27 May 2007 7:17 AM Alert

Updated 29 May 07 1641cdt Aranel

*********UPDATED INFORMATION*********

Just spoke w/Ron who is at work and unable to make postings at this time and want to provide some updated information on this Mission of Honor for Deputy Meyer.

Ron's family has nothing but the highest praise for the Patriot Guard Riders and what we do.  They wish us to be an "integral part" of his final services.

Although previously announced that there would be no escort at the conclusion of services, the family has requested that we participate in the procession from Kepner Funeral Home to the Valley Grove Community Center, a distance of approximately 10 miles.  At their request, we will take a position behind the family vehicle, ahead of the Blue Knights and Red Knights, for this most solemn journey.  Although we have been invited to attend the wake at the Community Center, as is our practice, we have respectfully declined so as not to interfere with their grieving process.

Although not yet confirmed, Ron is attempting to obtain permission for us to stage at the Tractor Supply Company, 6 Elm Grove Crossing Mall, Wheeling, WV  26003 (304-238-0050).  As previously stated, staging time will be 0900, ride briefing approximately 0920 and KSU @ 0930 so as to arrive at the funeral home NLT 0945.  Directions to TSC can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/34pe6e.

Current weather forecast for the Wheeling area is for Wednesday night low's around 60 with Thursday being sunny and temperatures in the mid-80's with light winds.  Please dress accordingly and have fluids on hand if possible.  We will be maintaining a flag line vigil in excess of two hours.

Continue monitoring this thread for updated information as it becomes available.  Thank you, all, for your interest in standing for Deputy Meyer and for your support.
Respects,
Joe

*********************ITINERARY CHANGE*************************

Due to the anticipated enormity of Deputy Meyer's services, the funeral has been moved from Kepner Funeral Home, across the street to St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church, 141 Kruger St., Wheeling, WV  26003 (304-242-3466).  Directions to here may be viewed at: http://www.stmarkluth.com/map1.html.

Again, to accomodate the amount of visitors expected to pay their final respects to Ron and his family, Thursday's visitation schedule has been moved up to 0900 instead of the originally posted 1000.  Visitation vigil will be maintained at the funeral home during the period from 0900-1115 after which we will move our flag line across the street to St. Mark's, in preparation for the services.

BECAUSE OF THIS CHANGE, STAGING TIME WILL NOW BE 0800, PRE-RIDE BRIEFING AROUND 0820 AND KSU @ 0830.

Staging location has now been CONFIRMED as previously posted.

The funeral director also has told Ron that all escorts, parking and flag line locations are being handled by the local LEO's.  We will follow their lead and instructions so as to minimize confusion.

While this will have no effect on our ability to carry out our planned mission, there is a possibility that the procession will NOT be going to the Valley Grove Community Center as previously stated.  Attempts are now being made to secure the White Palace at Wheeling Park High School, located in Oglebay Park (http://www.oglebay-resort.com/wheelingpark/directions.htm).  Confirmation of this may not occur until the morning of the services but, again, will have no direct bearing on what we are to do.

Any other updates or changes will be posted immediately.  We do apologize for having to make these changes but, as the funeral director has stated, this is the largest service they've ever handled.

Thank you for your diligence and patience.
Respects,
Joe

Sorry for the late posting as my computer decide to give up the ghost.  Joe, thankfully, took up my slack.  Here  is what we know as of right now:

Deputy Meyer's son, Zack, is now in the air.  The services we will attend, so far, are scheduled for Thurday, May 31, at Kepner's funeral home.  The address is below in Joe's posting.  Staging will be around 09:00 with site to be designated by tomorrow night.  We will NOT be escorting Deputy Meyer to his final resting place as he will be cremated.  We will stand a flag line before 10:00.  The service is at 12:00. Upon completion of the service, Deputy Meyer will be taken from the funeral home for his final wish.  Please follow this thread for more updates as I get them.

This man's passing is a big loss to this and other communities in the surrounding area.  Everbody around here knew who Ron Meyer was, so, let's give this fine officer the very best we have to offer.

                                                                                                                Ride safe,

                                                                                                                 Ron J.

****PENDING MISSION - RON MEYER, OCSO, TRIADELPHIA, WV****

Ohio County Sheriff's Office Deputy Ron Meyer, 48, of Triadelphia, WV, lost his life on Saturday, 26 May 2007, in an ATV accident near his home.

Ron was a valued member of the OCSO, serving as the school resource officer for Wheeling Park High School.

His son is currently deployed to the Sandbox as a member of the 150th Aviation Unit of the WV Air National Guard.

Attempts are being made to establish contact with the funeral home that will be handling arrangements so we may offer our services.  Although not positive, it is anticipated that we will be welcome to stand in Honor and Respect of Deputy Meyer as his family is very aware of who we are and what we do from our interaction with them during the Send-Off mission for the 150th.

More information on this can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/37cedh and http://tinyurl.com/3y668a.

Ron Jones, WV ASC, will be the assigned Ride Captain for this mission.

Please track this thread for updates as they become available.

Respects,

Joe

I knew Ron and wanted to share this with you all. This guy was always an "above and beyond" kind of guy. This I know from personal experience. He did some stuff for me that I never asked for and definitely did not expect. For this, Ron, I thank you, big guy. He was always out in the community trying to find ways to make it better. Kids around here held the utmost respect for Ron, 'cause he always gave them the respect they were looking for. He was a big catalyst for the D.A.R.E. program around here and was it's biggest supporter. You knew you could always count on Ron gettin' back to you if you needed him. Last summer, his son was deployed to the Sandbox with the 150th AAB. Ron was proud to ride with us (PGR) as we did a send-off mission. In fact, Ron, rode right beside me, and had the biggest grin the whole time. He was overwhelmed with our efforts and couldn't wait for his son to return so we could do their welcome home mission. He asked me about this a couple times. He was an avid rider and loved the PGR. These are not "cliche" words. I knew this man and everything you hear about him is true. To say he will be missed is too small for what we will feel. Ron, I'm gonna miss ya. We'll take care of Zack for ya, big guy, so rest. You definitely deserve it. Ride safe, Ron J.
