This mission was relayed by John Colter in Baton Rouge. THIS IS AN APPROVED MISSION REQUEST FROM THE FAMILY.
Mike/Eagle
This is an APPROVED MISSION – date and times still pending.
On Wednesday night, Nov. 8, a US Army combat veteran of the Vietnam War, 9th Infantry Div., 75th Regiment, 4th Battalion, LEE JOHNSTON, was involved in a fatal motorcycle crash at around 2145 hrs. Details on the crash are not available aside from it appeared to be a single-vehicle crash and alcohol was not a factor. Additional details on military service are pending and should be available by tomorrow (11/11) or Sunday at the latest.
Lee was an Honorary Member of the Baton Rouge Chapter of the Blue Knights, LA VII. After separating from the military after Vietnam, he worked as an OTR truck driver until becoming a Toyota service technician with Coleman Toyota for many years, working his way up to service manager. Most recently, Lee worked as the service manager at Calmes Motor Sports in Denham Springs.
His wife, Betty, has invited the PGR and the Blue Knights to attend the services. The services are still being arranged but the target date is Monday. The funeral home is Charlet Funeral Home, 4230 High St. in Zachary, services will be at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Zachary. More likely to end up going Tuesday or even Wednesday as the family is trying to have him interred in the Port Hudson National Cemetery – and they are closed due to the holiday weekend.
Lee Johnston obituary
Mike & Randy:
If the service goes on Tuesday, I will be available for ride captain. Monday is out due to court and work obligations. Wednesday is iffy but workable. I will forward whatever additional information I get to both of you as soon as possible. |

I live in Metairie and would like to attend this mission and link up with the New Orleans area contingent for a group ride to Zachary.
My home is near Power Blvd between the I-10 Clearview and Williams exit. (there is a Power exit westbound, but no entrance; there is a Power entrance eastbound, but no exit).
What do the folks suggest for a meeting point and time to meet for Metairie residences ???
Whoops, let me add my phone #'s and email email: mholiver@qwickconnect.net best to call me at: cell 504-494-7309 home 504-734-5531
thanx much |

Yes, there are some advantages to being retired. I do enjoy a Senior coffee at McDonalds. I'll gas up on the way to the meeting place. Planning to get to bed early. Rand McNally reports from my home in Metairie (I get on I-10 at the Veterans entrance going westbound) to the church in Zachary is 88 miles and 1 hour 40 minutes. I'll bring along detailed directions just in case, but I'm an admittedly bad navigator.
Be riding a brown classic '83 Goldwing faired/saddlebag/trunk Interstate with big round headlight, 2 small white foglights up front, led side lights front and back, 2 extra rear redlights on lightbar. White helmet with microphone. |

Ok, here it is...
K/U at the Discount Zone (or whatever it's called). It's the convenience store/gas station right off of the Veterans exit for I-10 heading west.
Kickstands up at 6:30 sharp. Be there early if you need to fill up or grab a donut or whatever.

If you'd rather name brand gas like I do, there's a Shell station a few blocks on Vets after turning LEFT and going under the overpass. It's on the left at Downs Blvd.
Also, if breakfast at McDonalds (I believe it opens at 5:30am) attracts you, there's one just past the Discount Zone on the other side of Vets. There's another Discount Zone just across the street (Green Acres St.) from the McDonalds just to help confuse us.
BTW, because of coolish weather, I'll be wearing my Silver full face/flip up helmet, not my white open face.
If ya happen to have a CB, I'll be on Channel 1.
Weather report for Metairie and Zachary is the same: Low 65 High 72 |

| Stonechief - if ya'll get to Baton Rouge for 0700 - I'll stage at the TJRibs parking lot. It's on S. Acadian right off I-10. Coming from NO - I-10 merges with I-12 - 2nd exit after the merge is Acadian Thwy. - exit to the right and turn left at the Shell Station to get into the TJ Ribs lot. I'll wait for y'all till 0700 - then I have to move right along. If you're running late - keep heading west then take I-110 north towards the airport - don't cross the Mississippi on I-10 west. For any coming from Lafayette - exit I-110 north coming down across the I-10 bridge and stay in the left lane(s). Once on I-110 north, follow it through North Baton Rouge, past the 190 exit, past the exit for BR Metropolitan airport, take the Baker exit - Hwy 19 north - go through Baker - next town is Zachary. You'll notice the speed zone changes - you'll see a big Ford dealership (Superior Ford) on your left as you approach a stop light - take a left there - it's Main St. - turns into High St. - look for the intersection of Lee St. (there's a traffic light) - take a left on Lee going south - church is about a block and a half on the left - St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Ride Safe. |
