25 Oct 2006 8:13 PM Alert
I received a very special email this afternoon, from the mother of one of Stephen's schoolmates. The email was written by the daughter of a couple who were on the flight from Atlanta to Birmingham that carried Stephen back to Alabama. She originally sent it to the local NBC affiliate, who aired an interview with her this evening , as well as to some close friends, including Stephen's father.          http://www.wsfa.com/Global/story.asp?S=5590095

There is a video link within the WSFA story to the interview, but here is the powerful email in its original form:

I wanted to share a story from my mom about Stephen......

My parents went to Chicago for the marathon this past weekend. They had 2 very different experiences with the military on this trip.

As they went to their plane in Atlanta on the way to Chicago, they passed a unit heading to Germany. My dad made a point of walking through the crowd shaking hands with as many as possible thanking them for what they do for our country.

On the way home from Atlanta yesterday (Monday), the pilot announced that they had 2 special guests on their flight. He introduced Stephen and the soldier that was escorting him home. He explained that Stephen had made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Mom said that the only sound you could hear the remainder of the flight was the sound of tears.

Not long after the announcement, a gentleman from 1st class came back and started to talk to someone about 4 rows up from my parents. It was the soldier escorting Stephen home. This gentleman gave the soldier his seat in 1st class.

As they landed they were given the usual landing instructions followed by a request to stay seated so that the soldier can exit the plane in a timely manner. Those that fly know that as soon as the seat belt sign goes off, everyone jumps up on a plane. Mom said that not one person moved. She noticed that 3 men in 1st class all of a sudden got up and started to gather their things. The soldier had not exited the flight yet, he was still waiting for the door to open. Someone from the back of the plane yelled up to them to stop and show some respect. Mom said that those 3 men, were visibly humbled. They immediately froze where they were.

No one got up until the flight attendant thanked them and told them that they may exit the plane or watch to observe Stephen leaving the plane. It turns out that Stephen was removed from the plane right under my parents window. Mom said that it was moving to see the reverence shown by all on the ground as they realized what was going on.

As I mentioned before, there was not a dry eye on that flight. That experience made the "thank yous" my dad shared earlier so much more important and meaningful.

We are truly blessed to live in such a wonderful country. God Bless America!!!!

Jenny Gray

-----------------------------
Thank you Jenny Gray for sharing your parents experience. It is very heartening to know that strangers on a routine flight from Atlanta to Birmingham were so respectful of and so touched by the special passengers they had with them on that flight. Patriot Guard Riders have already begun assembling in Prattville this evening for the very special honor of escorting Stephen as the community honors him tomorrow evening, and then for his funeral on Friday. God Bless Stephen Bicknell, his wife, and family.

This is a reminder to all of us that each day is precious and should be treated that way. You are never promised tomarrow and for some tomarrow may never come. My most humble condolences to Bicknell and Barrett family. I can not even imagine what they are going thru. To think this young brave man died to perserve our rights that were promised to us by our founding fathers.  I have only been following news articles about PGR for a short period of time. I was so impressed by what I read, that tonight I went to this website and was moved to join. With a full time job it will be difficult for me to go on to many escort rides. I live in Prattville and watched Stephen at many football games and in the state playoffs, I really did not know him personally, but knew his father-in-law, Marvin. I feel I need to help escort this Hometown Hero to his final resting place. So if the PGR will allow me to join them ,I will be honored.

I am new to this forum but have heard such good things about the PGR.  I live in Millbrook and might possibly be off of work tomorrow.  If I am, I would like to ride in honor of PFC Bicknell.  Could you please fill me in on what I should do, do I need to bring anything with me?  Not sure where Crestview Mall is.  Are there any particulars I need to know before riding? Thanks.
Sincerely,

Crawdaddy, Crestview mall is at the junction of hwy 14 and 31 in Prattville. Babcock furniture, Vivian's (used to be Prices Donuts) and a few other stores are there. I think it's also know as Pratt square. We would love to have you join us.

wmeades

welcome to the PGR!!!

as far as all of your concerns (who what when where) take a deep breath relax and keep an eye on this thread . . . . mostly all you need is the right attitude of respect (ok youve already got that one!!) and a 3x5 flag if you can find one (Lowes or Homedepot).

the RC will fill you in on the rest at the staging point and most of the other fellow PGR Riders will gladly help you along!

My thoughts and Prayers, and Condolences to the family. I was at Pernells, in june. I am from P-ville area, and still have relatives there. Can't make this one, as I am working at a Nuke plant in Mich. But I know the Atlanta USMVMC chapt, and the other Brothers are aware and are trying to show support. Wish I could make it. I am sure all you Alabama folks will honor this young man. I read the letter the young lady sent about her parents being on the flight that brought home this fine young man, very good letter. Proud of the floks on that flight! But then it is a BAMA thing isn;t it. Whis I could attend. Ya;ll saty safe and ride safe. I am sure you will do him proud!!
