questions.

**********************SENDOFF MISSION UPDATE*****************************
I know many of you have been wondering about new information regarding the Spencer, WV sendoff mission. I have been waiting patiently for a return phone call from the Spencer fire chief to see if we could use his department as a staging area. But unfortunately, he must not be checking the answering machine at the fire department, and I do not have a home number for him.

However, I was able this evening, to finally reach an Assistant Chief, John Greathouse, who said that we are more than welcome to use the department to stage. I really wanted to get this permission, because the fire deparment is directly adjacent to the Armory, which means we will already be in a position to move out when necessary.

So...here are the final plans:
Staging will be at the Spencer-Roane Fire Department in Spencer, WV. We will stage at 3:00 PM, with kickstands up when the troops pull out.

There are plans for a short parade through town, at which time they will transfer to a bus for the remainder of the trip.

Directions to the fire department are as follows:
US 119 Clendenin Exit 19 of I-79. Turn North onto US 119 go approximately 30 miles going through Walton and Gandeeville. Once you get to Spencer you will come to a red-light. Take a right. After making your right turn you will come to another red-light, you will need to go straight through the light and drive approximately 500-700ft. The station will be on your right.

US33 E from Arnoldsburg. If your traveling from Glenville, if your coming South on I-79, you may use Big Otter exit and travel Rt. 16 N towards Arnoldsburg. Once you get to Arnoldsburg take a left at the fork and continue on to Spencer via Rt 33W. Once you hit the City limits of Spencer you need to drive approximately 1/4 mile and the station will be on your left.

US 33 W from Ripley. If your coming from Charleston or Parkersburg via I-77 take the Ripley exit and continue through Ripley approx. 2 miles. Once you get through Ripley, continuing to travel on Rt. 33 E you will travel approximately 25 miles. When you get to the city limits of Spencer, you will drive through the city and drive through a total of 4 red lights. once you get past the 4th red-light the department is approximately 500-700 ft on the right.

Traveling from Left Hand or Wallback via Rt 36 N. Take Rt. 36 North until you get to the intersection of Rt. 36 and US 119. Take a right at the bridge and drive until you get to the first red-light. Once you get to the first red-light take a right and go straight through the 2nd red-light and the department is approximately 500-700 ft on the right.

Traveling from Mineral Wells or Parkersburg via Rt 14 S. Proceed south on Rt. 14. You will drive through Elizabeth and Reedy and on to Spencer. Once you get to the first red-light after reaching Spencer, take a left and drive through a total of 3 red lights. Once you get through the 3rd red-light its approximately 500-700 ft on the right.

These directions were copied directly from the Spencer-Roane Fire Dept. website.

For those of you in OH, who are wanting to ride with the troops as well, I have to apologize that I cannot give you a route or time that they will cross the OH line. This is at the request of those in charge, for security reasons. However, I can tell you that Spencer is only about an hour away from the OH line at Parkersburg, and a little less than that from Ravenswood. If you can do it, you might just want to ride down to Spencer, and continue on with the troops, when we pull off at the state line. Trust me when I say that we appreciate your help escorting these fine men and women further along their route.

If there are an OH ride captains who plan on being a part of this mission, if you would please contact me, we can coordinate further.

One side note: Whether you are coming from the I-79 or I-77 side of Spencer, the roads into town are two lane for many miles. Also, cell service will probably be spotty at best for most of the way when you leave the interstate. Make sure you have the directions, and make any other provisions necessary before you lose contact with the rest of the world.

Remember that there is also a second mission on the same date, as a group of troops will be pulling out from Summersvile, WV and meeting the Spencer contingent in Columbus OH.

We hope to see many of you there. We appreciate your support and efforts. We will pray for safety and good weather for all who participate.

Thank you

Updated 4 Jul 07  1319 edt  S Sturgis

Here is the information that I have so far about the troop send-off on July 21:

We will stage at 3:00 in Spencer. The tentative staging area is at the Spencer VFD, but I am awaiting a return phone call to verify that. I will post verification as soon as I get it. If that does not pan out, there is a WalMart that will work well for staging.

