Quincy, IL - "Defend Those Who Defended Us"

19 Sep 2006 5:20 PM Alert

The Patriot Guard Riders will ride into Silvis, Il on Oct 7 06 to participate in a the re-dedication of  Hero Street (www.herostreetusa.org).

Hero Street is in Silvis, Il and on the Federal National Registry and attained this status some 35 years ago through a "Act of Congress".

We will be honoring the fallen, the veterans and currently active, reserve and future military.  This ceremony will mark 35 years of this well know park. It has been researched and documented by the Department of Defense that there is no other street of comparable size that has had as many men and women render service to the Armed Forces than the 1 1/2 block long street in Silvis. Of these 110 or more military men and women, six of them were killed in action during WWII and two were killed during the "Korean War".

We will be leading the Color Guard to represent our fore Fathers' fight for our freedoms.

Parade time is at 11:00 a.m. Staging and other details are being worked on at this time and will be posted soon.

Ride Captain is Gary "Illinois Cowboy" Schrock (mgspaint@insightbb.com), assisted by Ride Captain Max Howerter (howerter1@insightbb.com).

I wish I could be there - I grew up in Silvis, rode my bike on Hero Street all the time. Unfortunately we have other plans that weekend and won't be in town.

I'll notify anyone I know in the area still.

Okay people here we go. This dedication will take place at 11a.m. on Oct. 7th. The staging will be at Jewel-Osco on route five at 9a.m. with ride briefing at 10a.m. Police escort to Hero st. which is a short ride. we will proceed up Hero st. And park with the ceremony to last no more than two hr.s we will have a flag line there. For anyone wanting to do this and the ride for Tyler, we have the option to leave by noon.
All this is going to be fairly simple, but read up on Hero St. as it is an amazing story. Also will post pictures of the park as soon as I recieve them.
Directions are really easy for out of towners coming in, Mile marker 7 on interstate 80 is the Colona Il. exit get off there, turn right at stop sign go to next stop sign turn right again. Stay on State st. thru three stop lites.the 4th lite will be route 5, or John Deere rd., turn right or north go .7 miles Jewel-Osco is on left. We will be staging in the far east corner of the  lot , closest to the road. All this is only4 miles from Interstate 80. Any thing further please contact me by e-mail. would like a big showing. Remember Honor and Respect is why we are here.

Gary,

Check this Mapquest link to make sure it is the one you describe.

Gary and Max, it looks like my wife and I will be making this mission. Is there anything that we can help with or do you already have things under control.
