21 Mar 2007 6:10 PM Alert
Updated 23 Mar 07  1943 edt  S Sturgis

Final itinerary remains pretty much the same as the updated itinerary.  No new information to pass along.  The weather forecast seems to be a mix of sun and rain, so two wheels or cage is a matter of safety to each individual.

Again, staging is at 11:15 hours with ride briefing at 11:30.  Finer details will be at this time.  There will be a PGR member at the entrance of FORT AVE. to direct you to the staging area.  The funeral director, as well as some RC's and SC's will be on hand to assist in parking the bikes and cages.   Joe Cumblidge, our SC, (ultraclassic), will be there if you have any questions before I get there.

Reminder:  The cemetery has small, less than favorable for bikes, type paving, although it is blacktop.  If you are not comfortable riding in formation,(staggered), please feel free to cage it.

Please use extreme caution and care with safety in mind while we honor this special soldier and fine man.

                                                                                                                           Ride safe,
                                                                                                                            Ron J.

______________________________________________________________________________

John R. Hefner Sr., 78, of Keyser, W.Va., and formerly of Jamestown 1607, Williamsburg, Va., died Sunday, March 18, 2007, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md. Mr. Hefner was a retired U.S. Army veteran with 27 years of service with Special Forces in Vietnam, Korean Conflict, Alaska, Washington State, Germany, Philippines, Japan, Virginia, Texas and California.  Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 23, at the Markwood Funeral Home, Keyser. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 24, with the Rev. James A. McCune officiating. Interment will follow in Queen's Point Cemetery, Keyser. Full military honors will be accorded at the cemetery.

PGR participation in Mr. Hefner's services has been requested by his son, John, Jr. We have been asked to stand vigil during the services and provide motorcycle escort to his final rest.  I have assured John that we will do whatever we can to afford the Honor and Respect his Father has earned. I am attempting to secure a Ride Captain in this area to head up this mission. In the event I am unsuccessful, I will be returning from ANC late Friday or early Saturday and will head this myself.

Expect staging time to be in the neighborhood of 1115-1130 on Saturday, 24 March and to be in the flag line NLT 1200.

More information will be posted as soon as it becomes known.  As this is a fairly remote area of West Virginia, participation from surrounding states would be most welcomed.

Respects,

Joe

Funeral home is located at 111 S. Mineral St., Keyser, WV on U.S. route 220.  Travelling North on 220, it is on your right; on your left if travelling South.

Conversation with director indicates there is a "huge" parking lot at the old school located directly behind the funeral home.  This will be good for staging purposes.  As stated earlier, staging time will be 1130 with briefing to follow at 1145.  Flags will be up NLT 1200.  All bikes shall remain in the parking lot until we take our spot at the head of the procession.

At his son's request, we will provide motorcycle escort to the cemetery.  The road into the cemetery, although completely paved, is rather steep so caution is advised.  We will proceed past the gravesite to a more level parking area.

I realize this is short notice and may conflict with other missions that are taking place but, if arrangements can be made, as much participation as possible is requested.

John,
Some people may take the freedom we enjoy for granted, but many more of us realize there is a tremendous cost. Thank you for being willing to serve our Country and to protect those freedoms.
Rest now in the eternal peace of God.

Mr. Hefner, as a Veteran of both the Korean and Viet Nam conflicts, the citizens of this country are indebted to you for your willingness to answer the call to protect the freedoms we have come to expect and enjoy.  Unfortunately, for your duty, you received very little thanks at the time.  It will be an privilege, as the Patriot Guard Riders, to afford you the Honor and Respect you have earned.

May your family take a measure of comfort in knowing that you did your duty well and without question.  You fought the good fight and are now in a far better place, free from all pain and suffering.  May God grant you eternal rest among the angels.

God Speed John.  We humbly salute you, sir!
Respects,
Joe

******************************UPDATED ITINERARY**********************

I have been assigned RC duties to honor this fine soldier.  Thanks to everyone that has helped set up this mission.

Staging will be at   11:15  hours, with ride briefing at 11:30.  This should give us time to be in place in front of the funeral home before it starts receiving family and guests.  To access the staging area, turn onto FORT AVENUE,(right beside the funeral home) and turn into the 2nd entrance.  There will be a PGR member standing at the intersection at FORT AVE. to direct you to the staging area.    Once Mr. Hefner has been received into the hearse we will take our position in the procession.

The cemetery is approximately 1 -  2 miles from the funeral home.  The road is paved, but not in best condition.  We will ride in staggered formation to the site.  Talking with the funeral director, we will pass the burial site and be parking on a "level" area, which I assume is one of the cemetery roads.  If you are uncomfortable with these conditions, please remind me to address this at the ride briefing

At this time, the funeral home is trying to coordinate a police escort.  It is undetermined if they will be available.

The address for the funeral home is:

  Markwood funeral Home
111 South Mineral Street   (This is U.S. Rte. 220)
  Keyser,  WV

Any other information or changes will be posted as they become available.

Let's show our respect for this special soldier and fine man

What Heroes Gave

Each donned their uniform to be
Defenders of our liberty

Their mission sure, their spirits bright
Guard freedom’s home, be brave to fight

One final day each faced their call
Each gave their best enduring all

We’ll never know what they went through
But know they loved this country true

Deep down inside we should all feel
What heroes gave, their cost so real

We must stay thankful, grateful of
The gift of freedom through their love

Their loved ones bore the gravest pain
What we can’t know, some now sustain

To God I pray their pain will cease
And each will find long-lasting peace

Remember this from year to year
What heroes gave – shan’t disappear

We’ll never let their special day
Their time for honor slip away

These brave fought for a nation free
If not for them, where would we be?
