High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air. . . .

Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

— John Gillespie Magee, Jr

God Speed, CWO Defrenn,

George

I grieve with the Defrenn family at the loss of this American hero, a son of my beloved South Carolina. As a veteran and as the son and grandson of several generations of American military veterans, I want you all to know that I and mine are aware of your pain and we emphathize with you. We, too, have lost loved ones in distant lands as they fought and bled to defend this great nation we call "home". To Chief Defrenn, I want to say, "Thank you, Sir, and know that the PGR will be there to support and comfort your family in any way we can. Though our efforts will be feeble in comparison to the sacrifice you have lain upon the alter of freedom, they will be from the heart. Rest easy, Brother. The Palmetto State and the rest of the USA will never forget you and your fallen brothers and sisters!" Standing by in Simpsonville, SC.

I wish to convey to the family of CW2 DeFrenn my deepest condolences. He has served this country as few have, giving his all in the cause of freedom. Stand down, Chief DeFrenn, we will pick up your load. I regret I will probably be unable to support this mission when it occurs, since I am TDY in WA for the next week. If the situation changes, I will be there.
