A Camp Lejeune Marine who died early Monday morning at a home was an Illinois native who friends said had been deployed to Iraq.

Cpl. Michael A. Dewitt, 22, who is from Blandinsville, Ill., was attached to Combat Logistics Battalion, authorities said Tuesday. He was found dead at about 12:34 a.m. Monday. .

The news of Dewitt’s death traveled fast.  Friends from Northwestern Junior/Senior High School in Sciota, Ill., where Dewitt graduated in 2003, gathered Monday night to try and make sense of their friend’s death.

Dewitt played baseball and the saxophone in the band during high school. He also always wanted to join the military, Todd said.

“He eventually narrowed it down and wanted to be a Marine,” Todd said. “After Sept. 11, he was really for it. He wanted to serve his country.”

Michael was a D.A.R.E. student of our own, Jim Percy (PGR Macomb) when he was in the 6th grade.

Cpl. Dewitt will be escorted home Friday afternoon from Lambert Field, St Louis, IL to Macomb, IL by the Patriot Guard Riders.  Mission details are still pending however, he is to arrive at the US Air cargo area around 4:14 pm on Friday, 13 OCT 06.  Riders are asked to rally up at the cargo area at approximately 3:15 pm.

A serviceman lost for any reason brings sadness to all who knew him, and those who didn't. We thank you for your service to our Great Nation. Now, Marine, take your assigned place guarding Heaven's Gates, and we will take it from here.

I cannot make the escort ride to bring this man home due to prior commitments, but will be available for all other details (Visitation Mission and Funeral/Interment Mission). I have already cleared my schedule. Just let me know, and I will be there post haste to help out and ride for this young Marine.

Safe Ride all. Take care with large flags in heavy winds, we had one bike go down in Washington, IA because of it. Fortunately, nothing hurt but pride.

I am Cpl Dewitt's Battalion Commander at Combat Logistics Battalion-22, 22d MEU in Camp Lejuene. We mourn the loss of this great young American, who had given so much already, yet had so much more to offer. The Marines and Sailors of our Battalion miss this member of our family and send their thoughts and prayers to his family in Blandinsville. What fine young Americans that give of themselves. He served with honor in Iraq, with the 22d MEU(special operations capable), and returned in May. He just re-enlisted to deploy with the battalion on our next deployment. We call the roll and he does not answer. Cpl Dewitt. Take your post. Godspeed and Semper Fidelis.

This will be my first mission, will someone please walk me through what to do. I'd like to ride from thr airport to at least the state line if not farther.

First, how and where do we gather at Lambert airport?

Second, what is the proper and respectful way to drop out of the escort if I cannot go all the way to the funeral home?

Hi Diana,

Per the first post the staging area is.....ESCORT MISSION: Rally point will be American Airlines Cargo Area on the east end of Lambert Field in St Louis, MO. No restrictions on vehicles. I'm sure the RC for the ride will be there before you show up, just look for other bikes.

As far as dropping out, just make sure th RC knows the area, so when he sees a bike pull out of formation he wan't think that you have a mechanical problem.

Ride safe,

Respects,
Ed

All the ride info is correct, I think the map at bottom was for the mission in Bloomington, we will be in Macomb. After the service will be heading into Blandinsville for burial at Glade cemetary, right in town. Good roads. About 17 to 20 miles. Any questions can contact me personally.
