Tucker grad killed in Iraq Jeremy Ehle, 19, had only recently arrived in combat zone
BY JULIAN WALKER AND OLYMPIA MEOLA TIMES-DISPATCH STAFF WRITERS Apr 4, 2006
A J.R. Tucker High School graduate serving in Iraq died Sunday from wounds suffered in combat, according to the U.S. Department of Defense. Pfc. Jeremy W. Ehle, 19, of Henrico County was killed in Hit, Iraq, when his "dismounted patrol came under enemy small-arms fire during combat operations," the Defense Department said in a news release. Ehle, who graduated from Tucker in 2005, had only recently arrived in Iraq, his fiancée, Kathryn Holmes, told The Times-Dispatch last night. "He called me two weeks ago and told me he was fine," a sobbing Holmes said during a brief phone interview. Holmes described her betrothed as a quiet, unassuming young man who was a talented artist and enjoyed rock music, particularly Pink Floyd. "He didn't like attention. He didn't like to make arguments, but he wasn't passive," she said. "He was just one of those people who you either really liked or didn't like, and most people liked him." According to his profile posted on myspace.com, Ehle enlisted last August. Ehle -- assigned to the U.S. Army's 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division -- had been stationed in Friedberg, Germany, until leaving for Iraq last month, said Holmes, 18. He intended to serve 5 years in the military and was taking correspondence courses at the University of Maryland, she said. Holmes said the couple planned to wed when he was scheduled to return in nearly a year. Ehle and Holmes met while students at Tucker, she said, noting that he came to the school as an 11th-grader after surviving a tumultuous family situation as a youth. When told of the death last night, James O'Dwyer, a retired Marine lieutenant colonel who serves as the senior military instructor at Tucker's JROTC program, recalled Ehle as a student who persevered and viewed a military career as a path to success. "He was a good kid who wanted to move ahead in life," O'Dwyer said. "He didn't have a lot of the advantages other kids had." Ehle's obstacles included living in a group home while completing high school, his fiancée said. O'Dwyer said Ehle "was a fine young man who wanted to serve his country."
