God Speed, CWO Defrenn.

High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air. . . .

Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

A rumble can be heard this morning in mountain valleys.  It makes a strange echo like thunder in the distance.  Along the coast as well there is a low rumble.  In South Carolina, Georgia, even in North Carolina motorcycles are warming up.  Riders are preparging for a long day in the saddle.

This is no pleasure ride.  They are not smiling.  They are Patriot Guard Riders and they are on a mission.........an Honor Mission in fact.  They're all heading to Barnwell, South Carolina.  They come to honor a South Carolina son, CWO Jason Garth DeFrenn.

Riders, please ride safe.  Bundle up against the cold.  And ride proud.

People of Barnwell, join us please in honoring one of your own who fell defending Barnwell and Laurens and Marietta............all of us.  Let your pride in America and your sorrow for this loss be visible, undeniable today.

Thanks be to God for men like Jason DeFrenn.  He has paid a terrible price for my freedom to ride.  I choose to ride today not where I want but where I need to be.  Where it is my duty to be.

Listen for the Rumble.  The Patriot Guard is rolling.

And on this day, the rumble will also ride the sky.

Father God.....we pause a moment this morning to pray for the Defrenn family....we pray that you would be with each member. surround them with your Holy Spirit...Embrace them and comfort them as only YOU can. I know you as creator grieve with this precious family.....When our Lord stood at the tomb of his friend Lazuras he wept....in all of his power and knowing what he was about to do....he still wept......you know the heart of grief so hold these broken hearts close to YOUR heart.
we also lift each member of the Patriot Guard....be with each one....I pray for safety and I pray we may conduct ourselves in a way that would only bring honor to Jason and comfort for his family...May our rumble be LOUD so that folks who dont know, will know a hero has passed their way
these things we ask in the name of your son Jesus.....Amen

A truly inspiring mission today for Chief Warrant Officer Jason Garth DeFrenn.  A chilly day in Barnwell was, at times, very warm with the support you showed to the DeFrenn family.

My thanks to all who rode this mission.  Thank you for riding in the cold.  Thank you for tolerating changes.  Thank you for being willing to do whatever was asked of you without complaint.  God bless you.

I do have some people I must specifically thank for service above and beyond:

Russ Argo who served as Ride Captain in Charge today and did his normal, impeccable job at organizing a response to every change.

Mark Rhodes who served as RC on Thursday night during visitation and provided MUCH assistance with overall mission planning.

Jim Hooper who assisted Mark and exhibited his quiet, reverent leadership.

Ron White provided recon photos, made initial contact with Sport's, our staging area, and then provided the tags we used today to remind each other why we were there

My Georgia brethren.......Mike, Rick, Paul, Nick, Bill.........and all of you who rode into South Carolina to assist us.  The mission would have certainly fallen short without your assistance.

HA, Thunderguards, Steel Stallions and all other motorcycle clubs who stood strong to honor a fallen Soldier.  You men are needed and you have responded.  My special thanks to Stew with HA for his unabashedly patriotic heart.

The Barnwell County Sheriff's Office and Barnwell PD who teamed up to provide a professional and highly respectful law enforcement response to this tragedy.  Their assistance smoothed many bumps in our road today.

The South Carolina National Guard who provided not one, not two, but three AH64 Apache helicopters.  I saw the comfort and pride those birds brought.  My hat is off to the National Guard.

South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford who quietly attended this Soldier's service.  He did not put on a show of being there.  He simply came and paid his respects.

I kknow I have forgotten someone.  My apologies in advance for that.

I do have one more special thank you.  My thanks to the DeFrenn family for allowing the Patriot Guard to perform an Honor Mission for your loved one.  This is what we do.  It is a need within us.  Our thanks for accepting us into your lives for these few days.

May this mission be our last but if that cannot be, let us be always ready to ride.

Listen for the Rumble.

I had the honor of attending the services for Jason. My friends Rick, Knobby, Chris, and Dennis all rode in from NC to pay our respects to CWO Defrenn, his family, and community. It was a long and cold ride and I finally arrived home at 8:30 PM, tired, very cold, and hungry. But there was a warmth inside for having been there to honor, to stand, for Jason. A true American Hero. The local, county, and state law inforcement people did as fine a job as I have seen on any mission. The fly over was an awesome sight and showed the love that the Army and the community had for it's fallen hero. There was a tremendous turn out by the PGR which I'm sure was appreciated by his family. To all that came on such a cold day, respects and thanks.

Community gathers to honor heroic pilot
Barnwell soldier remembered
By Tim Hicks | Morris News Service
Saturday, February 17, 2007
BARNWELL, S.C. - Chief Warrant Officer Jason G. DeFrenn made a split-second decision as he flew in the skies over Iraq.

What he did that day saved lives, but it cost him his.

On Friday, the small community of Barnwell gathered to mourn the loss of Chief Warrant Officer DeFrenn, but they also came together to celebrate and praise his bravery in service to his country.

"My son was fearless - but he was thoughtful," his father, Garth DeFrenn, said during the service held at First Baptist Church and attended by about 450 people.

"I think all soldiers are like that - fearless and thoughtful. They do something we can't do."

Chief Warrant Officer DeFrenn's AH-64 Apache helicopter was shot down Feb. 2 by Iraqi insurgent ground fire.

Chief Warrant Officer DeFrenn and his copilot, Chief Warrant Officer Keith Yoakum, of Hemet, Calif., who also died, had turned back and engaged the enemy to protect an American flight formation, according to an Army statement.

During the eulogy, Mr. DeFrenn recalled his son's last actions in combat.

