16 Jun 2007 11:54 AM Alert

There will be a fundraising event in Moundsville, WV, on June 30, 2007 at the  Dollar Tree Store, located in the old Ame's Shopping Plaza,  to benefit our troops and also to recognize the Veterans in the Tri-State area.

We have been asked to attend and to participate. This will include a ride in formation to the store from a rendezvous point with flags mounted on the bikes. There is also a planned helicopter from the WVANG. The benefit is sponsored by "Boatsie's Boxes", a non-profit organization that supports the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

This event will run from 1130 to approximately 1600 on that day, with our group. Details regarding our meeting point and time are being worked out and will be posted ASAP.

Anyone able to attend this most important function will be greatly appreciated. A thread will be started for those attending to obtain further information and to respond so we will have a rough idea of the number of attendees. Your RC for this mission will be Ron Jones ( Ron1ok). I will be working closely with Ron and Ultraclassic, our SC on this mission.

From Ron Jones, RC for this event:

*************ITINERARY UPDATE********************

As it stands now: I have secured a staging area at John Marshall High School, 1300 Wheeling Ave.,Glen Dale, WV, 26038, at 12:45 , ride briefing at 1:00 and depart for our destination at 1:15.

We will be leading some type of military vehicles with police escort to the Dollar Tree parking lot.

I would like everyone attending to find some way to secure a 3 x 5 flag to their vehicle, or have someone riding with you holding it. The community loves this display.

Once we reach the Dollar Tree we will flank the "stage area" with our flags while the local troops and veteran are recognized, then we can "mingle" with the people and answer any questions if we want. There will be raffle drawings, 50/50 drawings, and numerous items for sale. Donations are also being accepted. There will also be a Blackhawk helicopter on display for those who have never seen one.

This is going to be a nice, worthwhile event to attend and anyone is welcome to join in. Please get the word out to anyone who would want to ride with us as they are quite welcome. CW4 McClure stressed again that WE ARE the opening ceremony, so an impressive turnout by us would be awesome.

Ride safe, Ron J.

The following article appears in today's edition of the Wheeling Intelligencer:

Special Ceremony To Honor Military

By Jim Cochran

A special recognition ceremony will take place at 1:30 p.m. June 30 near the Moundsville Dollar Tree in the Busy Beaver parking lot in Moundsville to honor military personnel.

The ceremony will include The Patriot Guard Riders, the Moundsville Honor Guard, the Junior West Virginia ROTC, along with commanders of American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars from the tri-ttate, and members of these two organizations.

In addition, all military persons who have served or are currently serving are invited to attend.

“I want to encourage all military men and women to this “Operation Beat the Heat,” states Gail “Boatsie” Van Vranken. These individuals are to call her at (304) 232-5277 or via e-mail at boatsievv@aol. com in order to be given special recognition.

Van Vraken is the founder of Wheeling based Boatsie’s Boxes, Inc., a nationally recognized 501@3 non-profit Charitable Corporation, partnered with the Defense Department’s “America Supports You.”

Saturday Boatsie’s Boxes is teaming up with the Moundsville Dollar Tree in this fund-raising effort, the event to be from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The afternoon’s festivities will also include a display of a Black Hawk Helicopter, an Air Force Mini F-22 Jet and an 18-foot submarine.

There will be a picture display of photos sent by troops from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Hot dogs, soft drinks and popcorn will be available for purchase, along with T-shirts, hats, bracelets and baked goods.

There will be face painting and balloons for youngsters, along with a clown who will entertain.

Raffle tickets will be sold for six prize packages, along with a 50/50 drawing. Drawings will take place at 4 p.m. Raffle details are available on the Web site www.boatsie.comhomepage/news/events/PDF file.

There will be collection boxes for monetary and supply donations, as Van Vraken said because of the 140 degree temperatures, such comfort items like Neck Coolers, Misty Mates, nose spray, wet wipes, sun block, foot products, eye drops, body wash and hand sanitizers are needed and will be sent to the military personnel.

Already, the Moundsville and New Martinsville Dollar Tree stores have sold more than $165,000 worth of these items which have been sent to service men and women.

Sorry I, personally, will be unable to attend this very worthwhile event.  It is my sincere hope that we have a great turnout for such a good cause.
Respects,
Joe
