My name is Tanner Melvin and I am an ex-resident of Blandinsville, IL and I've known Michael since he was a kid. Unfortunately I do not know Michael as well as his close friends, but I do know his parents and have for quite some time. - Michael chose to serve our country at a time when most needed, and for that I am proud. Roger and Shelly should be very proud of Michael and everything he fought for. I found out today from my father, who is the head of soldier burial for the VFW, that there was some altercations after Michaels death. In particular, a "family" from Kansas who travel all over our great country harassing fallen soldiers families. This is an outrage, and I wanted the Partriot Guard to know how much I respect what they do and to know that it is organizations like the Patriot Guard that makes me proud to be an American. Thank You all for what you have done, and what you continue to do. -Tanner Melvin

As my first encounter with the Patriot Guard was as a mournor at Srgt. Brent Kochs funeral. I had heard about the organization but had no idea what so ever a impact it has on peoples lives. As a 45 year man who didn't serve his Country in the Military. I must say I am very humbled at being in the presents of TRUE AMERICAN HEROS. I was at Cpl Dewitts funeral as my parents were friends (Army Buddies) of his grandparents. I drove my mother down to Blaninsville to show our respect for the family. I am very proud to say that I am a member of the Guard today. And yes I like many others if given a chance would go and serve our Country. But unfortunally I had my chance I didn't step to the plate when given the oppurtunitie. I will now do my best to serve as I can. I did see a patch on a jacket in Beardsley the other day which I can relate to. Something about I didn't but my uncle served in Vietnam. And just because I wasn't there doesn't mean I didn't care. And yes I do have a Uncle who is a Vietnam Vet. I will do the best that I can!!!

Cowboy, Nailer and all the proud PGR that joined the honoring of Cpl Michael Dewitt, USMC, I thank you for your patriotism, fidelity and friendship. The impact that PGR provides at such events creates that lasting, postive memory for the family and communities involved. As the Reverend said at the graveside, the demonstration of respect for the family and tribute to the fallen helps ease the pain of loss. I am proud to stand with such fine Americans in the honoring of other fine Americans. May we ride soon together in happier times.

To the Dewitt Family, what an honor it was to ride for Michael, The family that surrounds you are great people. Yeserday not only did I feel you pain, but also the love that is all around you.
Having the opportunity to speak with several of the Marines who knew Michael, he was very highly thought of by all who had met him. He truely is an American Hero. As I told you if anything we can do just call. And thank you so much for letting us be a part of your lives.
When Tyler came out to Tell us good-bye, he shook our hands and hugged us, This was my one defining moment. He shook the hands of the LTCOL and First SGT, and hugged them also. As he walked away, they said he he looked just like a younger Michael. I indeed came away from this with very renewed faith of the Patriotism in this Great Nation,we call home.
To all the PGR, thank you people, your spirit and integrity is inspiring, we had one new member and three of Michael's friends join us on the ride. Having viewed our flag lines from several angles you were great, HONOR and RESPECT people you done good.
Nailer thanks for your help, Terry,Tom, thanks for bringing Flags, and water. Everyone else thanks for your help, also It cannot be done without the dedication of people like you.

To the family of Cpl. Michael DeWitt: What a great honor it was for me to serve on this mission for your son. You are surrounded by great family and friends, and know that we will always be there for you if you need us.

To all of the PGR members that turned out: Fantastic job, folks. The weather for the Visitation Mission was wet and miserable, but everyone stood their posts in very fine fashion. Our flagline for the Funeral Mission was outstanding. Again, FANTASTIC JOB, FOLKS. I look forward to serving with each and every one of you again.

Cowboy and I had the good fortune to meet at length with LtCol Hollahan (PGR member Motorradmark) and the Marines of Cpl. DeWitt's battalion that escorted him home. (I'm sure that there will be a whole slew of new PGR members when they return to Camp LeJeune). It was immediately apparent when meeting these outstanding Marines that Our Great Nation is in very fine/capable hands. What I wouldn't give to be combat ready and get the chance to serve with this battalion during their upcoming deployment. Godspeed in your mission. Semper Fi

Out of the dark and out of the cold came the escort running late but running proud. I was so proud to see the PGR roll into the little town of New London, the county seat of Ralls Co. Mo. The refuel area/rest area at the Shell Station had a small but respectful group of PGR and community members waiting. We had cookies donated from the local
grocery store and coffee donated from the Shell station. I did my part by setting up with a big pot of hot chilie. I also had Vern take down the Marine Flag that has hung in our garage sense our own son left and thank God came home..I thought it was high time we fly it for another mother's son. I had it hanging on the side of my vehicle.

Vern and I have now done a couple of big missions....a small family funeral for an elder vet and now this airport escort. (he did, I however stayed behind, I'm just not a good night time, windy rider and I wanted him to concentrate on his driving and the task at hand).

As an old cop I had no problem getting police escorts for the last leg of the escort. In fact a retired officer I had worked with showed up with his wife. It was good to see him and his wife again. I had also posted (like I always do)
the PGR escort on a local message board and sure enough a half dozen or so folks from Hannibal Mo. showed up. One was a family with small children. I took down the smaller flags I had on my vehicle and gave them to the kids. Then explained why we were doing this. When Vern led the group onto the parking lot, Max was into a salute, I glanced down the flag line we had formed and the little boy around age 8 put his little hand up to his forward in a salute. I thanked the family for bringing their children, for teaching them by example and for honoring this young hero.

After a 30 min or so rest stop, refueled, regrouped and with determination against the night cold Chris and Vern led the group out into the dark night for the last leg of the escort.

...on a more personal level....unlike other times, I was able to meet the family this time. The grandmother had some chilie and then stood talking to me...all of a sudden she set her food down and huged me...breaking out crying...she said, "oh my, you have no idea what all this means to us"...."it's been a terrible week".

...for my part, I did what I did for her last night.
