Thank's for the help on this BAM... I would be happy to lead the Beaverton group, unless anyone with more experience would rather do so.

Unless you're severely geographically challenged, like some we won't mention, step up and lead!

I need five (5) riders with large flags to be at the funeral home, Howell-Edwards-Doerksen at 1350 Commercial St. SE at 0800 Saturday morning.

Immediately after arrival at the church we will go to the staging area and join the rest of the riders for the mission.

Please e-mail ASAP if you are able to provide this service for our young patriot. I will provide specific directions depending on where you will be coming from.

Ride safe,

I will be attending this mission, either by cage or bike, as stated earlier.  I was wondering (hoping) someone from this area would be leaving "in the dark" as well as me as I don't want to ride down the hill alone in the dark...(or at all if icy).......if anyone knows someone travelling down Hwy 58 and passing by Oakridge by 6:00 am for this please let me know.  Otherwise I will be caging it that day.......and then will have an empty seat if anyone needs a ride.  Thank you all!

                                       MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

Five cycles, seven riders and four motor officers accompanied by five police cruisers escorted Lance Corporal Derek W. Jones to the memorial services at Salem Evangelical Church. We then joined most of the rest of the riders at the staging point for pledge, prayer and briefing. We were all of two blocks from the church, so no one got lost on the way.

With the later arrivals, we had eighty-nine (89) motorcycles and their riders, along with three cages in attendance for the service. The color guard departed early to the cemetary and created an impressive avenue of flags, with two riders posted at the turn-off from the highway.

Following the presentation of flags and plaques the committal service was concluded. Madison, Derek's daughter, was presented with a stuffed bear for comfort during the times ahead.

The entire family, three generations deep, was profuse in their statements of appreciation, and Derek's dad, Jeff, has committed to buying a motorcycle so he can ride with us in the future.

The mission was flawless and an example of what ordinary citizens can do to honor a veteran's sacrifice. I could not be more proud of the Patriot Guard Riders. Well Done!

   God bless you all.

Matt

During the memorial service itself, the USMC representative spoke not so much about the ultimate sacrifice made by this and other soldiers, but about how the outpouring of respect for these heroes have impacted others serving their country.  While I couldn't hear all he said (he didn't use the mic), he did specifically talk about the escort from the airport and the numbers of people lined along the streets so late at night to welcome him home.

While he didn't mention the PGR by name (at least I didn't hear him do so), he spoke about how much it met to them to know people like "those who come from around the state and beyond" to honor these men and women.  Matt, he just about quoted what you said below: "what ordinary citizens do to honor a soldier's sacrifice" and what it met to them.

Thought you'd like to know.

Mission Complete

Thanks to all that were present for final honors today for Lane Corporal Derek Jones.

There were many that stepped forward to render one last salute, one more whispered "Thank you", one more prayer.

Matthew Price did a fine job as Ride Captain, and will no doubt be called upon again for this type of duty. Others that deserve mention for their supporting roles in this mission: B.J. Jones, Kevin Wiles, Roper, Jon Moritz, Jim Jensen and many more.

You all are the reason that the families appreciate what the PGR does. You dedication, strength of purpose, and resolve to remember the fallen are traits that will serve you in the future. "Never Forget".

Zopa out

**One last thing:

At the rest area north of Eugene, several of us took a break. As we were standing around, a woman & her little girl asked if they could have their photo taken with us. Of course, we said yes, but the best part was when the little girl recited almost word-for-word, our mission statement. What a great cap to a long day....

Hey All, CW here.

I just wanted to add my two cents to Zopa's last comments. Yes, it was a treat to have a girl so young know of us, but for me, the best part was that, after she recited our mission statement to us, Zopa gave her his cap making her an official Ride Captain. Another one to add to our ranks!

Thanks from me, to all who were there today. God bless...

It was an honor to be there to support the family of Lance Cpl. Jones. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your sacrifice. You will be in my prayers.

It was also an honor again to ride with some great men and women. You people are the best. Thanks for letting me take part in the escort from the funeral home to the church. It was nice for a change to be rolling behind the LEO's with their lights on instead of stopped in front of them!!!

It is a moving experience to be in the middle of the rumble of all the bikes as we pay tribute to a fallen comrade. I am always humbled to know that there are still good people out there willing to dedicate time for someone that they don't even know. You people are great!

Standing by,
Big Mac

LCPL Derek Jones, you stand tall as a hero amongst heroes. It was my honor to pay homeage and honor to you, and hopefully help to provide peace and comfort to your family. It is this day that you were laid to rest with the honors that you so deserve. It is also this day that my son has signed up with the Corps. I will be proud of him no matter what he does, because like you, he is a good man. It is my hope that he will stand tall just as you have, showing compassion and concern for others. You have set an example for so many others to follow. May God Bless you and keep you, and hold his loving arms around your family, friends, and the community in which you lived.

Semper Fi my brother,
One day we will ride together,
My pegs are down for you.....

Respect,

Rick
