10 NOVEMBER VETERANS APPRECIATION DINNER FINDLAY OHIO
PLACE- CHAMBERLIN HILL SCHOOL (GRADES 3-5 ) 600 W. YATES ST. FINDLAY, OHIO
TIME- PATRIOT GUARD RIDERS ARE ASKED TO BE AT THE SCHOOL AT 0900, BIKES (WEATHER PERMITTING) TO PARK IN FRONT, ALL OTHERS IN PARKING LOT.
There will be a pot luck, homestyle meal served to all veterans present. This is the fifth year for this event at this school. The children get to meet veterans from all conflicts, spend time with them, and ask questions.
The Patriot Guard Riders have been especially invited and it is requested we bring our flags to surround the ceremony indoors. The orgainizer wishes to acknowledge the PGR for their service to veterans and their families.
Veterans will be brought in by the VFW, AMVETS, and American Legion for this.
It is also requested that we be present to answer questions and let the kids check out the bikes. I suspect a question and answer session with the 5th graders concerning the 1st Amendment, and the cost and sacrifices of our freedoms.
I would personallly appreciate it if our younger members could be present to show that we are comprised of all ages, backgrounds, and branches of the service.
I hope to also question these 5th graders on several subjects, such as respect, honor, and helping others, as well as the sacrifices for Police Officers and Firemen.
ALL VETERANS ARE URGED TO ATTEND AND SPEND TIME WITH THESE YOUNGSTERS. THEY ARE OUR FUTURE, AND THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO SHARE OUR EXPERIENCES, AND SPEND SOME ONE ON ONE TIME WITH THEM ALSO.
I have been told that 4 complete tables are filled with a pot luck feast for a king.
THIS DINNER IS COMPLETELY FREE TO ALL VETERANS.
THIS SCHOOL LOOKS FORWARD EACH YEAR TO THIS EVENT, AND THE CHILDREN LOVE SPENDING TIME WITH THE VETERANS. THIS IS A LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR THEM, AND I SUSPECT, US AS WELL.
THE CHILDREN ENJOY THE THOUGHT THAT THEY HAVE DONE THEIR GOOD DEED FOR OUR NATIONS VETERANS THIS DAY. THEY LEARN THE MEANING OF VETERAN, THEIR SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY, AND SIMPLY ENJOY SPENDING TIME WITH US.
I BELIEVE THERE IS ALSO A PROGRAM THAT IS PUT ON FOR THE VETERANS, AT WHICH TIME, WE SURROUND THE AREA WITH AMERICAN FLAGS.
THE TEACHER THAT CONTACTED ME STATED THEY ESPECIALLY HOPE TO SEE MOTORCYCLES, SO LET'S HOPE FOR SOME RIDEABLE WEATHER.
HOPE TO SEE A GOOD SHOWING AT THIS EVENT. I WAS CONTACTED PERSONALLY FOR THE PGR INVITATION.

Anyone who missed this one, missed meeting a lot of very nice people, (Adult and Young), seeing vets from many conflicts/wars/police actions/?. The messages on the walls should be read by everybody. The displays were great. I had never seen a Choir like this one. Ask someone who was there. I believe there was more then four tables of very good food. It will be a very happy memory for me.

I fully expected this day to be a day of education for the children, but this surely was an education for us, given by the children.
My first impression was awe, the second of pride, the third of assurance.
First I was impressed by the efforts of this faculty, the parent volunteers, and the children all excited, polite and courteous. I was later informed that this day, the Veterans Appreciation Dinner, was these childrens favorite day, not Thanksgiving, not Holloween, not Christmas, but Veterans day. They worked weeks to prepare for this, and frankly, I was impressed beyond words, and with the second song they sang for us, to tears.
Looking around the auditorium at veterans of generations past, I was truly in awe of the history represented by them. The Battle of the Bulge veteran, the P-38 pilot, the WWII veterans, the nurse, the Korean Veterans present, what HISTORY. It was at this point the pride kicked in. How proud I was to be included in this most impressive assembly of veterans, of American Heroes.
My assurances came of our future as a free America. These children are the Heroes of tomorrow, the future defenders of our freedoms. I could tell them nothing they didn't already know of the cost of their rights and freedoms, these children truly know and understand. They truly appreciate the service of all veterans past, present, and current serving military men and women. I am here to tell you all, our future is in good hands. These young 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders, know and understand more than a lot of adults do. I suspect this is because of the teachers and this school system in Findlay Ohio, the "Flag City USA".
We were treated to a massive, 6 table buffet. The only difficult thing was deciding what to eat from the massive amount and variety available. After eating, the children and volunteer parents came around and removed empty plates and cups, yet another delivered me a hot cup of coffee. It was evident that their pleasure this day was serving us and showing us their appreciation for us, for our service past, to insure their freedoms now.
It was us that got an education in this grade school this day. It was us who received the honor and appreciation from them. It was for us that they do this. I for one, will make this my annual event the day before Veterans Day. Not only being aroung the other veterans, but being around these polite, courteous and respectful children. I was truly touched by all, by the program, by those present, and by the children, teachers and parents.
They loved the motorcycles there this day. The antique military equipment present were a special attraction also. I was informed of the addition of our motorcycles adding something special this year. This event has gone on for many years.
I was especially hit by the three High School girls that did a special rendition of "The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy from Company B." They went to this school in their younger years, and did a wonderful job. I could see the delight in the faces of the older veterans, not to mention my delight.
I accepted this as a Special Mission request, intending on educating these children, how ill prepared I was for what I witnessed this day. How my heart was touched by them, and oh, how I look forward to next year with them. This day is truly what Veterans Day is meant to be, a show of appreciation to all veterans.
As a Viet Nam USAF Veteran, I was extremely appreciative of their efforts and their program for us. I felt a true Welcome Home, and felt that the wrongs of the past were finallly being righted. They even did a "Missing Soldier, POW/MIA Table Ceremony ! I surely hadn't expected this, and it hit me rather hard. This caught me totally off guard. They know the meaning of POW/MIA, they understand and will never forget them. I can't help but remember the adults and others that have asked me what it means, yet these young men and women know.
I left with an emmense pride and patriotism in the United States of America, our past, current and future. I left knowing that the sacrifices are not unnoticed, but appreciated by all. I left with an idea for the parking problems of next year, the place was packed to the max.
What a special day this was to me and to all veterans, past and present. The many active servicemen were given ovations, as were all veterans when asking to stand when their conflict was announced.
Our future is ensured and in good hands. There are those that will continue to pick up America's flag, our symbol of freedom, and continue the fight to insure them. I can only hope that all schools had this form of ciricullum and education, which I understand, this program is sent out and requested by other schools as a model. It is a very promising situation for America indeed.
A huge thank you to all involved, the Findlay City School system, the faculty, the parents, and a huge hug and thanks to all the children, you all made my veterans day have a special feeling never before felt. |

Not much to add after Taters words, but I will say it was very touching and of course the kids were just amazing. I took my neighbor who just joined the PGR on Wednesday the 8th. This was his first PGR anything. He was just in awe with the whole thing, and of the PGR members who rode a long way just to be there for the kids. We did let the kids sit on the bikes and Hoggly kept starting his up, you should of seen the faces of these kids it was a smile from ear to ear.
God Bless, Sarge |
