Heartfelt condolences to Sgt Holtom’s family and friends, and to the entire 321st Engineer Battalion (Corps) (Combat) (Mechanized), headquartered in Boise.  This battalion needs to be held up in prayer, losing 3 of their members in this incident!

Sgt Holtom, thank you for your service and protection of our nation and my family … a grateful nation needs to pause.  I trust you are at rest in God’s loving Hands and your family feels His comforting touch.  Rest well young warrior.

I am so sorry for your loss. I understand what you are dealing with as I lost my son in Iraq last March. Your hero, Sgt Holtom, will be remembered always as a courageous and selfless American who was willing to do what so many are not. I hope you will find comfort in the support offered by family, friends and strangers. I pray the wonderful memories of your dear James will eventually help to ease the pain you endure today. James' sacrifice will not be forgotten by our deeply indebted nation. God bless you. Julie Francis, Matt's Mom

Thank you for your service and sacrifice in defending and protecting our freedoms. As a nation we mourn your loss, and we will remember you always as a true American hero. To the family, I offer my prayers and support. I understand a little of what you are going through-my son, a Marine LCpl, was killed in Iraq. I pray wonderful memories of your dear warrior help eventually to ease the pain you endure today. Your hero will never be forgotten-he leaves a legacy of honor and courage that few will ever achieve. God bless you. Julie Francis, Matt's Mom

Thank you, Sgt. Holtom, for your bravery and courage at such a young age. Our nephew was killed in Iraq and we miss him, as you will be missed. Our prayers are with them, and our faith knows you have left a devastating area and been renewed in a more glorious place. May God bless your family, give them strength to live through the memories, until you are together again. Our thoughts are with you all.

Thank you for the mission you gave to your life in protecting our freedoms, and striving to give others, theirs. The lives of you and the men and women who have gone before you are raised high, and not given in vain. I honor you, and pray that our children will learn to do the same throughout coming generations. God bless your family, and may they keep their memories alive and rejoice in the life of a hero.

I start to write this and realize that it's so easy to just block my feelings and not acknowledge how special Sgt Holtom must have been and why I am writing this. With it being this hard for me I know I can't fathom the pain you must be feeling. No words can take that away. I guess what I feel would help, at least some, is the knowledge that people do care and that my loved one would not be forgotten. The sacrifice all of you have given to protect our homeland and freedoms is appreciated and will not be taken for granted. My heart goes out to you. I truly wish I were able to be there to honor you all and hold our flag.

I'm confused -- is the escort Boise-local, or from Meridian to Rexburg?

I'm here because I AM that "grateful nation."