"My son did something very remarkable two weeks ago. While in combat, he was fired upon.

"My son decided to come in between the fire," he said. "In those few seconds, my son decided to lay down his life so others could live."

Chief Warrant Officer DeFrenn's legacy as a warrior and as a man will not soon be forgotten in Barnwell. The day he arrived home, Tuesday, at Barnwell Regional Airport, his casket was greeted by an honor guard and about 60 members of his family and the community.

"I couldn't ask for a better homecoming for my son," Mr. DeFrenn said.

He also said his grandchildren, Chief Warrant Officer DeFrenn's four children, will keep their father alive.

His youngest child, Christopher, was born to Jenny DeFrenn on Feb. 6 - four days after Chief Warrant Officer DeFrenn was killed, Mr. DeFrenn said.

"I hope Christopher grows up to be a peacemaker - we all need peace," he said.

It was an honor to attend the services for CWO Defrenn. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to all of his family. Even though he lost his life, the decision he made that day shows the true measure of patriotism and brotherhood exhibiited in all of our young men and women in today's military. May you rest in peace and watch over your young family from the throne of God.

I wrote this poem found below when I first learned of Jason and Keith's passing.  It was actually before I learned of all the details of their final flight and sacrifice made for their fellow aviators and soldiers.  The Lord moves all our hearts in wonderous and mysterious ways.
I could not ride this mission nor Keith's at Fort Rucker but was riding with you all in spirit and standing with you in Respect.  My tears flowed hard during the time both services were underway.

To Jason's family, God bless all of you for allowing us to be there for Jason, for you and for all of America's troops.  We cannot ease the pain of your loss but please know that we share the wounds.

A fellow Army aviator stationed in Tucson was able to make it to Keith's service and had this to say, "It was raining like hell -- thunderstorms moving through -- but the Patriot Guard stood firm. I thanked as many of the guys as I could for their support and commitment to our fallen brother. It was a true comfort having the Patriot Guard Riders honoring this hero."

It is an incredibly tight-knit family we aviators share.  So much like that of our own PGR.  Of this, each and every one of you can be humbled but very, very proud.

Jason, Keith, you are both the consumate professional, true Hero and all any young aviator should strive to be.  Indeed, soldier or not, what ALL of us should strive to be.  For no greater love.....

Soldier on, gentlemen.  Fly on Eternal, Unbreakable Wings.  I'll remember you always and I'll give a salute skyward whenever I hear your Thunder from the sun.

From your youngest of days you stare at the sky, You watch as the birds take wing
You dream that one day you'll be able to fly, And you'll know why they all want to sing

Top grunts, "C.O. wants to see you," , You think to yourself, "not again,"
"Reporting as ordered," you hold your salute, "At ease," he says with a grin

"You're going!" he says.  "Going where, sir?" you ask.  "To Flight school!  Dismissed!  Go get packed!"
"Yes, sir!" You salute. You back out his door, You think, "Someone upstairs must have cracked!"

Through Rucker's gate you cannot wait, Deep in your chest it pounds
For never again will foe or friend, See you tethered to the ground

Autorotations, lift and thrust, Checklists of every kind
So much info flung your way, They must mean to snap your mind

From pinnacles to 50 ft. AGL, From slings to Nap of the earth
Hydraulics off, Drop, Yank and Flair, The school will soon give birth

Graduation day from the grandstands they peer, Your family and friends have come
They hear you coming from the east, A wave of Thunder from the Sun.

The first birds appear above the trees, A gasp comes up from the stands
With tears of pride as you all soar by, Their Liberty now in your hands

Now tears of pain are falling, To the battlefields you are bound
You cradle their face onto your chest, "I'll be back soon," you vow

Dodging murderous flak in a Medi-Vac, To pull all the injured out
Thundering out of the sun they come in as one,"HERE THEY COME!" all the ground troops shout!

The Gunships come in waves now led, By scouts above the trees
The rockets fly, the mike-mikes blaze, The bad guys are on their knees

From somewhere near an RPG, Tears through your wingman's tail
On his way down this warrior fires, His mission he will not fail

His last round takes out the last of those, Who would take on America's best
His last breath takes him homeward now, His brothers will do the rest

You're standing with his family,  And you feel it before you hear
A tremor through the ground, Beneath your feet as something draws near

The lump jumps up into your throat, For from the East they come
Iron horses rumbling into view, Thunder from the sun

The Guard will escort your Hero home, Out to his final post
With flags stretched taut by a chilling wind, And more respect than most

For many of them have been there too, And all vow Never Again
Would anyone show any disrespect, For returning women and men

Our troops, our sons, our daughters, Our mothers and fathers, all
The ones who bore the burden, When our leaders made the call

They are so much like us flyboys, They've got our six, of this, have no doubt
They'll bring us home and you'll not be alone, It's what Patriots are about

Look to the skies where I use to fly, When this warrior's days are done
And listen for the sound We make,

Thunder from the Sun

Dedicated to Jason, Keith and all the men and women who have given all while beating the air into submission.

TROG, You may not have ridden with us, but you were there. What a touching poem-you were truly moved. It's uncanny how it rings so true. Thank you for sharing it with all of us. As an old Infantryman, the thump of the Huey's rotors and Cobra's bark brought a swell in my chest. One could always count on Army Aviators. Friday, as the sounds of the bagpipe faded away, the rumble of the AH-64's coming in from the South brought the same feeling, only with tears. Three Apaches flew over in perfect formation honoring one of their own. The crunch of the Honor Guards feet through the gravel was all you could hear. I was honored to stand among the mourners. Thank you for your service.
