TROOP SEND-OFF; 111TH ENG BN, ELEANOR, WV; 10 JUN 2007

I have received confirmation of the deployment date for the 111th Engineering Batallion of the West Virginia Army National Guard as they prepare for a 12-month tour of duty in the Sandbox.

They are scheduled to depart Eleanor, WV on Sunday, 10 June 2007 and PGR attendance is requested.

Although all the details have yet to be worked out, it is expected that we will be asked to provide an escort as this unit travels to Yeager Airport in Charleston, WV.

More information should be forthcoming within the next couple of days but I am asking all who are able to lend your support to these brave men and women as they prepare for an extended period away from their families.

Please follow this thread for more updates as they are known.

Time remains uncertain right now.  Am awaiting a call from a member of the Family Assistance Group, but it is "guesstimated" to be between 0800-1000 for a staging time.

Still trying to find a RC for this mission.  When that is established, he'll be posting information.

Joe

22 May 2007 6:40 AM Alert
Just spoke with Capt. Mullins who advises the departure date WILL BE 10 JUNE 2007.  As is generally the case when working with any military, the time being discussed for departure from Charleston's Yeager Airport, 100 Airport Road - Suite 175,  Charleston, WV  25311,   304-344-8033, (http://tinyurl.com/2r4w3u) is anywhere from 1000 on.  Capt Mullins will be requesting an early afternoon departure to Fort McCoy, however.

IF the military is insistent on a mid-morning departure from Yeager, we will NOT be providing escort from Eleanor as the unit will be required to arrive at the airport at least 2 hours prior to flight time.  This would mean a departure from Eleanor around 0700-30 which, in my mind, would require those wishing to be there and traveling a long distance to acquire a room for the night in order to make a sunrise staging time.  IF this is their plan, she will be working, today, to obtain permission for us to meet the unit as they are arriving at Yeager to escort them to their check-in area and then on to the tarmac.  She will also ask permission for any of our members coming in cages to be permitted to board the unit/family buses for transport into the airport as parking is somewhat limited.

IF she is successful in getting an early afternoon departure time, we WILL meet at the WV ARNG base, 111 Army-Navy Drive, Red House, WV 25168 (
http://tinyurl.com/2m4xoe).  This is an "open post"  so entrance will not be an issue, WITH PROPER IDENTIFICATION.  A meeting/staging time will be provided when their departure time is known.  We will provide an escort to Yeager Airport for the unit and their families.

To add one more "wrinkle" to this Send-Off Mission, there IS a slight possibility that the military will insist this unit be bused to Fort McCoy, WI instead of flying.  While Capt Mullins will do all she can to prevent that from happening, as we all know, if this is what the government wants, that is what the government will get.  In the event this occurs, I have asked her to obtain permission for us to provide an escort through West Virginia and will ask neighboring states to pick up their convoy at the state line(s) to provide a continued escort to their destination.

I do want to apologize for all the 'variables' I've put here, but did want to provide an update for those that wish to show support to these brave men and women.  Although I'm not at liberty to provide exact numbers, this unit will have OVER 100 members that will be deploying.

Please continue watching this thread for more information.  According to Capt Mullins, she will be meeting with airport personnel and other military members today in an effort to get more definitive information.  Once I receive it, I will post immediately.

Respects,
Joe

To pass on a bit of information we have received, the unit will be departing Eleanor for Charleston at 1000 on 10 June.  In order for us to provide the necessary, requested escort, we will be staging NLT 0830.

It has been confirmed the unit will be traveling by air to Fort McCoy but, as of this posting, we have yet to receive permission to enter the base at Yeager.

Bob (Treygoose) Smith is the assigned RC for this mission and has been working very hard to keep us in the loop for this departure.  He is also working diligently to obtain permission for us to enter the base for their ultimate departure.

For anyone desiring to travel in on Saturday in preparation for the early staging time, Bob has secured discounted motel rates at the Days Inn in Teays Valley, WV for $40.00 per night plus tax.  Motel is located at Putnam Village Drive, I-64 & ST 34 at Exit 39, Teays, WV, 25569
304-729-3006. Directions to the Days Inn are available at: http://tinyurl.com/2x66rp.  Mention the Patriot Guard Riders or PGR when calling for reservations.

Bob will be posting staging location shortly.

Thank you to all for continuing to monitor this thread.  We do apologize for the lack of information but we have been operating at the mercy of the government.  Additional information will be posted as soon as possible.
Respects,
Joe

They are gone! The families have returned to their homes without those who stand up for us and they're terribly missed already! Even I miss many of them because during the planning & execution of this mission I was privileged to meet many of the soldiers and family members............What a fine group of folks!! Then there are the riders (about 70 to 75) from not just the PGR but other groups as well!! The StateTroopers and local police departments that helped with our safe passage. Then the VFW, American Legion and AmVets providing the food, what a great bunch. "Damn I am Proud to be an American".........

Home safe and sound about an hour ago.  Have to echo what Bob says about the 'empty feeling' after seeing the entire unit, but also some we have grown personally attached to, being placed in harm's way while helping to ensure each and every one of us continues to live a life of freedom.

Participation from each and every rider, from the PGR, CMA, Moose Riders, Blue Knights, KC HOG Chapter. Star  Riders and anyone I may have inadvertantly missed was tremendously appreciated by those deploying and their families.

In the meeting Bob and I had with General Tackett, today, we heard many comments about great it was to be given an escort and send-off.  While it may not have been done the way we normally do these, the fact that we were there and appreciated makes it all worthwhile.  Hopefully, an outcome of our meeting will make it much easier to continue to do this in the future, for as long as we have men and women being deployed to protect us, we must continue to stand for them to show just exactly how much we appreciate what they will be doing for the next few months of their lives.

Thank you 111th!  We will anxiously await your safe return home and be proud to give you a "Hero's Welcome"!  Stay safe.  May God watch over each  one of you, and every other man and woman currently deployed.
Respects,
Joe