We will move to the Armory around 4:00, assuming we can get near it. We will have to play it by ear that day, and send a scout to the armory to see what the parking situation is. If not, the VFD is very close and will become the permanent location to away the short parade through town.

They will be having a short parade, just to the outside of town. (Spencer isn't a large city). Then the troops will transfer to a bus, which will take them to Columbus, where they will meet with the Summersville group. I have had emails from OH PGR members who wish to either meet the bus at the OH line, or come to Spencer and take them to Columbus. We welcome their participation.

I will post directions on Thursday, or as soon as I get confirmation of the staging area.

We look forward to seeing everyone there!

******************************SENDOFF MISSION UPDATE***************************
As mentioned in the previous post, the Summersville and Spencer sendoffs are now being treated as two seperate missions. This will really have no affect on us, as everyone who can attend on that day would mainly be interested in the information related to the ride of their choice.

I still have not received a return call from the Spencer fire chief regarding staging at their department. As soon as I can pin down that information, I will pass it on to you. Directions to the staging area will follow as soon as I verify the location.

Since we have plenty of notice, and the sendoff is on a Saturday, I hope to see many people participate in this mission.

Thanks again for your efforts.

*******************Last Post***********************
This will be the last post from me prior to the sendoff mission for the troops at Spencer. I pray for good weather, (and the weatherman seems to be cooperating) and safety for all. We hope to see many of you in Spencer Saturday at 1500hrs. Remember that the parade time has been moved up to 1545 hrs. However the departure time is still set for 1700 hrs.

We will be meeting the OH PGR just across the line. Arrangements have been made to contact them before we get to the line, so that they will be ready.

If anyone chooses to ride further into OH, be safe and make your OWN decisions on safety and proper procedure. Also, there is currently no RC for the Summersville contingent. Do not feel obliged to go further than you should.

I will be heading out around noon on Saturday, enroute to Spencer. Anyone who has any questions, call me before noon. Otherwise, leave me a voice mail after that.

Thank you for your support.

************* STAGING AREA FOR THE OHIO PGR**********************************
We will be staging at the Hot Spot at intersection of New Route 33 and Route 124 at 1700 (5:00 pm). This is approx. 4 miles from the WV line. The Hot Spot has food, restrooms and galoline. Please fill up your tanks when you arrive. We will have 10 min. to mount up when we get the notice of the buses crossing into OH. We will escort the buses to the West Side of Columbus. This will be a non-stop trip. If you run short on galoline and have to stop, your part of the escort is complete and have a safe trip home. Please DO NOT TRY TO CATCH the escort after stopping for fuel. This will be dangerous due to the high rate of speed that would be needed to catch-up. We must keep safety in mind first and formost.
When we reach our destination the escort will be complete for the Ohio PGR and you are released to go home. Please ride home as safe as possible so that we will be able to ride together again.

**********USE MAPQUEST FOR MAP INFORMATION*****************

DIRECTIONS

From the Cleveland area follow route 77 south into WV to where it intersects with Route 33 West. Follow RT 33 West approx. 4 miles after crossing into OH. The Hot Spot will be on your Right at intersection RT 33 and RT 124.

From the Dayton area take Route 70 East to 270 South/East till it intersects with RT 33 South. Follow RT 33 south to where it turns into RT 33 and RT 7. Follow RT 33 South. You will pass a town named Rolandus. At this time watch for the intersection of RT 33 and RT 124. The Hot Spot will be on your left at this intersection. Ride safe and see you there.

I was really impressed with the send-off that the town of Spencer put on for these troops, and I was very honored to be but a small part of their send-off and escort. I peeled off West of of Athens, OH, and there were a few other PGR members who were going to go on through to Columbus. I'm home safe and sound, and here's hoping that all of these fine soldiers make it home safe and sound at the end of their tour. May God bless all of them and their families. Jerry Bayha

Mission Complete. The troops and the families were very appreciative of our participation along with just about the whole city of Summersville. Thanks to a good sized contingent from Pittsburgh and a large number of local non PGR members. We had a good sized escort.

