******************************MISSIONCOMPLETE***********************************
The weather started out cold for riders this morning, as low as 33 degrees in some places. We met for breakfast at the local Shoney's, then went to the staging area, at the University Towne Centre. We had 20 brothers and sisters from WV, PA and NY in attendance. Some left as early as 2:00 this morning to get here. We are thankful for their participation. We may have picked up a few new members today as well.
We were escorted to the church by the Morgantown Police Dept. There we met with several top brass from the 82nd Airborne division and the Pentagon, who all expressed their appreciation for our services. The governor of the great State of West Virginia was also in attendance. There was additional support from the Monongalia County Sheriff's Dept. WV State Police and Morgantown Police Dept. Luckily there were no unwanted visitors.
We met Daniel's widow during the visitation services, and presented her with the PGR plaque. She was very emotional. We were also privileged to meet Daniel's mother and father. No matter how many of these I do, I'll never get used to seeing the grief on the faces of the family of those we are there to honor. Daniel and his wife had been married for less than a year when he died, and they were together for only six months before he shipped out. What a great sacrifice by not only Daniel, but his wife, parents and the rest of his family and friends.
We were honored to be a part of the services. Thank you again to all who posted condolences or participated in the services. Pictures of the mission will be posted later today and tomorrow.
RIP Spc. Daniel F. Mehringer.
Ready to serve,

***************************MISSION UPDATE*************************** *************************STAND DOWN ON ESCORT FROM AIRPORT*********
First let me say that I sincerely apologize for the confusion surrounding this mission. The family has been through a lot and is understandably very upset. This has made it somewhat hard to pin down their wishes as far as PGR participation is concerned. However, following are FIRM plans.
First, the WV State Police are going to handle any issues with unwanted visitors at the airport tomorrow. We are standing down on that part of the mission. This will not change.
Second, we will be providing honor guard services at the funeral on Monday morning. The only visitation scheduled is from 9:30 to 11:30, just prior to the funeral services. Funeral is at 11:30. There will be no procession to the cemetary, so we will not be providing escort services.
The staging area will be at the University Town Center, located just off of the I-79 Star City Exit. This is exit 155, which is the last exit in WV going north, or the first exit if you are coming south. Coming south, turn left off of the exit. IF you are headed north, bear to the right. Turn RIGHT at the first stoplight. Proceed past several restaurants, to the top of the hill. We will be staging in the shopping center parking lot, to the left of the access road, just before WalMart.
We will begin staging at 8:30, with kickstands up at 9:00.
There is a Shoney's near the staging area. I will be there at approximately 7:45 if anyone would like to meet for breakfast. To get to the Shoney's, after getting off of I-79, go through three lights. Proceed up the hill. Shoney's is half way up the hill, on the left.
I will post more later, with motel info etc.
Again, I apologize for the amount of confusion.

************************URGENT MISSION NOTICE************************ ***********************POSSIBLE SHORT NOTICE MISSION****************** ***********************MISSION CONFIRMATION**************************
I just got off of the phone with the sister of SPC Daniel Mehringer. She is speaking for her mother, who understandably is having difficulty dealing with issues right now. We DO HAVE A CONFIRMED MISSION for the funeral services on Monday. I will post times, staging locations and directions by the end of the day. We will be providing honor guard services outside of the church, before, during and after the services. There will be no procession to a cemetary.
SECOND IMPORTANT ISSUE...although we have already decided to stand down on providing escort from the airport to the funeral home on FRIDAY, the family now believes that they would like for us to be there. I will CONFIRM this within the hour. They have expressed fears because of rumours of unwanted guests, both at the airport and at the church on Monday. Hopefully, I will be able to confirm or lay to rest those rumors by the end of the day as well.
By 3:30 PM today, (Thursday) I will post another notice confirming SHORT NOTICE MISSION to the Morgantown Municipal Airport, tomorrow at 1:00 PM. I advised the family that they needed to make this decision ASAP, as we would not be able to get many participants on any shorter notice. They promised to call back as soon as possible.
Continue to watch the thread, especially later this afternoon, and tomorrow morning for more info as it becomes available.

*******************UPDATE********************
As posted earlier, we have set mid-afternoon today (Thursday) as the deadline to confirm this mission. As Joe mentioned in a previous post, I also apologize for the confusion. We originally thought we had a definite confirmed mission to provide tribute to SPC Mehringer. However, things seem to be changing almost hourly. Joe and I have both sent emails to the father of SPC Mehringer, expressing our thoughts and prayers. We also let him know that we stand ready if requested to provide tribute, but at the same time, we do not activate if the family does not desire for us to be there.
I realize that some of you have indicated your intent to travel from as far away as New York and Virginia should this come to fruition, and that you need as much time as possible to prepare. That is why we have made 2:00 today a deadline.
If we have no confirmation by that time, we will stand down. We will still pay tribute to SPC Mehringer via the website thread. I know from reading the post, that Daniels father is reading and appreciates the expressions from members nationwide. Thank you for your patience and service.
Barry Bledsoe, RC Fairmont, WV 304-692-6900 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Updated - 03 May 07 0808 ET - PGRLabLuvr
Folks, I understand the needs and desires of all who have expressed a willingness to stand for Spc Mehringer and his family to have the necessary information provided as soon as possible to make their plans.
Please know this; our Ride Captains are working diligently to get the information we all are looking for but, short of forcing ourselves upon this grieving family, their hands are tied.
As the CAO stated, Daniel's Mother will not stop anyone who shows up at the airport on Friday, but, since we have not received an official invitation to provide escort, we will NOT be doing so as the PGR.
If Barry has not heard from the CAO by 1400 today (Thursday), he will call him back and if they are still leaning toward rescinding the invitation to participate in his final services, we will Stand Down from the mission.
As is always the case, we do only what the family wishes or, as may be the case here, what they do not wish.
I thank you for your patience and diligence and hope all understand the situation we are dealing with here.
Respects, Joe
*********************************************************************
****************THIS IS NOW A CONFIRMED MISSION*******************
I spoke with the CAO this afternoon and PGR participation IS invited and welcomed by the family of Spc Mehringer.
At the present time, all that is known for sure is that services will be held Monday, May 7 in St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church, 1 Guthrie Lane, Morgantown, WV 26508 (304) 296-5353. Time of services has yet to be established but more information should be available this evening.
CWO Harbison advises Daniel will be returning home via charter jet to Morgantown Municipal Airport, 100 Hart Field Road, Morgantown, WV on Friday, May 4, 2007. PGR particiipation in escorting Daniel to the funeral home may be requested but, again, I should know more this evening.
As a sidenote, Daniel's Father, Howard, is very military oriented, being a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam conflict.
Continue watching this thread for more information as it becomes available.
Respects, Joe

Contact made with Casualty Assistance Office @ Fort Bragg. They advise Daniel's arrangements are being handled by the office in Fort Knox, KY. As Fort Bragg is very much aware of who we are and what we do, they are contacting Fort Knox to have them get in touch with me ASAP. Will post more information as it becomes available.
A WV PGR member has a very good friend who is close to this family. She informed me the family has been told it COULD be a week before Daniel is returned to American soil, although as we all know, that is not etched in stone. As his passing was non-combat related, the military is conducting an investigation.
Please continue monitoring this thread for updates as they become available.
Thank you for your diligence and continued support. Respects, Joe |
