America mourns the loss of another member of the Greatest Generation. There is no way to measure the long-reaching effects - literally around the world - that are a result of the actions of these extraordinary men and women. Because of brave and honorable Americans such as Charles Maupin, millions of people live in freedom.
Rest now, forever in the presence of the Lord...your mission here is finally over, Sir.

To the Maupin family, my prayers for you are now doubled. May God wrap you in comfort and strength as you say goodbye to Charles. May He also continue to guide and strengthen you as you - and so many of us - keep the vigil for Matt.

When you come to the edge of
All the light you know
And are about to step off
Into the darkness of the unknown
Faith is knowing one of two things
will happen:
There will be something solid
to stand on
Or you will be taught how to fly.

It is so difficult to see our WWII veterans continue to dwindle in number.  They were truly the "Greatest Generation".  Thank you for your service to our country.  You will not be forgotten.

We will continue to stand with Keith and Carolyn until Matt finds his way home.  May God continue to grant a sense peace and strength to the Maupin family.  Their courage since April 9, 2004 has meant so much to so many.

Mission Report: Charles Maupin (83) WW II Veteran

February 16-17, 2007 Mother Nature sure is making our missions tougher and this Mission was no different. We had all of those elements that you just do not want to happen. It was 18 degrees and the temperature would only get lower as evening
approached.

We arrived at the staging area and had a short briefing. I told everyone that we would stand outside until all family members were inside, then we ourselves would move into the funeral home. I had spoken with the Funeral Director earlier that day and he had a place for us to keep warm and drink some coffee as well. Everyone bundled up and took their positions outside. We had six people show up and they did a fantastic job.

As the time for visitation hours grew near the sounds of small town America shutting down for the day was evident. Lewisburg, OH. is not that small of a town, but a really friendly town that still has a lot of those "Mom & POP" stores.

Local folks started arriving to show their respects for "Charlie" and his family. You could tell he was a well liked man, and was known by young and old for his candid views and his love and respect for God and Country and his Dog.

The American Legion Color Guard and Honor Guard arrived around 5:30pm. We spoke for a while and got information on how things would be handled once the services
started. Due to the weather conditions only the Firing Squad and Bugler's would be outside. At 5:45pm. we moved inside and went to the area set-up for us and took off a couple of layers of clothing and rehearsed how we were going to post our-selves during the services.

Once everyone was seated we filed into the room and stood with flags, backs against the wall and quiet. It looked real nice to see "OLD Glory" at attention Honoring this fine American. As I stood there looking around the room I thought to myself what strength this family has. There was a lady that came to the podium and talked about what kind of person "Charlie" was and how he and his dog would "Hang-out" at the local Subway and talk to folks young and old about life in general and if they wanted to talk religion he was as they say in Texas Hold-em " I'm, all in" .

It was nice to hear he communicated his life lessons learned to folks that wanted his advice or even those that did not. Sounded to me like he was a wealth of information. I could not help but see Keith Maupin sitting there and thinking to myself, here is a man that is going through some of the worst times of his life, not only losing his father but also not knowing where his older son Keith (Matt) Maupin is. As most of you know Matt is the only POW/MIA of the Iraq War.

He has been missing going on three years. I know it had to be rough on Keith, but I will say this, he is one tough individual and he will make it through all of this.
The American Legion Honor Guard did a wonderful job. Taps was played both on the Bugle and the French horn. The sound resonated through-out the town.

The services ended and we all went to eat dinner. Everything was nice and the Maupin Family welcomed us with open arms. I spoke with Keith and told him that Saturday (Part Two) there would be PGR members in Mc Kee, KY to meet him and his family and Honor his father. He was happy to know that everything was taken care of and that his family in McKee, KY. would get to see their father and family member Honored there as well.

I received an e-mail from Steve Verrigni Kentucky Ride Captain in charge of the Second part of this mission letting me know that the Mission went very well there as well. Which I had no doubt, Steve is and has been GREAT to work with. He, like me, puts a lot of effort into making the Mission a very positive remembrance for the family and friends.

In Steve's e-mail he explains the mission to me and I must say it sounds as if "Charlie" has a wonderful resting place which is on the edge of the Daniel Boone National Forest.
I know he will be posting his mission report as well.

I want to thank the Maupin Family for letting us show our Honor and Respect for Charles Maupin, also to our fellow PGR Member Keith Maupin. Thank you
to Barnes Funeral Home for their hospitality and concerns for our well being and to the town folks of Lewisburg, OH.

Again, a Special thanks to the members that stood for this Great American
Charles Maupin.

Mission Complete - Charles Maupin, 83, WW2 Army Veteran, Lewisburg, OH/McKee, KY 16, 17 FEB 07

The cold, gray sky was a somber remind we were paying tribute to an American Hero, one of our Greatest Generation.
My duty was to honor this veteran on the second part of this mission. The Assistant Ride Captain on this mision was Phil Roberts who did a great job of scouting the cemetery and working with Mr Melvin Lakes.
My Brother Ohio PGR Ride Captains, Robert Woods and Paul Santiago conducted the first part in Lewisburg, OH on 16 FEB 07.
We arrived at the Lakes Funeral Home in McKee, KY at 1100 hours on 17 FEB 07 and conducted a briefing in the parking lot before meeting with Mr. Melvin Lakes, the owner and Mr Harold Brown. Mr Lakes recommended we use his facilities for a breifing / debriefing area. The PGR turnout was good and everyone is commended for braving the elements to serve as an Honor Guard.
Mr Brown worked as our liason to coordinate the visitation. Mr Lakes opened the funeral home kitchen up to us for a warm drink and a place to thaw out. He was very proud to have the PGR attend and took pictures of our Honor Guard posted at the main entrance and on his veranda.

We posted the Honor Guard at 1145 hours. We were joined by Debora Nichols of the Blue Star Mothers and her daughter.
A stiff wind and snow kept our flags flying proudly in honor of Charlie Maupin. The Maupin family arrived and immediately came out to thank each and everyone of us. Keith Maupin was very grateful to us. His son, SGT Micah Maupin, US Marines Corp., thanked us for paying tribute to his Grandfather.

As the citizens of McKee and friends of Charlie filed past us, I couldn't help but be proud to be there and honor this great individual. He and many others are the reason we live as free as we do today..these young men that went to serve in the defense of Our Nation went unselfishly, defeated the Axis powers, and made the world free again. The horror of war faced young men who had never been farther than the county line, now half way around the world....these young men came back home and raised my generation to live as we do.
Thank You, Charles Maupin, and all your comrades for your sacrifices!

At 1330 hours we moved the Honor Guard to the Gray Hawk Cemetery. Grey Hawk is a small village on the edge of the Daniel Boone Nat'l Forest. Remote, rugged, and beautiful country. This is one of many areas in this Great Nation where the patriotism, values and pride were handed down generation to generation. The Maupin Family Homestead was only 200 yards away from the cemetery gate. A small cemetery, too small for a driveway.
We posted the Honor Guard across from the entrance.

At 1400 hours the funeral procession arrived and the caket was placed under the awning.
The services were conducted by the local minister.
The McKee KY DAV provided a Color Guard, bugler, and  Firing squad. The Commander of the McKee American Legion did the flag presentation to the family. Taps were blown after a 21 gun salute.

I dismissed the Honor Guard at 1500 hours. PGR member,David Bolton arranged for a debriefing thatwas held at a local restaurant. We departed McKee, KY at 1545 hours.

It was an honor to pay respect to this American Hero.