***************ALL PLANNING TO ATTEND TAKE NOTICE!*****************

Due to our inability to get a CONFIRMED Ride Captain from Ohio for this portion of the mission, all those who have made plans to either escort the unit from Summersville or meet along the way, there has been NO staging area set up nor any "concrete" plans made beyond the border.

I am asking ALL to use your own best judgement, keeping your safety and those riding alongside you first and foremost in your mind.

If you have any questions or concerns, get in touch with me (304) 455-4036 or my cell (304) 588-1278 or contact the WV RC in charge of this mission.  If calling me, try the home number first.  Call me PRIOR to 0700 tomorrow as I'll be leaving for our Mission of Honor for Capt Adams at that time.

We are committed to giving these troops the Send-Off they deserve.

Just as an FYI, I have talked to Bob and Joe about the Spencer half of the sendoff for July 21. I will be the RC for this mission. This week I have been hammered with "end of the quarter and fiscal year" stuff at work. However, on Monday I will be starting to work closely with the contacts for the Spencer sendoff, as well as Bob, and contacts from OH to make firm plans.

I apologize for making everyone wait for information, but I appreciate your patience.

Count me onboard for this escort mission...Good Lord willin'...and if the creeks don't get to high....I would consider it an HONOR to be part of this mission to help give these Hero's a proper send-off, and will volunteer to be part of the Spencer group escort.....I have a set of 10' tall flags (1-US & 1-PGR flag) that I fly on the back of my scooter for events like this, and would be VERY PROUD to fly them for these young men and women.......Joe, if there is anything extra that I can do to help, please feel free to contact me directly.... DEPLOYMENT OF THE 821st Engineering Co. Summerville,WV

We will be standing a flag line and escorting 2 busses carrying the troops from Summersville.  NOTE: We are hoping a contingent from OHIO will pickup the escort at a designated point.  I plan to do so until this old body starts to wear down.

DATE: – Saturday, July 21st,2007

SCHEDULE:

1030 hours - Staging will be on approach road to Armory. I will be there by 1000 hours. NOTE: Bring something to keep your kickstand from sinking.

1100 hours – Form flag line. You will need a 3’X 5’ flag or you can make “friendly sign addressed to the troops and family” to display. (Flags preferred)

1230 hours – Close flag line.

1330 hours – Ride Briefing

1400 hours - Departure

LODGING: This is a resort area. So anyone planning to come the night before should make reservations early. Sleep Inn 304-872-4500 has offered a discounted rate of $66.26 per night + tax, and will keep this rate open until midnight 7/7. Super 8 Motel 304-872-4888 offered a discounted rate of $53.88 + tax this rate is good until they run out of rooms. To get rate mention “Patriot Guard” when booking. Both easy to locate from US 19.

DIRECTIONS: Use “Map Quest”, GPS or the old fashioned paper map for directions to Summersville, WV.

***** 100 bikes, trikes and cages escorting this group would look AWESOME *****

Since I have plenty of notice on this one I will plan to attend. It is on a Saturday, which will allow me to work on my schedule so I have no conflicts. Although it is always sad to see them go, I think it is important to show our support.
(I MUCH prefer to welcome them home! :-))

When the time gets closer, anyone who wants to ride down with me, feel free to let me know.

I wish to thank the 821st Engineering Company, their family members and friends for inviting the Patriot Guard Riders to participate in this Send Off. What a honor and privilege it was to support the state of West Viragina and be part of this send off! Even though it was a sad day to see these soldiers depart, it was a joyous day to the see support that their friends and neighbors gave them. I think the entire town came out to say so long. Again, I wish each and everyone a fast and safe tour. As I said when I shook as many hands as I could, I will see you on your return trip. God bless to all.

