With regret I am not able to ride on Monday (phase 2) for this hero. It was my privilege and honor to have participated in his escort home.

Staff Sgt. Paulsen, you may stand down now, for you are back home. Rest in His eternal comfort, and may our Lord's peace be with your family. Thank you for your ultimate sacrifice for our great country!

Kodiak, thank you for your smart leadership and guidance on this mission.

I am so grateful for your sacrifices Staff Sgt. Ronald Paulsen and to the family as well. In hopes for your ease of pain. I to regret not being able to attend the services in your honor!

Question of etiquette??????????? PGR members, is it proper to proudly wear our PGR banners on our bikes or magnet signs on our cage on the day of service that we cannot attend due to having to go to work instead? I thought it would be nice if I wore it on the way to/from work on that day in the soldier's and family's honor????????? Thank you to all who are able to attend that day, for your services as well!

I believe the plan is to stage at Home Depot airport, on Glen Widing, at 0830 Monday. KSU at 0900 to Evergreen Memorial in Vancouver to form the flag line. There will be a private service for family and friends at 1000. After the service starts, we go to Willamette National Cemetary and form the flag line. I think Kodiak is the Ride Captain for this mission and he has all the details. SSG Bam does as well. See you there.

I also wish to extend my condolonces to the friends and family of SSG Paulsen.

I am not certain yet that I will be able to participate, but if I do I will be travelling from Seattle on Monday morning. Is anyone else heading south from the Puget Sound area, and if so what are your plans? Perhaps we can meet someplace. I expect I'll have to be on the road between 0430 and 0500 to be there in time.

Carl

Edit: Unfortunately I will not be able to make it.

O.K., Bubz, here's the plan...

Planning around the unpredictable traffic of Portland, I think we need KSU at 0600 at Coburg TA TRuck Stop. That gets us to Santiam Rest Area by 0645-0650. We pick up those waiting there and head out NLT 0700. Take the Aurora exit to pick up anyone waiting at that exit and to avoid possible I-5/I-205 traffic back up and head in from 99E. When we hit the 205 in Oregon City we will just have to fight that traffic until we get to the Home Depot. This gives us 3 hours to do a normal 2 hour ride, taking into consideration traffic and FOG on the 99E.

Bortond,

I see no reason why you can not Proudly display your Banners and/or Magnets on your vehicle. I have my magnets on my Pick-up 24/7 and getting ready to install the large stickers that just came in.

You shouldn't have any problems once you get on to I-205 N until you get near the I-84 W exit....

It was the first truly cold morning of the year as we arrived at the funeral home to welcome the guests of our honored, departed Ron Paulsen. Some of our riders were chilled to the bone after a long ride with ice hanging off of their gear. Most did not feel the biting chill as bad; but we knew it was there.

There was not a participant who had forgotten gloves in the flag line. Most shifted from side to side trying to keep the blood moving. We heard mumbled ‘thank yous’ as the guests purposefully strode into the building.

We reassembled at Willamette National Cemetery. The day had warmed some but a lighter glove was still necessary to keep the flagpole from wicking the heat out of our hands. The location chosen had an amphitheater feel to it. Mt Hood stood clearly in the distance and Portland seemed close enough to touch. It was as if the world was on display to help mitigate the sorrow of the Paulsen family.

Our piper, par excellance, led us over the rise so that Amazing Grace would slowly disappear on the wind. We did an about face in pairs and marched away in columns of two. The effect was one that even the hardened news media types could not help but capture.

I hope that our small contribution on the day is something that the Paulsen family can take as a comfort and the healing will begin to replace the heavy loss of a loved one.

Small in numbers perhaps during the workweek, but that doesn't sound like a "small contribution" to me.  It sounds utterly moving.  I shed tears of proudness for those of you who attended I II and III !!!  I so was there in spirit this fine cold day.  I just choke knowing such fine people gave it their all, and were given such honors in return from you who could be there for them.  THank you again Ronald L. Paulsen for your services, I bid you farewell until we meet again.  Thank you Paulsen family for letting our PGR be there in respect and honor him and yourselves.
Thank you fellow PGR for doing what you do so well............I love you!!!

I'm sure we will be using it again because it worked so well so I suggest we name the manuever the "Pipey Fade". All we need is a mist. Also if anyone has a spare PGR armband for Pipey he would be glad to have one. Chonga

As happens with the best things, the "Pipey Fade" was totally unplanned!  I was accompaning him as he played the 2nd stanza of Amazing Grace like I did in Salem and, boy,  both of us were AMAZED when we turned around and everyone was following us!  It wouldn't have gone nearly as well had it been planned.

Note: what Pipey needs, in addition to the PGR armband, is some nylons or something - the goosebumps on his legs had goosebumps!

To give credit where it is due, as Jim followed Pipey away from the flag line a couple of others turned and started to follow along and SSgt. Bam, being the tactician that she is, knew a good thing when she saw it and gave the rest of us a couple of subtle hand motions to come along at that crucial moment and that started our exodus. Good call SSgt. Bam. Chonga
