14 Nov 2006 10:54 PM Alert

I received this tonite (14NOV06, 2322) I will be attending.

"Hi Henry...this is Rich Fink (PGR nickname "Goofball43") from Sparta, WI.
We met at Ft. McCoy for the Ortiz funeral mission.

This past Sunday evening (Nov. 12, 2006) a regular Army soldier assigned to
Ft. McCoy and living in Sparta took his own life.  He returned from a tour in Iraq just a few months ago.  He leaves behind a wife of many years and 3 children, ages 12, 13, and 15.  He was a Harley rider and may have recently joined the PGR.

Since he was not "KIA" his demise and name will not show up on the DOD news
releases.  The Army's public affairs office will be issuing an obituary and
news release either today or tomorrow (11-15-06).

His family is staying with us while their home is being cleaned up and
sanitized.  They're requesting a PGR presence.

SFC Charles Beeler, age 39, passed away on Sunday November 12th, 2006 at
approximately 11:00 p.m.  Services as follows:

Lantham-Smith Funeral Home, 106 W. Franklin St, Sparta, WI.   Visitation on
Friday, November 17th, 2006, beginning at 11:30 a.m.  Services will follow
at the funeral home at 1:00 p.m. with burial immediately after the service
at Woodlawn Cemetery.  This cemetery is a mere few blocks north of downtown
Sparta on Water Street.  For all practical purposes, the funeral home is
also on Water Street on the north end of the business district.  Water
Street is the 2nd stop & go light (when traveling Hwy 16 west to east)
through Sparta.

The Army Casualty Assistance Officer is XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

Charlie and I were very close friends, as were many local bikers.  A number
of them intend to ride in the funeral procession and are more than willing
to join with PGR riders.  Most won't have their own flags but will gladly
stand a flag line - a few extra flags would be welcome.

The last time I checked, Friday's weather is forecast to be a high of 42 but
otherwise tolerable - some clouds maybe but no snow or rain.

I can be reached at either XXX-XXX-XXXX(home) or XXX-XXXX (La Crosse area
cell phone).

Respectfully,

Rich Fink, SCPO (USN-retired)
Sparta, WI"

This is truly a sad occasion. It seems that not all casualties happen on the battlefield. My prayers are with the family. I know that there is nothing I could say that will lessen the pain, please know that you are not alone at this time. We will do our best to honor Charles.

15 Nov 2006 7:00 PM Alert
Mission Update:  (this is long-winded!  please bear with me...thanks)

Visitation and Services at:  Lenham-Smith funeral home, corner of Water Street and Franklin, Sparta, WI.

Visitation date/time:  17 November 2006, 1130 - 1300 hrs.
Services at 1300, with burial immediately thereafter at Woodlawn Cemetery.  Any riders are welcome during the visitation.  Please keep the staging time in mind.

Staging Site/Time:
A & W Root Beer stand, corner of S Hwy #16 and Water Street, Sparta, WI.
Meet time NLT 1200 hrs.  Kickstands up at 1215 hrs.

Plan of Action

(1) Approximately 5-block parade formation to the funeral home.
(2) Road guards post as needed. (we may have LEO help on this)
(3) Parking likely to be at a premium at the funeral home:  on-street parking and parking at nearby bank is more likely.  We'll adjust as the situation becomes apparent.
(4) Form flag line along sidewalk that parallels the BACK (parking lot) side of the facility.  IF there's a UG presence (none anticipated at this time), we'll adjust to the situation.
(5) We'll hold the flag line from approximately 1230- 1300 hrs - - casual routine until services end.

Dress your bikes as needed during the service, be prepared to do an immediate escort NORTH on Water Street to Woodlawn Cemetery.  Road Guards post "smartly" and as-needed.  LEO escort to cemetery IS anticipated.  This portion of the mission is only a few blocks, no turns except for the one into the cemetery itself.  Good News:  cemetery has all blacktop roads.  NO gravel and NO need to park on questionable soft ground.

We'll do our usual flag line up for the burial.

Reception
Club 16 on S. Hwy #16 across from the Super Wal Mart.  Time frame roughly 1500 - 1700 hrs.  Ending time is open (Thanks to club manager Lisa - she says no evening events are planned).  All riders welcome:  "Charlie" aka:  "Chuck" or "Chuckie" was himself an avid biker.  His family will love a few smiles and all the hugs you can offer.

Special Note
Some children and young adults may want to join our flag lines.  Embrace them, show them what to do, and loan them flags if they want and if you can.  Consider this a matter of "there's no wrong way to do the right thing."

OK..therefore, and .. . so-on - if I missed anything or have really goofed, let me know.

From personally talking with the 3 kids (they're living in my home for this week and some weeks to come), I can tell you our (PGR) presence will mean more to them than we can fully comprehend.  This is an incredibly sad mission yet we will make it extra-ordinary to the family, one that will give them a lifetime of proud and pleasant memories of their father and hero.

Speaking of "hero" - Charlie earned the Bronze Star, apparently during his Iraq deployment.  He was too modest and too humble to mention this to anyone.  The Army CAO and I only learned of this when comparing medals on the burial class A uniform from his closet to the updated checklist of earned/authorized awards we were given to make sure everything was "just right" and correct.

Whew!  that should be "it".... and if it ain't so, please let me know!

Charlie, I thank you for all you've given me.  I live a life of freedom, peace, and security in my home because of you.  Know that I, and the PGR family, will keep your family in our prayers and our hearts and offer them the comfort of knowing we will be there for them in this trying time and for times to come.  As you took the burden on your shoulders to keep us safe, we gladly offer our shoulders to those you loved so much.

Know peace now my brother.

Deepest Sympathy to the family of SFC Charles Beeler.
Rich, I've just read your very well written mission plan for SFC Beeler. It is just devastating to know the circumstances. If the weather were a bit warmer, I'd surely head out to join you all in Sparta to honor him.
I've just noticed another U.P. member from Marquette may attend.
Altho' it is not likely I can get there at this time of the year, my thoughts and prayers are deeply heartfelt for SPC Beeler's wife and children. May they find peace of mind and may the angels bring SFC Beeler into heavens gates.
Rich: Your very heartfelt post really hit me hard. Best wishes to you, my fellow PGR members who attend, and especially the family.

Thanks so much, Al.  So very, very much.  Michigan is wayyyy too far to travel for this one, especially this time of year.  Rest assured we'll have a noteworthy PGR presence, both bikes and cages.

More and Many grateful "thanks" to everyone who has posted here.  You can have no full appreciation how much your kind words and thoughts mean to the children.  They began reading these threads about their father and they smile:  he's truly their hero, and a recognized hero to our country.

A BRIEF update - honest injun:  BRIEF....

Although services are tomorrow, Mom (Yon - she's Korean) was sufficiently composed enough to drive the kids to their respective schools this morning.  We brought her car out yesterday - don't know how she did it, but.... and this is almost funny.... she found time to go shopping FOUR times at Wal Mart!  A few of their closest classmates/friends have been out to our house - Charlie's kids were pretty insistent on going to school today.

This afternoon the boys play in a jr high basketball game in La Crosse.  Mom, Grandpa, his sister and her son (all from out of state, 'cept for Mom) are attending together.  Christina - Charlie's daughter, also the oldest - looks forward to attending a concert with her friends here in Sparta after school today.

See? ... I toldya... "BRIEF."  (coming from me, that is!)
