The family of Jerome 'Jerry' James Jones has asked the PGR to attend his Funeral service.
Jerry passed away on January 5, 2007, at his home of a heart attack.
Jerry was 71 years of age.
Jerry was a PFC in the USMC , and served in the Korean War from Sept 1953 to Sept 1955.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 15 at 1430 hrs (2:30 pm) at:
Zeller's Chapel of the Roses
2107 N.E. Broadway
Portland, OR
No graveside services are planned at this time.

I am the Ride Captain for this mission. I knew and worked with Jerry Jones for many years in my positions as Driver, Dispatcher, and Night Superintendent at Radio Cab in Portland. Jerry, as he preferred to be called, was a longtime Driver/Owner there. I liked Jerry and am saddened by his passing. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family. I had a lengthy conversation with both his wife, Phyllis, and his son, Ed, today (both of whom I also know). It was clear that they will miss Jerry and are having a difficult time adjusting to his no longer being with them. I pray that their period of mourning will pass quickly and (as I have said before) that they are able to accept that Jerry has merely moved to another room in the Lord's House where they will all reunite someday.
Please monitor this thread for staging information which I will post at a later date. Rest in Peace Marine.

| I am saddened by the loss of a co-worker and fellow veteran. Like Chonga, I also worked with Jerry and we at Radio Cab were all stunned and saddened by his sudden passing. My condolences to his family and know that I will stand proud to honor this Korean War hero. |

STAGING INFORMATION:
We will be staging in the parking lot of the Hollywood Fred Meyer located just south of 30th and N.E. Broadway. We will stage between 1300hrs(1:00PM) and 1330hrs(1:30PM). The ride briefing will be at 1330hrs(1:30PM) with KSU @ 1345hrs(1:45PM) for the short ride to Zeller's Chapel of the Roses at 2107 N.E. Broadway.
DIRECTIONS:
FROM THE 205 FREEWAY: Take I-84 westbound and then take exit # 2 "43rd St." to the right off the freeway. Proceed in the left lane to the end of the ramp and take a left turn on N.E. Halsey St. Proceed to N.E. 42nd (short distance) and take a right turn. N.E. 42nd will wind around one corner and bring you to N.E. Sandy Blvd. where you will take a left turn. Switch to the right lane and proceed to N.E. 39th St. (Starbucks is there) and take a right turn. One short block and take a left turn on N.E. Broadway.
Proceed to N.E. 30th and take a left turn (left turn signal there) into the Fred Meyer complex. We will stage in the right side parking lot (in front of Entry B)where you will see a large yellow playground set in the corner.
FROM I-5: Take I-84 eastbound to Exit # 1 "33rd Ave" and take the exit to the right off the freeway. Stay in the left lane and at the Viaduct turn left, cross the bridge and turn left onto N.E. Broadway St. Follow the directions in the paragraph above from there.

Jags (AKA Phyllis Jones),
Thank you for sharing Jerry's photo with us. I am glad these posts here are comforting to you, that is why these people all over this country and even some other countries make the posts here. It is our objective to let you know that Jerry's service to this country many years ago was not forgotten and his service has placed him in a special place in the hearts and minds of many Americans, both Veterans and Non-Veterans. We all wish you a bright and happy future, knowing that Jerry is in good hands now and that many across this land share in your loss. I will see you Monday. Its a beautiful Chapel by the way, I stopped in there a couple of days ago.

| My name is Ed Jones; I am Jerry Jones' son. I am grateful to the Patriot Riders and especially Bill Seymour for helping us honor my father.
My father joined the Marine Corps when he was only 18 and was active for less than 3 years, but his experience there shaped his life forever after. He kept his ramrod straight posture for the rest of his life, something he learned about in the Marines.
He was a man with strong convictions. He cared about his country and the people he loved, but in the era when he grew up, men did not always let their emotions show. He did show what he felt by his actions though. He served in combat in a very harsh and cold environment. The Korean Veterans are often forgotten, as the Korean war did not get the attention of WWII or Vietnam, so I was surprised and very happy to get a call from the Patriot Riders.
Dad did his duty and did not expect anyone to congratulate him for it. I think in some ways his experiences on the battlefield scarred him. He never talked about the painful experiences of wartime, but I am so glad that in this day and age Veterans have formed organizations such as the Patriot Guard Riders to support each other.
I also work at Radio Cab in Portland, which is a company that was formed by Veterans in 1946, and our slogan says right on the door, "Veteran's Driver Owned". Radio Cab was an early Veteran's support group. We still work with the Veteran's Administration to this day, transporting many Vets to and from Medical Appointments. I have had many moving conversations with Vets, some of whom have been quite ill and tell me things very moving. I am proud to help.
I am grateful to the Patriot Guard riders for reminding me and Dad's family of the things he accomplished and the things he was part of. Thank you for lending your strength and support and presence. I am so glad there will be a decent turnout for Dad's funeral.

| Ps, The picture I submitted is of Jerry and his son Jamie. He loved his sons very much, though it was hard sometimes for him to show his love when he was younger. As he grew older, he kept getting more in touch with his feelings. He really loved his family, and he loved the guys he worked with. He loved serving people in his cab. He remained a hero to his final moments on this Earth. - I love ya Dad. |
