PV2 Michael V. Bailey was laid to rest yesterday. Surrounded by family, friends and quite a few patriotic Americans he was placed for eternity in Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery. He will rest in the company of other heroes from many conflicts.
What sticks in my mind is this young man’s goal, was to make people proud of him. He chose to make that happen with an Army enlistment. Doesn’t that speak volumes? From the 1960s, into the 1970s when Military Service was literally looked down on, to the 1980s when we were just ignored. A small resurgence in the 1990s and now in this new millennium, a young man from a small town in Maryland joins the Army, for a chance to make people proud. To me, that shows one fine job done by parents. It shows a young man with a good head on his shoulders. It shows why the Patriot Guard Riders were here.
It is obvious that his family was already proud of him and equally obvious he was loved. His is a tragic loss and he will be greatly missed.
PV2 Michael Bailey, you succeeded. I wish you were here to see and enjoy that success. You did impress and make those around you proud. You also made a whole group of people you never met, proud of you as well. Stand down and rest easy.
Thank you to the Riders who came out in the middle of the week. Some of you rode for 3-4 hours one way for a chance to show your respect. You all make me proud with your dedication and support.
Thank you once again to the Family and friends of Michael Bailey. We were honored to be allowed to show our respect at the church visitation and services. We were honored to escort our young warrior to his rest and bear witness to his military honors burial.
He will be remembered always. |