Jerry Bayha

***************MISSION COMPLETE**************

The mission to send off the 821st Engineering Unit from Spencer, WV is now complete. Following are some notes from the mission:

Overall the mission went very well. Other than a few obstacles in planning, it went smooth. I was honored to see the support that the troops had from the community of Spencer. There were hundreds, if not more, family members, friends, and other citizens lining the streets to see the men and women pass by on a flatbed truck. We were led by two horses with flags, as well as state, county and city police.

The Spencer fire dept. graciously allowed us the use of their parking lot for the staging area. Art Boggs, who was my contact in Spencer was a huge help.

We had 13 bikes for the escort, with 4 being from OH, 1 from Atlanta, GA and the rest from WV. I hope everyone received stickers. If we missed anyone, I apologize. I would also like to thank those who contributed to the cost of the stickers. That money will be forwarded to Joe, who paid for them out of his pocket.

While this was a MUCH brighter mission, than the ones we are usually a part of, it was still very touching to watch families give their last goodbyes in the parking lot of the Dairy Queen, with the band playing patriotic music in the background. We watched as men and women said goodbye to spouses, mothers and fathers cried as sons and daughters got on the bus, parents gave babies one last hug, and kids waved as mommy or daddy sat down by the window, straining for one last look.

There were TV stations from Parkersburg and Charleston, as well as the Spencer and Parkersburg newpapers. You might find articles about the sendoff online on any of those news media websites.

We followed the bus from Spencer to Ripley, so the bus could set the pace. Once we got on the interstate, we passed the bus and took the lead, through Ravenswood, across the OH river and into OH. There, we picked up Tom, with the OH PGR. A few miles later, four of us peeled off to head back. Thanks to Jerry Bayha for taking the lead from that point on.

Two of us, Jerry from Atlanta, and myself, along with my wife, were THIS CLOSE I I to making the decision to go all the way to Wisconsin, at the spur of the moment. The only that that prevented me was our six year at home with a babysitter. For some reason, following them to WI just seemed like the right thing to do at the time. But alas, we had to turn around.

On our way back to the WV line, we passed the bus convoy from Summersville. They were less than ten minutes behind the Spencer bus. We stopped in Ravenswood for some grub, and had a good time of conversation with Jerry from Atlanta, Kim and John from Philippi, Bruce and Chris from Fairmont, and myself and Carol.

I love riding, obviously, and I love riding with many other bikes. But there are some from the PGR whom I consider good friends, and riding with a few good friends, makes the best ride of all. And when you consider why we were there, it was one of the best rides we have had in a long time.

Now...when they come home, that will be the BEST ride of all!

Thank each and every one of you for being there, for showing your support, and for simply being who you are as an active member of the PGR.

For both the Spencer and Summersville portions of this mission, I wish to extend my thanks and deepest respects to Barry and Bob for the tireless jobs they did in setting this up.  Thank you, too, to all those who took time from their lives to show these  brave men and women how much we support them as they prepare for extended time away from their families and friends.

Special "Thank You" goes out to our brothers and sisters in Ohio and Wisconsin who are making every effort to lead these troops safely in to Ft. McCoy.

Now, as the WV State Captain, it is my responsiblity to ensure all our missions go off as smoothly as possible and, although through no fault of Bob or myself, I offer my sincere apologies to all those members who expressed a desire to meet the Summersville unit along I-64, only to learn hours later that their itinerary had been changed at the last moment.  We were operating at the mercy of those in charge of these troops and had no control over the route change, nor did Bob have the opportunity to call those affected by this change.  For this reason, I'm sorry to say that any future Send-Off missions we are asked to participate in will be done only up to the point of departure, not including escort, unless we receive guarantees the route will not be changed.  Our number one concern is the safety and welfare of our members and, in my mind, sitting along a busy Interstate highway for over 3 hours on a Saturday afternoon does not meet that criteria.

Again, please accept my apologies for any/all glitches that may have occured during these missions.

May God watch over each and every member of the 821st EC and return them safely to West Virginia soil.
Respects,
Joe
